I used to play CS15 on a server running WC3 mod, and it was great! I
loved it when throwing a single grenade resulted in the anihilation of
more than half the players on the map when using critical grenade
strike level 3, especially on fy_iceworld  .

Definitely, it was a nice way to spice up CS every once in a while, although I do prefer vanilla CS.

I tired the Quake 4 demo and got lag even on low settings. That ting sucks up huge amount of resources.

I also have Civ 4 but havn't played it. Plan to try it out today.

I tried to play some Q4 on LAN at a local ICafe, and all the maps had
bright green lighting that was slowly burning my retina. Is this some
sort of weird copy-protection (all 3 of the guys that were playing with
me had the same issue)?

I just played (not done yet) Quake 2.

This is the first time I've ever played the full version. I wonder: did our own andrew weldon have anything to do with this game?

Well I looked for his name on the Quake 4 credits. I saw him there, but not on the Quake2. I got the Quake 4 DVD edition and it comes with Quake 2 and all its expansions.

I finished HL2 yesterday. It was like playing through the game for the first time. It was amzing to say the least. It felt like a theatrical movie instead of a video game. After getting the "full experience" I was much happier with it. Before I wouldnd've given the game a B-, I'd have to give it an A+ now.

I'm also about half way through Far Cry right now. It's my first time playing it. It's a lot of fun but HL2 still beats it out. I really like how the levels guide you to your destination. Even though there are huge islands you always somehow find your way to where you trying to get to.

I've been addicted to CSS the pas tfew days now. I plan to start a map for it spring break.

Overall I'm happy with the video card. I don't really like Dells but this computer really isn't all that bad. I would still prefer to have built my own but oh well. I'm fine for now.

I can't turn any of this stuff up ... at all. That will soon change. Mwhahaha. Ah, I'm tired.

Anyway, I picked up Silent Hill 4 the other day, I finally found a copy at the local shops. It was $15, I thought the price was pretty steep until I realized it was a brand new copy. So, eh.

Been playing alot of the original Dooms lately, but with the GZDoom
source port (that enables mouselook, has an OpenGL engine, dynamic
lighting, EAX I believe and all kinds of other goodies. The PWADs I've
been using the most are BIGDROP -- my Doom version of the BigDrop2 HL1
map that has some pretty random weapon sounds thrown in, and
newsnds.wad, which as you can guess replaces all the sounds (and a few
of the sprites) with more badass ones.

I'm waiting on getting my Xbox 360 before getting the new Ghost Recon (which looks sooooo awesome), so I picked up Ghost Recon 2 for the Xbox to get me settled into the series. There is a lot about the game that is frustrating - most of the problems related to the lack of control / iditiotic AI of the squad members - but overall I really like it. I'm playing through on hard and finding it a real challenge, but a manageable challenge which is exactly what I like to have from a hard mode  The third person viewpoint is handled really nicely with great character animation, and I think it is one of the key factors that make the game feel special. If this was an FPS it would be completely average/unremarkable, but it is made so much more atmospheric by seeing your guy leaning around corners, giving squad orders with hand movements, and rolling over while lying prone.

I just got my XBox360 last weekend, the core system. I also bought the hard drive and the HD cable. I picked up Perfect Dark and I am alittle dissappointed in my first game, but thats just me. I need the wireless controllerts, wireless adapter and a better game. Perhaps I'll look into the new Ghost Recon next payday.

I got the Premium package on my 360. So far I've got

Project Gotham Racing 3: Good game, annoying sometimes, butthe bestest
racer out there. THe first person view is done beautifully.

NHL 2K6: Fun, but easy.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare: Best f**king game ever.

Halo 2: Less fun then it's cracked up to be.

Unreal Tournament: Apparently the 360 isn't as backwards compatible as it was said to be...

(waiting on) Oblivion: ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh baby.

Of the 360 games I own (Kameo, PDZ, PGR3, Q4, Kong, Condemned, DOA4, Call of Duty 2, Ghost Recon, Oblivion, Burnout Revenge and Blazing Angels very soon), PDZ is by far the worst. Clunky, frustrating, annoying, ugly, etc. etc. Though I am getting Gun from the company store because it's cheap, maybe that'll win... The entire rest of that collection (Q4 excluded for personal bias reasons going both ways) has been absolutely fantastic; no previous system has ever offered so many games I've enjoyed this much within such a short few months of its launch (even if I did come in late on the last rounds, getting this many titles was years worth of releases). PDZ isn't even terrible per se, but I doubt I'll finish it outside of coop.

Mr. Toast: The 360 is exactly as backwards compatible as they said it would be. Games need small updates downloaded to have the emulation work, and not all are currently available. The currently supported games can be found here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

Oblivion arrived for my flatmates today. I was tempted to get it, but decided it would be a bit too much of a distraction during the last month or so of my honours project, so instead I'm putting it on hold. Looks like a pretty epic game though, and the reviews so far have been hugely positive.

