Blender is great for blender based stuff, but you'd have great difficulty exporting to a format that would work for hl IMO. Still worth learning to use though

milkshape is only free for 30 days, then it loses its ability to save anything. and as with most modelling progs, it's gonna take you more than 30 days to learn to use it.
one of its best features is the range of model formats that it can import/export, making it ideal for converting models from one game to another. i think it even beats the big guns on that one.
and now that it supports valves vtf texture format, i dont have any reason to learn another editor.
not free, but at less than ?15, it's not far away from free.

yeah g-max is good.
Maya PLE is decent as very few things are disabled so its really not crippleware. The only annoying things are that the perspective view when switched to shaded has an overlay saying MAYA PLe etc. Damn annoying, but otherwise its a great tool. I believe renders may be limited with the same overlay.

Well generally prices like that are paid by companies who are going to use the software to make a profit. People, most likely such as yourself, who are using the software for personal learning tend to just get pirated / trial versions. I doubt even the developers of said software expect to make many $7000 sales to individuals who aren't using the software as part of a business.

Not Alias. Everyone you talk to whose actually bought that program will not help you if your copy is not purchased ... because they spent $7k and you didn't.
But, Cobra, if you have $7,000 to burn, isn't there other things you could have spent it on. Because, honestly, there are better, cheaper, programs then Maya.

You can buy an extremely sweet computer with that much money. Personally, I would rather spend the money on hardware.
I use GMax instead, and it works great.

im sure he has other ideas in mind , or will with that much money spent
^_^. I believe that if its Truely important to you go get it. Why
else would sombody buy art ^_^ or other things if it was sheerly bought
for utilitarian uses. He must have been inspired/childhood memories or
something from maya = P. I look up to it because final fantasy the
spirits within was made with a good lot of it.
Edit: strange thing today , had to use chapstick for the first time in
my life shudders i just couldnt stand being away from my orange
juice! (this was random enough to be put as an edit instead of a new
post*

Where are you, parakeet? Somewhere usually not very cold I presume?
I am in LA, and I need to use chapsticks all the time because the weather is so extremely dry.
...but I digress.

Well, what kind of car do you drive? If you already drive a
Lamborghini (http://www.lamborghini.com/), then I would buy a second
one with a different color.

What the hell is wrong with you? While you're wasting money how about sending me a thousand dollars just to prove you can?
$7000 is half the cost of my car. $7000 is almost enough to pay for 4 years of room and board at my college. $7000 would let you buy like 500 CDs. And you spent it on a modeling program that you don't even know how to use...

For $7000 I would code you a model in Notepad (that includes all the hours it would take learning how). Though tbh I don't believe that you have actually bought it

Some people are born to rich parents. Do you think Bill Gates' son uses a hand-me-down computer?

Dude, $7000 is about Half the cost of a last-year's model, used Cobra (the car). Why the hell would you spend that money on software that you probably will NEVER learn to use. for the love of Mary, why would you do such a thing.
I think either

[*] you are a big liar who just downloaded a bootleg copy and told all your frineds that you are a big spender
Your parents are very rich in which case, the need to be severly beaten for buying Junior that "$7000 computer-thingy" he wanted.
