Republic Commando was exceptional at times and mediocre at others.
Moments of greatness, with some of the best set pieces I've ever played
in an FPS, with dull and repetitive corridor crawling between them. Oh
and the ending was a total letdown - you can't just END on that note!
That said, after playing that game I was more of a Star Wars fan than
ever before - it really gets you into the atmosphere of the SW universe.
Resident Evil 4 is absolutely bloody incredible. Very little to
criticise about it - I've played through it twice, and I'm fairly sure
it won't be long before I make a return trip. All that, and it isn't
even my game.
Haunting Ground was a fairly cool successor to the Clock Tower series
of games. It basically puts the player into the shoes of a truely
helpless girl and has her being chased around by nasty people.
Thankfully it didn't have the silly superpowers that Alyssa had in CT3
and instead gives you a reliable (well, if you treat him right) dog to
aid you, but it still suffered from pitting the player against
decreasingly frightening enemies. The bad guys should get
scarier, not the opposite  While it doesn't have the rather gruesome
murder scenes of CT3 (lets watch a granny and her beloved son getting
thrown in an acid bath! or perhaps watch a little girl get a
sledgehammer to the head!), there are some some rather disgusting ways
to die, and the sound effects that play out when you are killed by one
of your pursuers is pretty disturbing if you let it play out. Worth
playing if you want something a bit different from your survival
horror. Oh and for a PS2 game, it is absolutely stunningly gorgeous.
Viewtiful Joe enrages me as much as it impresses me. I'm persevering
(just reached chapter 7) but many of the puzzles or tricks to doing
things are far from obvious and its not fun to die to a boss 20 odd
times before you figure out how to injure him! I love the style, and
the gameplay is fun, its just some of the infuriating segments that
take the edge off it for me.
