Audition was a great film. Such a strange change through the movie - it
begins like a drama/romance, and turns into a really rather sick and
twisted torture/horror film. Then again, it is a Takashi Miike film,
and that guy isn't exactly orthodox. Check out Ichi the Killer and the
Dead or Alive films for plenty evidence of that.

Was Dead or Alive the one with the guy who kills all those zombies with the law mower?

Dead or Alive? Yes it was. And about spoilers to 'Suicide Club'. Someone said a bunch a girls getting killed was a spoiler. THE NAME OF THE MOVIE IS SUICIDE CLUB. Also....that movie was pretty good....but with a pretty f**king lame end.

Oh another Takashi Miike film that is by far the wierdest of the bunch
(yet one of the most enjoyable and memorable) is "Happiness of the
Katakuris". Its a mad mix of comedy, drama, horror, and....musical.
This movie has to be seen to be believed really.

And to top it all off its only ?7.99 on play.com at the moment, so I think I'll pick up a copy for myself

<DIV class=quotetext>...Happiness of the Katakuris...</DIV></DIV>

That reminds me of another utterly kickass movie. I would rank it VERY high....like....top 5 or top 10 high.

HAPPINESS.

Depressing and completely twisted...yet it is funny.....you have to have a mighty love of dark, dark comedies to enjoy this though.

edit: Dunno if I made this clear...but the name of the movie is entitled 'Happiness'.

My guess is kid appeal. Maybe he was going for a new C3P0 but
failed in that respect. C3P0 was kind of annoying, but not
claw-my-eyes-and-poke-out-my-ears-annoying like jar jar.

Appended: Since I was the last to post in this thread I'd just
like to add that I just watched the Life Aquatic with Steve
Zissou. I thought it was pretty good. I applaud its
originality, but it was a little too weird for me throughout most of
the movie. I only started getting into the movie towards the end,
which is a shame, because I was enthralled throughout Rushmore and The
Royal Tenenbaums. There was more emotion in those two movies.

If you like Wes Anderson you'll obviously end up seeing it, but if you
haven't seen any of his films, I would start with something like
Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums instead.

Sin City has to be the best comic book movie ever made. Every single
person in that movie kicks complete ass, and the soundtrack is f**king

I thought it was well made and has some good acting in it, but I don't
really know why it was on AFI's top 100 list. I have a feeling
there was something I missed...

Maybe it just wasn't your type of movie. It was a great dark comedy with fantasic acting and a great script.

Watched "Hide and Seek" yesterday, was kinda slow at times and not that scary, but still a good movie.

Also watched "House of 9". It reminded me of "The Cube" and was an ok movie.

I just watched "Crash" today. There were some really really
amazing scenes (the two with the Ruiz character and his daughter come
to mind) that just made this movie for me. I would recommend
going to see it. I definitely liked it, and wouldn't mind seeing
it again.

Appended: I just watched "Primal
Fear" last night. I'd wanted to see it for a long time because I
like Edward Norton, and I have to say it was a great movie. I
really enjoyed watching Edward Norton act.

Appended 2: I watched John
Carpenter's "The Thing" tonight, and I have to say I really enjoyed
it. The special effects were pretty amazing. More amazing
because it wasn't digital/computer effects. I don't really know
how they did it.... maybe animatronics + some stop motion
animation? I guess I liked it because I liked the idea. And
it was interesting to see a younger Keith David.

Alright--- I feel like I'm the only one watching movies nowadays. Here's my fourth movie in a row:

I watched "LA Confidential" tonight, and I thought it was really
good. It's now one of my favorite movies, and I'm realizing I
like the film noir genre a whole lot, even when it's in color.
Because the movie indulges you in a Hollywood ending, I think it's a
good idea to watch it along with Chinatown. No more ideological
reassurance for you!

A distinct lack of Papa Lazaru though; stole the scene everytime. Hilary Briss was a lot more intimidating then I remember him being, as well. Very cool guy.

Watched the Seven Samurai
the other day. Kind of jerky and slow at times for my miniscule

Just watched Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It was pretty good,
surprisingly. It's got a lot of those kind of stereotypical

of explosions etc. etc.

The only film by Akira Kurosawa I've seen is Rashomon, and it was
okay. Free Fact: It was the first time in a film that a camera
was pointed directly at the sun.

I hear Yojimbo is pretty good.

Just watched "Without a Paddle" it was a alright comedy nothing special but the part I did like whas when they were all just in there boxers huddleing together and one of them on the end was turning the one in the middle on.

