Cool, a Phobia thread!

I have overcome certain fears. I used to be afraid of the dark,
but I have naturally gotten over that fear as I'm sure many others
have.

I also was afraid of confined spaces. I once went with my family
walking through these caves, and at some parts they were very narrow,
and I would freeze. But I've gotten over that as well.

I've noticed something strange: although I am arachnaphobic, certain
types of tarantula (the huge furry ones) don't trigger my arachnaphobia
yet a common garden spider (about 1/10 of the size and not even a
quarter as dangerous) does.

Maybe bacause the tarantula is not a local danger, whilst the common spider is really close - a phobia doesn't consider the dangerousity of a thing. But the intense of the fear of it.

Well when it comes to creepy crawly things that are highly venemous and
lethal, Australia really takes the cake. We seem to have the highest
proportion of most lethal creatures on the planet, which isn't very fun.

I don't really fear hights, but when I'm close to an edge/ridge, I
cannot help but thinking how h?rd I would smash the ground and what I
would think during the fall. Not because I'm planning on killing
myself, but just because death is so near ...

Of course, you don't jump over a fence to smash yourself on the pavement 7 doors down, but you - physically - could. That's a small twist in my brain I'm a bit curious about.

Personally, I'm not exactly the phobia kind of person, although I
REALLY don't like maggots, you know, it's just how
they...squirm..and...yeah. Also, I have a somewhat intense fear of
sharp objects near my eye. You know if you walk down a hallway with
some pieces of paper taped on the wall and they're only taped by the
top, and they flip up from the wall as you pass by...papercut in the
eye...uuuuuughhh.

Those of you who dislike cockroaches don't read any further.

I (may be) working with a few people to make some software tools for a
studio. The stuff I work on is inside a classroom-plus-recording-studio
with cameras, mics, and so on (for taping and broadcasting lectures).
The entire room has soundproof padding on the panels. The material is
made of some kind of fibre that's lightweight and is a matted set of
those fibres.

Also, It's the rainy season over here, and roach populations generally increase.

Guess what, we just discovered that the roaches have taken a liking
to the material on the panels. The place is CRAWLING with roaches.
They are all over the walls, in the ceiling, above the doors, under the
chairs, everywhere. This started suddenly over the past few days (guess
I'm just lucky), and the rains have just started. They increase for
the next month or so before the monsoon ends, and the roach population
grows for a bit longer.

As a small example, they get startled when you switch on the lights.
The studio has some pretty harsh lights, and they panic when you switch
them on. Those that can fly do so and flap around wildly trying to head
towards all the lights at once. Your head just happens to be in the
way. The crawling roaches jump underfoot and run around confused. They
try running in and out of walls and panels and generally stir up hell.

And I'm normally quite wary of cockroaches. I used to be s**t scared
when I was younger, but luckily I got over that. I can only imagine how
badly some people will freak out.

They're getting the walls treated with some anti-cockroach stuff now
(So far it was just anti-termite and anti-wood-borer coating).
Hopefully, I can do some real work once the roaches are sent away.
Anyone want to trade places with me in the meantime?

Oh man, that sucks. The worst I have in my house is a couple mice
in the basement, but they should be dead by now, I heard the traps go
off last night :smile:

in this house im staying in here in monroe theres rats in the walls. they crawl about at night and it has a creepy similarity to a person trying to crawl their way out...

After I read Stephen Kings "It" I totally dislked them. After I saw the movie, I was surprised what a little make up can do. Pennywise was portrayed as a really evil clown; but in some way the creepy mood just got killed by... don't really know; bad screenplay maybe?
I wouldn't like to meet a clown like Pennywise; but some different ones should be no problem (I hope?).

EDIT:

In addition to clowns. I just thought of "The lost highway". The man with the anaemic face; how he looks and acts - just his presence makes me shiver. He's like some kind of ghost

I have a pet lizard so i have to feed him crickets and occasionally a
few may escape. If they do ill happily bend down and grasp them in my
hand but if it jumps ill jump then get chills down my spine plus
goosebumps but then ill try again to pick up the cricket which i think
is rather strange.

