Wow, KungFuSquirrel, I'm envious. You have a wife who plays video
games with you. Despite the fact that my fiance is a computer
programmer, she wants nothing to do with any computer games.

She probably has the ability to code mods on a professional level, but
she doesn't even play any of my maps. I guess it's just not in
her blood.

On the topic of game playing, I am replaying HL2, and I plan to replay
it over and over until my eyes bleed. I am exploring the
surrounding and admiring the beauty of the architecture a lot more the
second time around. It's just such a wonderful game.
My girlfriend literally begs me to play WoW. It's really odd, she also
loves watching me play MGS3. I guess I've slowly rubbed off on her.

Oh, and Crono. I think the only place we disagree is with Mario
Sunshine. I honestly thought that's probably the biggest disappointment
of the 100+ games I own. If there was one game of my collection beside
the one or two bargain bin games that I wouldn't miss it'd be that one.
It was just a brutally "lite" version of Mario 64 with less worlds,
less diversity, lame story and just overall was not worth the money.
After the 6 years or whatever it was we deserved a lot better for a
marquee game. The only thing good about it was the graphics and frames,
but that wasn't much of a stretch considering how incredibly small each
level was and how little range there was in the difference of the
textures used.

I'm well aware I'm one of the 5 people on Earth who likes that game.

Just to note, I hated Mario 64 with a passion (It's okay ... just doesn't feel like "Mario"). It felt terribly planned out, not nearly the amount of "fun-effort" was put into it, or it seemed. It appeared that their new console needed a familiar game title. But I also know ... I'm one of the 5 people on Earth who think that.

Also, I finally beat Metroid Fusion tonight. I wonder when the hell they plan on making a "Metroid 5".

I really miss side scrolling games. I mean, I love the 3d environments that games have, but they are dominating every game ... enough is enough. I think game development should get back into the "if it fits" groove.

We actually have the ability to make a game look identical to an animated series ... yet that isn't utilized since an overall perception seems to be "Real Is Better".

I very like "RAINBOW SIX 3: RAVEN SHIELD" (prodobly everyone know about it),

I also like "Tom Clancy's: Ghost Recon" (somethink like RS, but there are also tanks),

As everyone "Half-Life 2" with CS:S,

"The Thing" was cool. TPS, survival horror. North Pole countryside. Something dropped from the sky, prodobly meteor. Peoples who were send there lost contact with the world. Peoples send there two special operations squads. With first they also lost contact. Secnond squad discovered unidentyficated crashed object. They were prepared for this situation...

NFS V: Proshe was in my opinion the best part of NFS. NFS: Underground was also good.

Oh s**t. I forgot about UT2004.

I played only demo, but it's cool.

MGS3, as I believe I mentioned before, rocks your socks. I still play through it just to watch the kick-ass cutscenes. Some of the crap they make the models do is amazing, IMO.

Also, I recently started playing Star Ocean: Till the End of Time again, and I have to say that if you're looking for a good RPG for the PS2, this is one to get. The storyline is pretty engaging, the battle system kicks ass (real-time, 3d, you control exactly what the main character does), and it's fairly challenging.

I just beat all of the Ratchet and Clank series. Very addictive platformers, yes they are. Also, I beat Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and was quite appalled by the lack of any multiplayer servers. ANd, of course, GTA:SA was awesome!

oh yeah, totaly forgot about Lineage ][... Not that damn bad at all. If any of u ppl play, me name is Klayd, drop me a PM sometime.

What's the best console? console game?

There isn't really a best console as such, its all down to the person's
preference of games. I personally like the Xbox the best, as it has
some really well done exclusive titles (Otogi games, Phantom Crash,
Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Project Gotham Racing 2, etc...)
that look and play awesome, its controller is great once you get the
hang of it, and its nice having a hard drive to save all your games and
use for custom soundtracks. I also own a PS2, mainly because I wanted
to play the Final Fantasy games (which were a little disappointing
compared to the PS1 games), but its pretty good for more Japanese
titles, and worth owning for ICO alone  The gamecube is a cool little
machine thats great for multiplayers, but I haven't really be gripped
by it for any single player stuff yet.