Been playing Blast Doors lately.. It's a fun game -- turn-based
strategy (I suppose that's what it is) where you each have one bunker.
You buy weapons and supplies and such at the beginning of each round,
then once the game starts take turns calculating the elevation of your
bunker's turret and the power behind each shot to slam someone in the
face with high-explosive ordinance.

It's somewhat old -- originally released in '96 but the latest version is from '99.

It's a free download; I'll provide the link:

Just finally finished COD2 in veteran mode. While it was insanely repetive near the end,(You almost can't tell the difference between the british and the american campains in Europe) I will say this. It is the longest, hardest FPS I ever played. Definitely got my moneys worth in those terms. There were times I wanted to throw my keyboard out the freaking window. There were several choke points, where, no matter what I tried, I just kept getting mowed down over and over.....and over and over! I spent at least two or more hours at three or four of the missions critical endings and while I prayed for the game to finally end, I was ultimately satisfied with the experience in general.

So whats next on the FPS horizon?

Episode 1 of course, but I think I like CRYSIS for my next big thrill. I know it's going to be ages before we see it though.

Any suggestions?

Crysis looks really awesome. If not just for the abilities it will use from CryEngine 2.

Slowly, but surely, games will be pretty environment interactive. I'm looking forward to it!

There's another game coming soon, one of the first I've seen advertise usage of Ageia's Physics processor (I think)

It just looks insane and crazy. It's like a mix between vehicles in Halo, Look of Far Cry, and Telekenesis.

Check out "Cell Factor" here: http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2510

Also, there's a new Zelda coming out for DS, Phantom Hourglass, it looks pretty sweet. It "looks" like four swords adventure, but seems to play like older zelda games. A nice feature, is you can draw on your maps. You can draw paths for your boat, and many other things. Here: http://media.ds.ign.com/media/694/694756/vids_1.html

I'm not sure. I've got it on my 360, so I haven't really
checked. If you've played any of the other Elder Scrolls games
then you're sure to enjoy this one. Many computers can't handle
it though, it's pretty demanding.

THere was a website that tested your specs though...

Played two demos yesterday, both of them pretty good.

First up was Tomb Raider: Legend, which felt a bit wierd at first (it is soooo not Tomb Raider controls), but ultimately I'm impressed with. It looks great and the platforming takes some good influences from Prince of Persia while still retaining the Tomb Raider vibe. The combat is a bit s**t, but nobody played Tomb Raider for the combat anyway  The demo was easy but had a nice puzzle at the end, which DID involve crates but also involved physics, which combined to be just...well, cool  I was planning on waiting for a 360 to get this, but I think the PC version looks great so will probably just buy a control pad and play it like that.

Next up was Condemned, which is an Xbox 360 FPS I wanted but is now coming out on the PC. I was a little disappointed, as with the melee focus of the game I expected there to be various ways to, well, swing stuff! Despite that, it is really atmospheric and the melee combat is pretty brutal if less developed than I'd have liked. You can use a whole load of stuff in the environment as a weapon - from pulling out the metal rebar from a broken pillar, or a plank of wood out of a broken wall, to ripping a pipe off a wall or just pistol whipping people with your sidearm. I'd probably rather wait for this on the 360 as my PC had trouble running it well with good graphics settings, and to be honest it didn't FEEL like a PC FPS to me.

And its not just about in car game play.. you do get out and move about as a person. Think Mad Max or death race 2000.. not bad.

I did a little beta testing of Auto Assault, and wish I could have done more but I've got too much on my plate. Maybe after I'm done with uni I'll pick it up.

At the moment I'm trying out a little Planetside, seeing as it is free (with tiny level caps though). There are a lot of horrible things about the game, but in general it is hard to be annoyed when you are part of a mammoth assault against and enemy base, or when you are desperately trying to hold your own against swarms of enemies while reinforcements reclaim the spawn tower they are using. Fun times.

Is Planetside free now!? I've wanted to play that since it came out,
but by the time I got broadband I figured it would be too old, and most
people would have moved on.

Oh, and also picked up a 360, damn its good. Been playing Advanced
Warfighter which is a pretty hard game to get the hang, but great fun
when you can actually hit the enemy. That bit with the minigun in the
trailer is intense. The xbox seems to look okay on a regular tv, but
man does it shine on a 42 inch plasma. The detail and environments are
incredible in GR:AW, and when you go split screen co-op or multiplayer
the size of each window is about that of a standard tv monitor.

Advanced Warfighter is probably the most enjoyable Ghost Recon game
I've played, the squad control is great and the game is really well
balanced. So far I've been controlling a squad of 4 guys, a
surveillance drone, an Abrhams battle tank and an Apache attack
chopper. Getting the Apache to strafe ground targets and troops from a
distance is a great. Co-op is good, though they remove some of your
movement abilities like hugging walls and peaking around corners,
sliding/diving behind cover, the little things that make it cool. Also
the co-op isn't actually the single player game, just a few missions
from it, though no where near as complex. The weaponry is great and
there is a huge variety to choose from. The guns also have a very
slight auto aim function, so that if your pretty much pointing at a
target and he's in the open your bullets will be drawn to him. It makes
up for the less precise and fast controls of the console compared to
the PC. A great game and highly recommended.

