Anyways, I got the opportunity to see BareNaked Ladies live at Massey
Hall here in Toronto, and it was amazing. Six encores, and they
sounded better than on their recordings (rare these days) and they just
created such an energy, it was awesome.

And Jamiroquai is on a world tour to promote their new album, I'm gonna go see them live too.

Picked up a whole bunch of stuff in the past few weeks. Here's the list:

Audioslave - Out of Exile
Another superb general interest rock album. It's been out a month and I've already heard four tracks played on major radio stations, I think that speaks loads for the depth of the album.

Rush - Moving Pictures
Classic album featuring my favorite Rush song, "Tom Sawyer." Currently the oldest album in my collection.

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
It looks like this was released in Britain sooner than stateside, as I see a whole bunch of comments about it prior to the US release. Currently, I favor the acoustic disc, but the whole thing rocks.

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antartica
I've grown to really like the sound this band has, and everyone I've talked to recommended this over Good News for People Who Like Bad News so I bought it. Nice stuff, and some bonus tracks from a BBC recording session tossed on the end.

The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Took a chance on this one with very little knowledge beforehand. I really enjoy the intensely layered approach to building a song that this group seems to have, I've tried to count how many instruments they'll have going at certain points and it can't always be done. I think it's pretty cool too how the vocal duties are passed around the band, so it's not the same person singing every song. Definitely interested in hearing more from these guys.

I've only heard track 3 (which is really good), my friend says it's a good album, the arcade fire isn't my sorta taste though.

I liked one song from the Arcade Fire, Neighborhood #2 (Laika), but the rest didn't tickle my fancy, as it were.

Of Montreal - Satanic Panic In The Attic: Blegh, I'm becoming such a pop whore. At least it's good pop. Check out "Eros' Entropic Tundra," killer tune.

Tenacious D - Tenacious D: I already knew I liked these crazy cats but now I've actually got the album. "City Hall" is my favorite song on it just 'cause some of the singing/lyrics is hilarious beyond belief.

The Apples in Stereo - The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moone: Probably the happiest music I've ever heard, which in this case is a good thing.

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs: I've got Volume 1 which is awesome, most of Volume 2 which is OK-ish, so I don't hold out much hope for Volume 3. "I Don't Want To Get Over You" and "How f**king Romantic" are nice little ditties.

Wow I don't know many people who like the Magnetic Fields. They
definitely have some songs that I can't stand, but there are others
that I like. I like "All My Little Words" "Cuckoo" and "The Book
of Love" among a few others that I can't remember.

Anyone who likes rock music, not matter how heavy or light, should check out "Freak Kitchen". Amazing band, elements of all different genres, and the guitarist  Very unique, uses alot of interesting techniques and effects.

Mattias IA Eklundh ring a bell? Hes features on a varied load of other bands CD's, even death metal bands like Soilwork, but the music isn't death metal so don't worry about that. Just try downloading some first, or check out thier website. They have clips of every song on thier website.

Got the only other Beulah CD I didn't have, Handsome Western States,
and the onlly thing "wrong" with it is that they didn't have much money
so they just home-recorded it. Not really as catchy as their other
albums but yes, still very good.

Can't remember if it was someone here, or on the Fortress-Forever
forums, but someone mentioned Freak Kitchen. I listened to some
of their stuff and I like it. I'd buy a CD if I wasn't already
swamped down with 20 others that I need more to enhance my classics
collection.

Got ->

Architecture In Helsinki - Fingers Crossed: Generally a crazy poppish
sort of thing, some songs are better than others, none too bad though.

Architecture In Helsinki - In Case We Die: Even better, I've only
listened to the first 5 songs as of yet but they're all good if a bit
samish.

Mary Lou Lord - Got No Shadow: Don't really know how to describe this
other than she's a really great singer and can strum on the 'ol
acoustic too.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - The Tyranny Of Distance: Saw him on
Conan a while back and thought it was good, but everytime I downloaded
one of his songs, I didn't like it. So I switched to another album and
found this and <3'd it.

Who HASN'T heard Franz Ferdinand by now, really? I don't mind them, but some of these bands get severely overplayed.

I picked up "Crimson" by Alkaline Trio, but haven't had much
opportunity to listen to it yet. First few tracks seemed good but the
album seems to die off toward the end, which is a bit of a shame. Their
albums tend to get better with repeat listenings though, so I'll wait
and see. Also grabbed the Hundred Reasons album "Shatterproof is not a
Challenge" since it was on sale. Again, it was good to start with but
sort of gets a bit samey as it goes on. Can't complain for ?4 though

I got Dynamite, the new Jamiroquai album, and it is so so cool.
It sounds different then their older stuff, and it's hard to kind of
explain how. It uses more techno kind of beats I think is the
best way to say it. Bleah, just listen to it, it pwns.

I've listened to Crimson maybe... 10-15 times now, and I have to say
your initial reaction was right on the money. The CD seemed to
die after track 6.