FPS and Strategy titles are the real powerhouses on the PC as there is currently no match for a keyboard/mouse. For about any other genre, though - platformers, RPGs, racing games, beat-em-ups, keyboard/mouse combos start getting pretty clunky. I may pick up a PC controller soon to use on some titles.

I've got all 3 of the current generation of consoles. My favorite is the Xbox, but I love all 3 and here's a rundown of why (of course, only my opinion, your milage may vary  ):

XBOX: Top graphics power of the three. Best choice for most multi-platform games for looks. S-controller has a ton of options and is the best controller for FPS action, at least as far as I'm concerned. Exclusives like Halo/Halo 2 and Riddick are the pinnacle of the console FPS market.

GAMECUBE: You do not know joy until you have held a Wavebird. First-party wireless control action is a huge plus. Usually the overall best/most natural control scheme for games. Exclusive selection is mostly limited to a few core franchises, but within these are some really great games, especially for offline multiplayer. Also the only place you'll find some gems like Eternal Darkness and Ikaruga, as well as RE4.

PLAYSTATION 2: New small version just rocks. By far the largest selection of titles and undisputed king of platforming action - Ratchet, Jak, Sly, etc. Hell, those games enough are reason enough to get a PS2.

With my wife farther than me in the Ratchet games, I try to not talk to her too much about them as to not spoil anything for myself, but what I have talked to her about just demonstrates over and over again some of the finest design work ever to go into a series of games. They're absolute masterpieces on pretty much every level. There's a lot that can be drawn from these titles and applied to practically any genre.

I got Ace Combat: Unsung War for my PS2 the other day, and I've been
enjoying it. I'm not a huge fan of flight sims normally as they are too
slow paced, but this one throws you right into the action. It also has
an ACTUAL STORY, rather than just throwing you into missions without
any real context. They have done a really nice job making the battles
atmospheric by having pretty much constant radio chatter going on
between your wingmen, allies, or enemies. Looks awesome for a PS2 game
as well, really nicely textured.

Is Far Cry: Instincts actually a sequel? I thought it was just a port
to the consoles with some changes / additions, in much the same way as
CoD: Finest Hour was.

I've been playing console games as of late... some good ones:

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

Resident Evil 4

Lord of the Rings: Third Age

They're all pretty solid, Oddworld is great fun, specially if you're a
fan of the series, is a FPS/Third Person game in the Oddworld Universe.

RE4 is hands down the best of RE series so far, amazing graphics and gameplay on GC.

Lord of The Rings: Third Age is a LOTR RPG, much like the Final Fantasy
Series. It's pretty simple, but it follows the movies giving it
an awesome story, and the combat is pretty good, however it's
repetitive.

Yeah, it's a port. It has a completly different story and such though.

Nickel, try using the most generic sound driver they have and you should get sound. Don't worry about it being DTS ES 6.1 or anything, it's an old game.

I've actually been playing Zero Wing. That game may have been terribly trasnlated, but it's pretty fun.

I keep hearing I have to play Phalanx and Macross Plus for the SNES.

I've been getting back into Infantry Online from Sony again, very addictive. I thoroughly enjoy sniping people while I remain relatively safe with my cloaking device, puwahahahaha! The subscription's $7 a month, but you don't have to pay to play, just it'll be easier to own 'em if you do... but can it get easier than sniping while cloaked? I don't think so.

And World of Warcraft is waaaay too addictive. As my second MMORPG, I'm
damned impressed (the first being Ultima Online, which I hated).

for some reason, I got turned off pretty bad at the little mine-cart

again. I have too many time consuming games that I still have to beat.
The total avg. time for my collection is easily in the thousands of
hours. I still have to get around to beating or at least getting far
enough in some of the bigger titles.

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath - very cool game, definately worth grabbing.

Katamri Damacy (sp?) - gotta love it. friggin out there, but fun as hell.

oh, and I also picked up a DS and mario 64. Sofar, It's pretty damn cool. The nub control takes some getting used to, but very innovative control scheme. Looking forward to more titles.