I also have a strange fear of falling, its not the thought of falling
and hitting the ground its the strange feeling you get in your gut as
your falling.

Im also like DrGlass, i get my self really worked up about stuff coz i
keep thinking about it, like when i watched Grudge it was past midnight
and i was the only one awake. When i left to got upstairs i had
to turn of lights behind me leaving the stairs dark and not seeing
anything behind me and i think i running by the time i got to the top
of the stairs.

Wow, didnt think i was scared of so many things and theres things i did
mention like i wont go caving because i have a fear of getting stuck
and not getting out.

Spiders and bees/wasps. Hate the bloody things. >.< May have something to do with watching Aliens at a young age.

I've got a pet snake, and I feed it mice. It's so cool!
Unfortunately, I can't feed it live mice, because if the snake isn't
hungry, the mouse will eat parts of the snake while it sits
there. So I feed my snake dead frozen mice, but it's still neat
to watch it open it's mouth so wide. :smile:

But you do unfreeze the mice or does your snake eat frozen stuff?

I have a pet as well. A Lychee.... My other pets yust died... I'm no good with animals.

I fear pain. Like if i know
im gonna be in pain im terrifyed about when i acctually feel the pain its
not as bad as i anticipated it to be.

I had this fear as well. My Master says: "Pain is your friend". And as the years went by, this fear of pain ... wel it didn't disappear; but it grew small.

I guess it takes just time. I realised that pain is one way of how the body speaks to you. It really helps to listen what he wants to tell.

LOL our flat at uni was way freaked after watching the grudge! The bit with the grudge coming up the covers of the bed :-Z

When we shot our 2nd movie "Body Park" I played the dead body of the guy I played in the prequel who died before. And for that they covered my face and my chest with these little bastards. Boy, that wasn't creepy at all. It tickled like hell. And I had really to concentrate. A laughing dead body is kinda unnatural. I need to do a screen shot of the DVD, because I don't have a picture jet; If anyone is interested

1) Heights. I never like to stand on top of something that reaches more
than 10 CM above ground! (yes, 10 cm freaks me out!). It has a thing to
do with...

2 - Afraid of stairs. I was pushed down from a very small staircase
(about 40 Cm or so...) so that I had a just a crack(!) in a bone in my
finger. It was nothing to worry about. But I still haven't really
gotten over staircases I cannot grip onto something... (except for the
ones I know i CAN'T get hurt with or thrown down from :biggrin: Like the ones
in my house :wink: ) It's just... if someone pushes you from the staircase,
you fall and get hurt... which brings us to the next point...

3 - afraid of getting hurt. If I know something will hurt me plenty,
then it depends on how much agony and pain it creates, whether I
actually dare to do that or not :biggrin:

The three things I fear the most!

I'm not afraid of dying. I'm not afraid of bugs. I just HATE them. Not
scared. Hating. (the bugs and insects (wasps, spiders)... not dying
:biggrin: ). They are discusting.

Actually, I only get night terrors when I'm REALLY depressed.

Pain is something that doesn't scare me at all. I mean I dont
like pain, and I wont seek pain, but if I need to do something that
will hurt (this includes doing stressfull stuff, like 15 mile hikes
with a 40lb pack on) I will do it, becuase pain is only in the moment.

Think about it you ram your head into a wall, sure it hurts, but once
the pain is gone its like it was never there. I also belive you
can overcome pain though meditaion type stuff. I've been able to
"will" away head achs and minor pain, the same way I can give myself
head achs by just thinking about it.

Though something that does freak me out is being bound and torchered. Not being able to move is just crazy to think about.

Yeah I'm not afraid of pain either... but then again I've never truly
experienced anything excruciating like child birth or a slipped
disk. I've never even broken a bone for that matter.

