But the URL I get taken to is...

http://www.snarkpit.net/forums.php?forum=1&error=No+posts+found!#newposts

Here's a good one: I can't update some map screenshots. After
submitting the new pic , I kept seeing the old thumbnails. I clicked on
all of them and they all displayed the old pics. I reloaded the page
and tried again; nothing. I decided to delete all of the pics and
attempt to resubmit them all at the same time. This time, all 3
thumbnails were identical and when I clicked them they displayed the
old pics, in their initial order ,that I had deleted before
resubmitting them in a different order than the initial one. Now, after
attempting to resubmit those bloody pics, 24hours after the initial
brawl, I find 2 of my thumbnails identical, both leading to the old
"deleted" pic, and the 3rd one broken. Weird.

[edit]

Oh, and the pics aren't being displayed in the "edit map" page.

Reno, can you please click on that link just one more time- it won't work, but I'll have it "track" everything that might be going wrong, since I can't see what it's doing

Andrei, try now- I think it's just a CHMOD problem that you always get when moving websites. BUT also if the image you're trying to upload is over 800 pixels wide for some reason it won't resize them down, which might also be the problem- I have no idea why this is, but I'm working on it...

Well, it worked...kinda: the thumbnails are the right ones, but the pics themselves are STILL the old ones. http://www.snarkpit.net/maps.php?map=1909

[edit]

OOppps, working now  .

Lep, I just noticed that my average map rating seems to be zero... I know my maps are bad, but zero?

Edit: also my map's zip file hosted here at http://www.snarkpit.net/maps/HL/skull_cave.zip :is empty and it's size is only 22KB.

Edit2: My pit seems empty too. I know I should PM you, but I thought I might as put it in with the rest of the annoying stuff..
Thanks for enabling my pit again  My average map rating is still zero
though  and the zip file is still empty. (It's 22Bytes, not KBytes)

Should work now Reno

Fraggard, your maps have to be rated more than once for it to count, hence why your average is apparently 0. PS This isn't a new rule, it's always been in effect- any recent snarkmark changes are due to some other tweaking I've been doing (no I'm not vain enough to h4x it so that I have the most!!)

The batch file creation thing doesn't work for me - nothing happens
when I click "generate" even after filling in all the fields. This is
in Firefox by the way, it seems to work fine in IE.

if you change your map info you also need to re-upload your pictures, not that handy is it?

Are you sure? You never used to have to do that. If you leave the
"upload pictures" boxes empty when you update the map info, it should
just continue to use the ones you already had.

"Note that your comment is just plain text and can't be formatted."

That translation site gives you the characters in browser-ascii (don't know the real name, ISO996602339484-XBJ), since your browser holds it's own codes for fonts and values for things. And, the comment box simply doesn't accept html code, so the ascii characters are outputted and not their translations.

I thought of that, so i copy/pasted it into notepad. to remove any possible codes. it still came out borked.

is it possible that notepad now can understand code? it used to be so dumb, you could do almost anything with it to remove unwanted crap like code

Yes. I am too lazy to right click and open the pagq in a new window.

Er, no: SHIFT+click on a link if you want to open it in a new window, since there's no way to open a link in the same window if it is made to be opened in a new one...

And Orph, yes Notepad will display those characters, though you'll notice it gives you a message about using special characters if you try to save it. Not all browsers/systems can view those characters, though I should really get off my ass and make something convert 'safe' HTML like that into the right characters.

I'll want that to be linked in with the forums, and given the complexity here that would take a bit of coding and would probably break a few times- but I'll put it on the to-do list.

I have a special request. My tutorial about screens is not one anyone would think to look up. It is easy to find, but no one would dream of doing so. i am asking to have the link added to all the warning messages of this nature so it has a chance of being seen and used.

thanx for considering.

Does Steam preclude direct linking to a website?

It would be so nice to click on our server link and know who's in there at any given moment. It might encourage more Snarkpit members into fragging if you didn't have to bother with loading steam.

Just a thought.. A current status would be nice.

You could always get a third party server browser if you have some
particular hatred of loading up steam just to check whos in the server.
I used HLSW, and its a handy tool. Loads far quicker than Steam, and
you can set it up to do remote admining and things which is handy for
me

http://www.hlsw.net/

If anybody hears news about server plugins or whathaveyou that dish out info to a website, I'd be interested

I have no hatred at all. I was thinking more basic. I have currently 3 machines online. 2 are gaming, and this one (my old pIII 500) is my interactive comp. I use it for forums and such. the other two are currently turned off.

I was thinking that if it were possible to see who is online with a machine that does not have steam installed, it could help. Many people are here at school and might be curious to see who is fragging. Me personally, i spend far more time on this old machine because my kids have my gaming machine tied up. It would be handy to look in on the server, then afterward tell the kids i need the comp. I wouldn't need to uproot them just to find out the server is empty.

make sense now?

OK.. Let me see if I get the question.. You wanta third party program that you can either run on your machine or have on this web page where you can look at it and see who is on the server, and if you want to play with who is on.. if so then you kick the kids in the butt and get on and play. Yes there is.

One: http://www.serverspy.net/site/gamelauncher/

It will allow Lep. to put a server watch thing on this web site and you can see who is on the server and you can then click a join server button on that page to load up steam and join the server. I have used this and find it very useful.

Two: http://www.codeproject.com/csharp/GameServerInfo.asp

I have not used this program so I am not sure how good/bad it is.