Not been playing it of course, but I just read today that Beyond Good
and Evil looks to be getting the sequel everyone who played it hoped
for. Indeed, it was apparently the first of a trilogy. The next part is
seemingly going to be a launch title for a next gen console, which
might see it getting some of the recognition it deserves. Good news for

Andrew, I know the rumours are common but this is something I read in
the Official Xbox mag today, and they claim to have heard it from
Ubisoft. Perhaps still not 100% certain, but its better than a random
internet rumour at least

The demo disk from said magazine had an Xbox Live demo of Unreal
Championship 2, and I'm pretty impressed. The addition of melee combat
and a third person view really changes the gameplay dynamic to
something far more suited to consoles.

I was about to start a thread for this, but luckily I searched first!

Anyway -- I just bough Timesplitters: Future Perfect for PS2 along with that old game for PC, Sacrifice. I loved Timesplitters 2, and I've heard good things about Sacrifice. I have to play them but I'll let you know once I get into them.

I rented Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
a few days ago and after about 45 minutes put it down. Too much
falling and dieing for my tastes. And I consider myself to be
pretty good at videogames. I appreciate the fact that it's trying
to remake Ghosts and Goblins, but I just didn't find it to be any fun. The first Jak and Dakter was more forgiving, and therefore more enjoyable. I guess I just never like seeing a "Game Over" screen.

I've played and bet Swat 4. Was quite a fun game despite some minor
annoyances. The weapons had a nice feel to them when filling the
suspects with lead. A few of the levels were quite thrilling too.

Overall a nice game.

Anyways, I got Rome Total War and have played it so much. Kick ass game.

I downloaded PoA and have been playing that tons as well.

I got Star Wars Battlefront and it kicks total ass

I got Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and it's fun for awhile

I got Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood (old game, 2.50 at Best Buy) it's really addicting.

I started playing The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind again, and remembered how good it was.

That's about it.

BATTLEFRONT SUCKS ASS
I guess someone has to like it.

Republic Commando is pretty good though. It's what Halo would be like if it were fun ... with a better Single Player then MultiPlayer. (I love that planet)

Pariah, oh, what a piece of s**t. I think it's actually worse then Brothers in Arms, which isn't really a bad game as much as it just has clunky motions ... and terrible accuracy ... and it takes five shots in the face to kill someone point blank range ... not even Jedi Knight is that bad.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Republic Commando was exceptional at times and mediocre at others.
Moments of greatness, with some of the best set pieces I've ever played
in an FPS, with dull and repetitive corridor crawling between them. Oh
and the ending was a total letdown - you can't just END on that note!
That said, after playing that game I was more of a Star Wars fan than
ever before - it really gets you into the atmosphere of the SW universe.

Resident Evil 4 is absolutely bloody incredible. Very little to
criticise about it - I've played through it twice, and I'm fairly sure
it won't be long before I make a return trip. All that, and it isn't
even my game.

Haunting Ground was a fairly cool successor to the Clock Tower series
of games. It basically puts the player into the shoes of a truely
helpless girl and has her being chased around by nasty people.
Thankfully it didn't have the silly superpowers that Alyssa had in CT3
and instead gives you a reliable (well, if you treat him right) dog to
aid you, but it still suffered from pitting the player against
decreasingly frightening enemies. The bad guys should get
scarier, not the opposite  While it doesn't have the rather gruesome
murder scenes of CT3 (lets watch a granny and her beloved son getting
thrown in an acid bath! or perhaps watch a little girl get a
sledgehammer to the head!), there are some some rather disgusting ways
to die, and the sound effects that play out when you are killed by one
of your pursuers is pretty disturbing if you let it play out. Worth
playing if you want something a bit different from your survival
horror. Oh and for a PS2 game, it is absolutely stunningly gorgeous.

Viewtiful Joe enrages me as much as it impresses me. I'm persevering
(just reached chapter 7) but many of the puzzles or tricks to doing
things are far from obvious and its not fun to die to a boss 20 odd
times before you figure out how to injure him! I love the style, and
the gameplay is fun, its just some of the infuriating segments that
take the edge off it for me.

Just played and beat kkrieger: a 96kb 1st person shooter. Extremely amazing (for its size.) There was a thread about it in early 2004 I think that died. It has great texturing and more dynamic lighting that one can shake a stick at. The monsters and layout was really nice, not just for a 96kb filesize. It has footsteps, TONS of dynamic lighting, 5 weapons, a few different cool looking monsters, and simplistic playing.