I guess I'm kind of weird, but I remember not being bothered about the
dull ache I used to get after having my braces tightened. I used
to almost enjoy the sensation ... partly because I knew it was
straightening my teeth I guess.

I get shots every week to keep my allergies down, and they barely hurt
at all... but I kind of look forward to feeling the pain. In this
age of medication and treatements and knowledge we very rarely live
through pain, which is something that almost everyone had to do in the
past. It makes me feel alive (when it happens occasionally)...
and I'm happy to have a tiny bit of it as opposed to none.

I used to be afraid of wasps, heights, and messing with ANYTHING that could possible harm you. My mom really did a number on me when i was a kid. She taught me to be afraid of EVERYTHING.

every stranger was gonna molest me.
every electric cord was gonna zap me.
every dog was gonna bite me.
every flame was gonna burn me.
I would fall from every height.
I would drown if i went into too deep of water.
I would ALWAYS land on my neck if i dove into a pool.

that sort of s**te. But now I don't fear any of this stuff. I still steer clear of angry wasps though. Not being afraid is not the same as stupidity.

Another good way to get over pain is to get hurt ALOT. I used to be pretty afraid of pain. But if you don't get hurt very often, it's really a fear of the unknown, once you've hurt yourself in just about every imaginable way, the fear really starts to go away. What doesn't kill you might not make you stronger but it definetely makes you a bit less afraid of what hurt you.

The exception to this is traumatic experiences that create phobias... but those might just be good for me. My bod's way of saying "DON'T YOU REMEMBER LAST TIME YOU STUPID f**k!".

So I guess the real line should be: What doesn't even come close to killing you but still hurts a bit will make you less afraid, what almost kills you will teach you to stay away. I think it has a nice ring to it.

You too. That's amasing. The pain of braces felt like artificial. Really strange, unusual.

Haha I hated the pain of eating after getting my braces tightened,
because that was a sharp shooting pain that got in the way of me
enjoying a meal. But I really didn't mind the slow throbbing in
the gums when I was just sitting around after I'd had the braces
tightened. Weeeiiiird.

Lol.. I'm not THAT afraid of pain. Just I am afraid of huge pain. I
don't know, though, how much a wasp attack would hurt, but once in
childhood it shot me right into my foot :S It was VERY excruciating
pain... I can't remember it well (heck... I was only 2 or 3), but the
thing is.. it was like a yell over the whole village when I got it.

I have almost broken a finger and that hurt aswell. A lot.

You know, they say even 10% of the pain woman feels when having a birth
is more than any man would ever have carry. Perhaps if you could let a
horse shack its ... in your ass, then you'd get it... (can't tell,
never tried and believe me - i don't even want to).

well as for me im scared of lightening ever since i can remember. i think its the fact that i know the power of them and was almost struck by it at one point... never again will i go walking about in a thunder storm...

Same here. I remember walking home from looking for my sister's
pet iguana, and a thunder storm came up. I was fine until
ligthning stuck the ground like 20 feet away from me. I lost it
and ran down the road as fast as I could, sceaming my head off.
Sence then, I guess I'm a little more afraid of thunder storms now.

As for the badly designed poll thing, a poll can't hold too many
options and I thought those were the most common phobias. The joke's on
me I guess. :smile:

Your first intimacy experiences were bad? Understandable, if that's the case, though.

I can't tell just by looking at you :biggrin: But if I had to guess, I'd tell
you have been sexually abused once in your life. That's really not my
problem, I know, instead it would be serious, even too serious subject

Depends how small. I don't like being locked in lockers, but don't mind lifts or cupboards etc unless I know they are blocked- but I'm sure most people are the same.

Being trapped in a tight submerged box without any air... my worst nightmare, TBH.

That's not a clinical fear though. That's a very sound understanding of how asphyxiation works. The key to something being classified as a "fear" is a high degree of irrationality in the reasoning.

Being burned alive has to be the worst way to die.