Its worth a watch and has its moments like other comedys.

This was a good movie imo, the start seemed quite slow but built up the
background knowledge you would have needed to understand the rest of
the movie, and the counselling sessions were a good idea to specify
their feelings about one another and their positions as a couple.

Well I just watched Hitch. It was fairly good, it had its
moments. The whole thiung would have fallen apart if Will Smith
and the fat guy weren't such good actors. I felt a lot of the
lines were fairly cheesy metaphors, but when it was funny, oh man it
was funny.

Worth it to rent, but I'm glad I didn't pay $10 to see it in theatres.

I just saw it. It was brilliant. It was so much better than
the originals, I urge all of you to see it. Oh god! It was
amazing. It was so not what you'd expect to get out of

Batman Begins was wonderful. FINALLY.

If you're familiar with the comics, it can best be compared to Frank Millars Batman. Which is what we all think of when we think batman, by the way. Dark, Burdened, and badass (remember when the working title was "Batman: Year One"?). This is what Batman Begins entails. Of course there are some slightly cheesy quips, but not many.

The one and only pure gripe I have is with his cowl. However, hopefully they will develop his costume more as the years go on showing his improovement as the Dark Knight.

Oh and if you're worried, none of the other movies come into play, at all. It's a complete start over. Also, if you read about the sequels they're planning and have complaints, you do not have a leg to stand on. Mark Hamill is being persued to play the Joker (in talks), which, if you know the material at all, is PERFECT. Don't think "Luke Skywalker", Hamill does the voice, manurisms and has the overall character of the joker dead on. Not to mention, he looks like him. I believe they even slightly designed the animated joker in Batman the animated series after Hamill (I could be wrong, but there's a striking resemblence), and as you now know, he did the voice.

I believe they want to do a movie just with The Joker then a third one with the joker and two face. Super badass.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I just got done watching one of my favorite movies about 15 minutes ago. Coincedently, its main star is also Christian Bale (Batman in Batman Begins.)

American Psycho. Great flick. However, I had the discomfort of having to watch the terribly cut 'R' rated version. Unrated directors' cuts are the only way to go, folks. American Psycho is great bloody fun even the second time around.

Speaking of un-unrated movies, Blockbuster doesn't even carry unrated/NC-17 movies. Lame. They also don't carry fullscreen versions of anything. Oh well, they are still the cheapest place to rent movies. $14.99 USD a month for unlimited online rentals by mail. Free shipping both ways. You can have up to 3 out at a time. No late fees. Plus two in-store free rentals a month, too.

Rent. Copy. Return. It's is the Dark Tree policy.

up next in my queue: The Life Aquatic, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Happiness, Dave Chapelle Season 1 discs 1 & 2

The blockbusters around here carry unrated stuff ... and why in God's name would you want full screen? If you want the sides cut off so bad zoom in with your DVD player.

Wilson, it really isn't though. It's also functional which would make more sense then looks. (It also would make more sense since government vehicles are usually ugly as all hell, but durable and full of use. You're not going to 'wow' your enemy to death.) I think they were going for a more realistic aspect, which is surley achieved, especially in comparison to the other movies (this goes into the design of the cave, Gotham, and his suit as well).

Apparently they actually made 8 of those things (fully functional) costing about $1 million a piece.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Speaking of Christian Bale, I really liked "Empire of the Sun" when I
first saw it on TV as a child. It stars Christian Bale when he
was a youngin'. John Malkovich is also in the movie. I
recently remembered it, and bought the DVD. Still
enjoyable. If you like Christian Bale check it out.

In the same vein, I like watching "Stand By Me" just to laugh at how
fat and awkward Jerry O'Connell was. It's mean I know, but what a
guilty pleasure.

Yeah that was funny.

Just watched Assault on Precinct 13. If you're not bothered by a
lot of swearing, then this movie kick ass. It's got so many guns
you wouldn't believe it. Laser aimers, swat guys, flashbangs,
it's jsut so kick ass.

And if that weren't enough, the script doesn't suck either. There
were a few plot twists that really came outa nowhere. Plus each
character had their own little quirk. It really was a great movie.

Once more, as long as you don't mind swearing. A lot of swearing.

I saw Batman Begins last night, and it wasn't as good as I had
hoped. I'm not a huge comic/batman fan, but I still thought it
was the best out of all the batman movies. However, as far as
movies go I wasn't that impressed. The fighting scenes
particularly were very very jumpy and hard to follow. It was kind
of funny to see Christian Bale in the mask growly as deep as he could
and making his mouth look as badass as possible. He did get huge
though... after watching him in the machinist, you have to be pretty
amazed.