The only downfall is that you will probably get 10 fps if you are lucky. A lotta fun for such a small size. Even has autosaves! Google for kkrieger. Should take about 15 minutes to beat.

Ground Control II is a ridiculously fun game, lots of stuff to blow up, and great gameplay. My only beef is that you can't construct defensive turrets, but that's not really a problem, I'm just used to being able to.

Painkiller's got some very violent gameplay, which I always enjoy... the lack of any decent storyline/plot didn't really matter since I got to kill so many things. Really creepy asylum, too. (kkrieger looks a lot like it, tbh... not so much the architecture but that weapon looks like PK's shotgun and that monster would definitely fit into the game)

XIII's cel-shaded awesomeness, I loved every mission although the ones where you have to knock out instead of slaughter the guards could get really annoying. Shame it's so damn short.

Evil Genius is the only game of these I actually bought and it's unfortunately the worst (or at least the most challenging). I didn't like the idea of using cheat codes to get money so I took advantage of a loophole (one that requires an objective to be completed before you start getting attacked) to make my income... it took me about 16 hours of income to get enough to build up my base. Later you get the option of moving to a new island, so I did, and naturally I had to build my base again but I didn't have the money anymore... cheat codes to the rescue. It's still fun (and even funny) but I'm sure the replayability will be lacking.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

A while ago before it was released I was looking at Dungeon Lords and Guild Wars and thought they both looked cool.

Now they are both out and both good!
I downloaded a demo and loved it. It's only 18 quid so what a great deal for a multiplayer game thats only ?18!

I love Zelda and can't wait for Twilight princess.
Zone of the Enders is a great game series.

The 96k thing would be so damn awesome if they made it multiplayer.

I beat Psychonauts the other day. Very, very good platformer. Some very
funny writing, weird misshapen artistic style, and great level design
all around. Even if you hate platformers, give this one a try - it's
very forgiving. Plus, it's only $30 USD on the PC! You can't go wrong.

Dungeon Lords would be better if the version they released wasn't an Alpha. The only program in which I look forward to patches.

I've heard Psychonauts is "better" then some other platformers, like Ratchet and Clank. I said, "blasphemy", but I'm checking it out just in case.

Following the recent Killzone2 video from E3 I bought Killzone1 on PS2 since it was only ?10 new. When it came out last year it was touted as the PS2's answer to Halo but wasn't too well received by the press (72% average on gamerankings.com).

But I must say, I'm impressed. The art direction is excellent with trench warfare and ruined cities used to great effect along with an enemy force that is very reminiscent of the Combine. The visuals are as good as I've seen in a FPS on the PS2 (though there are still quite a few graphical gliches) and the presentation is top drawer. It doesn't play as well as it looks though and has missions cut into short 10 minute chunks with long load times in between.

Well worth checking out especially due to the low price.

Killzone is horrible. Yes, the art direction is decent; but that
doesn't make up for horrible controls, horrible graphics (and fps),
ridiculously repetitive gameplay and sounds etc. All the hallmarks of a
stereotypical console first person shooter. The only FPS really
checking out on the PS2 is Timesplitters, which happens to be available
on other consoles now; the controller isn't really built for fps games like the Xbox for example.

I loved Timesplitters2. I never had any beef with the ps2
controller though. Not once did I wish I was using something
different.

I played the Killzone demo a while back, and while it was nothing
stellar it felt solid enough to me. I was pretty impressed by the
graphics and the style, as you guys mentioned, is pretty spot on. Guns
felt kinda wierd though, like there was no sense of accuracy about them
or something. Where did you find it for ?10 keved? I've been saying I'd
pick it up if I found it for that price, but so far the cheapest I've
seen was ?15 on play.com.

I know what you mean, the aiming is a bit cumbersome. I don't mind it though - it does mean no more firing single shots with lowly machine guns to snipe enemies 50 metres away. What bothers me more about the weapons & firing mechanics is that the guns are very "in your face" and your view pivots around a heck of a lot (when reloading a gun your view automatically pivots down briefly etc).

I bought it from amazon.co.uk. I've just checked and it's actually down to ?8 new now!