Another thing, them being on Vagrant records and having the same
producer as Green Day has really changed the way they feel. Sure
they still have a morbid fixation, but they just dont sound like they
did on any other albums. The electronic voice warbling on
track...3? just screams over-producing.

I mean... I really preferred it when they sang about getting hammered
to forget about their latest girl problems. There was something
endearing about their drunkeness.

The album is a bunch of crap! I love Daft Punk, but really, the new album seems to be a few samples all distorted with thier guitar organic sound. You could happily take each song, cut it down, and combine it into 1 10 minute song and it would sound right, thats how boring the album is.

And French Toast it was me who said about Freak Kitchen  If you like Joe Satriani, try out "Freak Guitar" (its like a guitar for singing thing done by Freak Kitchen).

I gave The Decemberists another go, now I <3 them! Weird! All 3 of
their albums are awesome though I don't like some of the songs. Vocals
remind me a lot of Placebo.

Got all the albums by Clinic, too... they sound a lot like Radiohead, in a good way.

ANYWAY.

Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman: Got it for the tribute song to Elliott

Is this album actually any good? Beautifulgarbage was pretty much a terrible album showing what happens when a band has no clue what they're doing anymore and so I'm a little hesitant about Bleed Like Me, especially due to the complete lack of airplay it received.

It is actually pretty good (in my opinion). I didn't like much more
than a few songs on Beautiful Garbage, either... try "Bad Boyfriend" or
perhaps "Sex Is Not The Enemy," those are at least decent tracks.

TeeBee - Live at Synergetic bootleg. Anyone else listen to that? I'm starting to like Drum and Bass a lot more after hearing it.

Yay 311! Me and my only 311 lovin' mate went to see them play their
first scottish gig in Glasgow a couple of years ago, and I reckon
everybody else in the small crowd was there for the support bands
Regardless, we had a great time

Rival, grab yourself "Don't Stay Home", "8.16am", and "Omaha Stylee";
three very good but quite different 311 tunes. One of my favourite
things about the band is that they mix so many different styles -
reggae, rock, funk, rap, and sometimes even a little more. Oh and if
you do get "Omaha Stylee", give it a chance, because it has a somewhat
long intro part that is NOT indicative of the actual song!

If you want to look into some japanese bands, I have a few I can suggest...

If you like ska, big band style music with lots of brass, or just
anything upbeat really, try out Scafull King, who have a knack to make
EVERYBODY smile. Some good tunes to try by them are "Good and Bad",
"You and I Walk and Smile", "Needless Matters" and "We are the World".
Quite frankly though, everything I've heard by that band is freaking
awesome. If only I could buy their CD's from, well, ANYWHERE.

A somewhat more orthodox ska outfit from Japan are Kemuri. Once again
they are a hugely positive band from what I've heard - music designed
to make you happy. "Heart Beat", "PMA", and "Givin' Up" are all pretty
rockin tunes, but if you hate the likes of Reel Big Fish or Less Than
Jake, you won't find much to like here I don't imagine.

Home Made Kazoku are a sort of rap/rock Japanese band I heard doing an
anime ending song, and it really set me up for the summer. This is
sunny music  "Arigatou" was the song I heard and is probably my
favourite by them, "Summer Time Magic" is like a Japanese version of
Will Smith, while "Mr. Tough Guy" is a little darker fast paced
rap/rock.

Another anime related find is "Orange Range", who I believe are pretty
popular in Japan. "Asterisk", the intro song for an anime called
"Bleach", is another rap/rock style tune that in my opinion develops in
quite interesting ways. Another song "Viva Rock" that I think is
by them was one of the Naruto intros or endings, and while it is cheesy
as hell, if you are looking for something a bit different (and if you
are looking to Japan for music, it seems you are!) give it a whirl

Hope some of that was useful to you!

Don't forget "Flowing" by 311. And I guess you may want to check
out "Come Original" which is there most popular song. "Amber" is
pretty good too... although very mellow.

The only Japanese band I could recommend is The Pillows... they've got
some real crapfests of songs, but "Ride on Shooting Star" is good... if
I'm thinking of the right song.

Got -> Ben Folds Five - Whatever And Ever Amen... good CD! Brick's
like a radio classic, probably the only reason I'd heard of Ben Fold,
hadn't heard it for years... good times.

I do beleive you are right there Rival. Radiohead have redifed the way
tou play rock music and quite frankly are as origional as they come.

I've been listening to the Chemical Brothers and quite frankly its like
nothing on Earth, i always thought that the Chemical Brothers were just
Dance crazed computer nerds who tried to be cool by shoving vast
quantities of drugs up their noses. When you actually listen to them
you find that there is no other music quite like it. Anyone can pick up
a guitar and rock the house down but no-one can make music like the
chemical brothers.

I don't think you get much better than U2, Iron Maiden, The Offspring or Jimi Hendrix.

I think you can get much better than U2. Everything about that
band makes me angry. Then I listen to AC/DC, Led Zeppelin,
Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Freak Kitchen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, the
Used, Coheed in Cambria, and Marilyn Manson until I forget about them.
