I had an extremely busy day today in the hospital. Many of the patients have complicated problems, but one of them all of a sudden became unable to stand up or walk.
To investigate, we ordered a bunch of brain scans. But in addition, we need to check his spinal fluid for any signs of infection. It's up to me to suck the spinal fluid from his back. This procedure is commonly known as the spinal tap, but doctors like to call it "lumbar puncture".
To do it right, I had to align his spine perfectly without any rotation. Too much flexion would prevent the needle from reaching the spinal space, and too much rotation would twist his vertebrae so the needle could not advance.
Luckily, I had a good nurse to help me hold him down. His mother was also in the room, comforting him. I got it with a single stick. There's no bleeding. Crystal clear spinal fluid streamed out from the needle like pure mountain stream.
Boy, that felt even better than getting a head shot in CS:S.

Well done. I can imagine to work under pressure is one of the hardest things to do. Especially in your business.
I have had a spinal anesthesia once. But it wasn't half as exciting as a spinal tab must be.
First I thought about sending my injured neighbourkids to you. (Due to
the remarkably bad qualifications of our local hospitals' personnel).
But I assume you've got enough work already.
Keep up the good work (And you might be promoted to "SnarkPits best pediatrist with outstanding achievements")

This reminds me of an operation my dad went through, except that it was
the opposite thing, injecting iodate (i think) rather than extracting.
It's a very primitive way of determining whether someone has damage to
the inner-spine. The rack you have to be layed on reminds me of
medieval torture as it stretches and squeezes it's victimy excessively. So, if
you don't have a damaged spine after all,you will after this test.

You know, sometimes I feel that the satisfaction you feel when you do a
job perfectly is the ultimate feeling in the world. That feeling of
elation at that moment just can't be beaten... You feel like you want
to remember it forever, and tell everyone about it, like you want to
put it up on a banner for everybody to see. I imagine it must be all
the more so for a job such as yours.
I'll stop before I get any more sickening

nice job, my dads a vet, but i dont think hes ever had to do a spinal tap on any animals if they have such a thing