Three: http://games.softpedia.com/get/Tools/Server-Watch.shtml#

Someone I know said this was a good program. I dont know personally, so it is one you need to check out for yourself.

Someone else posted about HLSW, it is a great tool.. but it is used on your end and not used on a web page like this.

If you want a Chatter that also will give you info on Servers Give X-Fire a try.

http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php

Now if your asking about Stats as LEP said, then I would recommend PhyscoStats. http://www.psychostats.com/

OH Here is a Link I just came across it has a bunch of links there with discriptions of what the programs/links are.. there maybe what your looking for there. http://www.planethalflife.com/commands/tools.shtml

I hope this helps.

Thanks, MoneyShot: http://www.snarkpit.net/?page=server (I'll update this page with more stuff later on).

The current server hosts say they support psychostats for HL1 and a few other games, but I don't think they do it with HL2 yet :/

Leperous, here's a suggestion:

I think it would be neat if there was a place where people could
request a tutorial. For example... If I'm looking for a tutorial
about creating realistic canyons and cliffs, but can't find what I'm
looking for, I submit a description of the tutorial I need.
Eventually, enough people will make requests for different tutorials
and a sizeable "Most Wanted" list would be compiled. Hopefully
experienced mappers would browse through these and see something they
know how to do well and then decide to make the tutorial and upload it
to the site. I think more people would be interested in creating
tutorials if they felt that people really wanted to know how to do the
things they are explaining. Also, this feature would potentially
be a good way to bolster the amount of tutorials we have on the site,
by providing more communication and interaction between those who want
to learn specific techniques, skills, etc. and those who already
possess the experience and the knowledge.

There would definitely have to be some sort of administrative
regulation/filtering, to make sure the tutorials being requested aren't
too large in scope, or too crazy, or too unclear.

I think it would be nice if the Snarkpit became the authority on
tutorials as that would potentially draw more mappers into the
community.

What do you think?

Yes, I've been thinking about that a lot recently too, I'll see how other websites (e.g. Powertabs.net) do things.

Just noticed that most model and prefab download links are borked and have probably been so ever since the site became .net.

This isn't so much as a suggestion as a question about the content.

I was just making a post in the editing forum and I wanted to color
code all the entities, options, and values to make my post look all
snazzy. I didn't know which color to pick for each, and ended up
just pulling up one of Lep's tuts and trying to go by what he
did. That got me wondering if there was a page somewhere with the
standard for what to colorcode different things when you're talking
about hammer and editing.

Does it exist? If so, can someone point me to it? I know
that this kind of a silly thing to want to do, because it's not like
most people color code their posts but I find it useful when reading
tutorials.

All the model/prefab downloads work, please point one out to me that doesn't?

And I've been thinking about also allowing you to use the tutorial bbcode in your forum posts, but the way it's set up isn't quite so simple to apply :/

Someone slow me down before I hurt myself, but I had another idea:

I'm not sure if this falls within the scope of this site (probably not)
but I thought it would be pretty cool there was a little box near the
bottom of the front page with a monthly (or whatever interval works
best) spotlight on a member of the Snarkpit. The spotlight would
consist of an interview written by a volunteer (or one of the head
honchos if they have time) and maybe one or two choice maps (or models
as the case may be) that the spotlighted member chooses.

Some sample questions:

Q: What's your favorite part of the mapping/modelling process? Conception? Building? Refinement? Release?

Q: Do you have any advice for the aspiring mappers/modellers out there?

Q: If you were offered a job in the industry would you take it? Who would you want to work for?

Q: What impact has mapping/modelling had on your real life and overall happiness?

Etc. Etc.

Hmm now that I think about it the interview would have to be pretty
good to make this interesting. But it would be kind of nice to
showcase some of the members I see around here. There's some
great work just collecting dust on the member profiles. The
member recommended map could be a great way for some newer members to
see some of the good work that's been done in the past.

I don't know if adding original content is something frivilous and
unnecessary considering that this site objectively seems just to be a
support structure for mappers, but at the same time I sense that there
is a strong sense of community.

Shrug It's just an idea I wanted to share. Thoughts?

I think its a great idea but I don't think, at this moment in time, we
have the community to support it. A monthly spotlight on members needs
a fairly large bank of members with sizeable and quality back
catalogues, and these days we aren't exactly drowning in those. Much of
the "old blood" has left the community and the "new blood" that has
taken its place - mostly those brought in due to soure editing - don't
have enough released work. Places like CGTalk and DeviantArt would
manage due to being generic enough in their scope that they attract
thousands of members, but I think its pretty hard for a relatively
small community to have enough content for such a feature.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

Well, I'll keep the idea tucked away in the back of my mind and maybe
sometime in the future it will become feasible and I'll bring it up
again.

It would be neat if we could find some people in the industry to talk
to. have some examples of ametures going pro? just a little
something to a.) get snark pit some non-newbie-mapping-question traffic
and b.) give us mappers hope for a better (payed) world.

There's always DesPlesda's interview with KungFuSquirrel, chock full of
insights into his creative process and getting a professional career...
or not.

http://www.snarkpit.net/features.php?page=articles&id=68

I guess it could be cool to put up some non-DesPlesda style serious
interviews with KungFuSquirrel and Finger since both have gone on to
work in the industry.

I can't believe I read the whole article. Although it was pretty funny in parts.

Refreshingly inane