I agree with everything you just said. Sometimes I get shot
because I'm too busy admiring the beautiful lighting effects. Me
fathers getting a bigger TV, because imagine playing 4 player
splitscreen on a 30-inch regular TV.

I'm really annoyed that you can' get in cover in multiplayer though...

Sly Cooper. Condemned too, that was great. Indigo Prophecy. Advanced Warfighter is in my drive 360 right now, but I haven't really put much into it.

WoW sucked me back in.

I started an undead priest on Rexxar and she's up to level 29 right now.

I'm just doing Warsong Gulch battles over and over until I hit
Sergeant. PvP is a part of the game I never discovered last
summer -- I just found out how fun it is this week.

Condemned: Criminal Origins.Just started it, about an hour into it. Very satisfying visually, and the melee focus is unique. Definitely a console feel to it though you're right there, and lots of hidden stuff which I like. Much more interesting to me than perfect dark zero, which feels alittle to plasticy and simplistic somehow. Maybe it's just the graphics though. I'll force myself to play it more later and see if I can get into it.

Sadly, of the last three game that I just "HAD" to own, I have either not played them, or only played them on a limited basis. These are relatively recent purchases.

$175.00 later, and I am still unsatisfied with gaming.

The only titles I want to see fruition now are Duke 4 ever and Fallout 3.

In fact, upon reflection, I have perhaps a dozen games I have bought that are left unfinished over the course of the past 3 years.

I have decided against spontaneous purchasing from now on.

The best things in life, aren't things.

I just got a brand spakin' new copy of Silhouette Mirage for PlayStation. It was ported over to the US by Working Designs, so I imagine, as it was for me, it will be hard to find! The game was originally made by Treasure ... and if you know ANYTHING, you know that Treasure doesn't make bad games. This game is no exception.

It's incredibly fun. It's a sidescrolling action game, but it has a complex structure implemented through simplistic controls. It follows some of the same ideas in Ikaruga ... two modes, for you, and the enemy. Your mode is determined by the direction you're facing. (Which can be changed with the push of a button) There are several attacks for various positions and a shield that repels a like color attack ... and actually harms whatever it hits.

It's just fun.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Bought Tomb Raider Legends today and I am damned impressed. The early
screenshots didn't look like much, but they were obviously holding a
lot back. Besides the character models in the cut sequences aren't as
good as they could be everything is incredible. The environments are
breathtaking, detailed, and oh so cool. Movement is extremely fluid,
all the favorite moves are back with a number more thrown in for good
measure. The game feels like the original few but looks like the latest
and greatest. The best thing is unlike GRAW you don't need a 46 inch
digital plasma tv to appreciate the graphics. On my old tv it blows
GRAW out of the water, leaping well past games of previous consoles,
unlike GRAW which only looked a bit better. The puzzles are fantastic
and those who enjoyed and played the original games will get back into
the swing of things quickly. The weapon system is a little clunky, but
I'm still getting used to it so I imagine it'll get easier to use. So
far Tomb Raider Legends is easily a 9.5/10.

Picked up a couple of games lately as they were in the Easter sales.

First up was SSX: On Tour for the PS2. Sadly, they didn't have any of the Xbox version in stock, and while in general the game doesn't suffer for it (it looks and runs great on the PS2), the save times are a complete JOKE. Seriously, it's absolutely ridiculous. You complete an event, go back to the menu, and it autosaves. You then go into the shop and buy something, and on leaving, it autosaves. When you get back to the main map? It autosaves. Might not seem like a big deal, but for some unknown reason, autosaves take about 10 seconds each and every time. It's one of very few games I've come across with which you can't complain at load times, but sure as hell can about save times. Otherwise its great, if a little inconsistant in difficulty. Also, why in this day and age do some games seem to struggle for randomising things? The soundtrack has a lot of tracks to it, but I constantly get the same bunch of tracks playing. Doesn't let you set any sort of linear play order either to at least ensure you don't get a lot of repetition. Shocking. Buy it if you want a snowboarding game where simply riding round banked corners feels good though - I love the amped series for tricks (an area where it really does outshine SSX) but SSX rules the roost for general "riding".

The other game was Project Snowblind for the Xbox. Critically this game did really well and scored around 8 or 9 out of 10 in most reviews, but I've never spoken to anybody who played it and I guess it kinda bombed at retail. I grabbed it for a measly ?3 and though I think it seems to have been a bit overrated, for that money I can't complain. Some pretty cool weapons and augmentations (eg. visual enhancements, ballistic shielding, enhanced reactions (read bullet time)), and the action is thick and fast. Controls seem a little off to me though - the look control seems to have a bit too much of a zero-movement threshold, and then when you've moved the stick a little further it moves too quick. Its not game breaking, but its annoying.