The movie itself was solid in most parts, but there just weren't any
moments when I audibly went "wow!" or "that's awesome!" which are
usually tell-tale signs that I really like a movie. I did find
some parts funny, which is good, and I still really like Christian
Bale, but on the whole the movie didn't impress me as much as I'd hoped.

Just got back from Batman Begins, and while I echo ATM's concern about
the fight scenes being unenjoyably camera jumpy (as well as really dark
  • together making it nigh on impossible to make out what is happening),
all in all I really enjoyed it. Christian Bale made a good Bruce
Wayne/Batman, and the overall storyline was interesting and held
together nicely. It was also great to have the history and explanation
behind things put into context; for example explaining who was making
all the advanced technology. Well worth watching

I read all the batman comics up to 1980.. Is this movie gonna be from that era or afterward?

The reason I ask, I never heard of your "Batman: Year one"

I saw Batman Begins the day it came out here in oz, and I'd have to say
its the BEST Batman movie ever. I have hated the batman movies ever
since the one with Michelle Peifer, they have been way too kiddy,
apparently based on the comic books. Well this one is more in the style
of the first movie with Michael Keaton, which was so kickass because it
wasn't make for kids. This one is based on the original graphic novel,
made for adults, and is perhaps the first Batman movie that actually
makes his character seem somewhat credible and realistic. Definately a
5 star affair.
The reason I ask, I never heard of your "Batman: Year one"
It is the original graphic novel that the comic book series was based
on. The comics were a more watered down, kiddied up, pop version of the
original.

Year One, I think is not that recent. That is a re-release of it. Not exactly sure when it came out, since I don't have it.

I also strongly suggest "Dark Knight Returns". Between those and Alan Moores work on Batman, you really don't need to read anything else (besides Fall of the Dark Knight, if you really want to; Robin II's death. The main stuff)

Smith, do you even remember the first and second movies? The second is WAY darker. The first one is so cheesy. The only reason why I like the first one is because all the characters are assholes.

"I wonder where he got this thing fro--"
"China"
"How do you know?!"
"Because that's where I bought it"

The second movie is pretty good from what I remember.

One thing I truely forgot was that the "classic" Batman theme which has been attached to the dark knight for over a decade was written for the first movie. I kind of missed it in "Begins". But, still good.

There are new (As in came out this month) renditions of Year One to reflect the movie more. (Year One: Scarecrow, etc.)

[EDIT]
Batman Year One was released in 1988.

The penguins with rocket packs kinda ruined the second one for me. The
first two batman movies were pretty good, but I think its safe to say
from that point on they were disappointing. Sure the batman theme is
missing, but I didn't really miss it. The way they've done Begins
really allows for a fresh start to batman, and has me wondering whether
or not they'll do another in the same vein.

When you talked about the first batman Crono, were talking about the
one with Michael Keaton or the very first one with Adam West. The very
first original batman movie, based on the television series, is an
absolute ball, particularly the use of comic style sound words in the
final penguine submarine fight. Pure gold.

You really cannot compare the Adam West versions to any other. For one, there is to much time between them and technology renders a comparison difficult. Secondly, Adam's is from another era entirely.. It was like Kirks Enterprise.. They had "Go-Go" boots for Christ sakes.

'89. Both Keaton and Nicholson play complete dicks. It's great.

And Chris Nolan is doing the next two. As far as I'm aware, the plan is to do The Joker then Two Face. In my opinion, it can only get darker. Especially with two face (and a proper introduction for Robin, since Two Face is responsible for his parent's death. Done properly, it'd be fantastic)

Oh and don't get me wrong, I can't stand 3 and 4. I saw both in theaters and I suffeciently blocked them out of my memory. From 4 I remember the curtains and drapes in the theaters and where we sat better than I remember the movie. I remember being very pissed about Bane.

f**k you Joel Schumacher.

Not to mention, I don't understand how he made 3 and 4. All his other movies are rather dark.

Wasn't trying to Orph, just clarifying what was considered the 1st
batman movie in the modern sense. The original with Adam West is a
classic and should be cordoned off from whatever came after.

Aparently Mark Hammel is set to play The Joker cos he did the voice in the cartoon I think.

Batman and Robin is somewhat redeemed by two key things:

"The End is the Beginning is the End"
Uma Thurman's hotness
