Alright, if you thought Spore's DRM debacle was pathetic, here is a new highlight:

The company that publishes flight simulator X-Plane had a brilliant idea: To address complaints by customers about having to have DVDs in the drive, they offer a $29 (!!!) USB stick that acts as a portable DRM device. Not only could you get another DVD drive for that price (or still have to sacrifice an USB slot), people who aren't as loyal and pirate the game of course do not have to bother with any of this. Multiple layers of failure, that are only topped by the following...

To make things worse, this email-exchange between a fan and the company's CEO, Austin Meyer, ends with the Chief Executive Officer replying this:
holy shit you are an idiot
where did i ever say, imply, or ever so much as HINT that ANYTHING actually WORKS????????????????????????????????????
Wow. It really gives you an insight into the process that leads companies to force more and more ridiculous copyright restrictions down their customers' throats. There is no logic. Just juvenile rage. The CEO of a company, writing like a 13-year old posting on an IMDB-board. ;(

geesus, that's a lot of sounds. Makes you realize how much production value actually goes into the making of a game like Half_life 2. He spent maybe a minute or two making most of those sounds, and A sound technician needs to have the tools to make the genuine sound effects. Never ceases to amaze me how much work goes into a full production game.

haha that's a blast. 1200+- sounds ; 5 seconds each to record and name them = 100 minutes, 150 after a few pops.

Myself I woulda been a lil more adventurous with the profanity. Nothing like a a pistol to tell the world to F off. Loved the antlion squishy thing tho

Discovered it totally by accident, but I felt it worth posting....

In Photoshop, I knew that if you had snap turned on, you can temporarily turn it off when moving things around by holding down ctrl, but what I didn't know is that when using the text tool, when you go to re-size a text box and you're holding down ctrl, it not only allows you to re-size without having to worry about snap, but it also re-sizes the actual point value of the text already in that text box! Instead of having to select the text separately and use the point value text box on the character panel. -That's cool! :geek:

Niborius, what your retailer has done is illegal. ODST releases the same time world wide (sep 22), no copies are supposed to be released before that.

Oh well, don't spoil it for me. One more sleep left!

Or more obviously we got it earlier because we Pre-ordered it. It happend before too. I can't believe the retailer to do anything illegal, since It's a very good one. Anyways I won't spoil anything ofcourse :D

I'm pretty sure that when you pre order something it means you're just sort of reserving yourself a copy of the game when it comes out and not that you get it early.

I've pre ordered games before and you don't get them earlier than the release date. The retailers ofcourse get them earlier than the release date but they're not supposed to release them until the official release date.

Maybe it's different in The Netherlands. :uncertain:

The retailer you bought the game from, is there only one instance of that particular shop in your country or is there more than one instance of that shop that you know of?

Niborius, I've looked into it and it seems that both some stores are selling the game early (for an unknown but legal reason) and some people are obtaining copies of the game early by illegal means. So looks like your store is most likely selling the game early legally.

Problem solved. ;)

Weird though... I would have thought that a developer would want their game to be released ON the released date across the board. :|

I'm sure it might have been mentioned here before, since it is rather popular, but it's very interesting. Apparently it is the hardest riddle game on the internet. I have to agree, I'm still stuck only on level 6, I have to figure it out..

First of all: Your postcount is pure madness! :flail:

Also the short answer seems to be "Yes". Not that anything had been dramatically different in 2007...

We got a new site and cow emoticons, though. So Snarkpit is very much alive.

I was supposed to try that but honestly, since you can either choose to create the normal map from the texture's alpha channel (so you can have control of how the normal map is) or from the RGB channel (so vtf edit sort of guesses) I don't need to anymore.

That's pretty neat; I didn't know vtf Edit could do that. But then again, I don't use vtf Edit. For some reason, I still prefer to save my textures as targas and drag & drop them into vtex. I never trusted the vtf PS plug-in. But it's good to know there's yet another way of doing it. -Nice find.

That's crazy. Don't get me wrong, Half-Life is an awesome game series but Half-Life and Gordon Freeman are two different things, how on Earth is Freeman the greatest video game character?? He is far from it. He has absolutely no character what so ever, he is essentially a place holder for the player themselves in the Half-Life universe.

I guess I've always had something against Gordon Freeman, he gets way too much recognition both in the Half-Life universe and by the fans for doing nothing really. I guess when people were voting for Freeman they were voting for Half-Life. :uncertain:

I love Halo but I probably wouldn't have voted for the Chief because Halo and the Chief are two different things, I agree with Niborius though the Chief is better than Freeman imo.

I just started playing this wonderful little indie adventure game called Machinarium

http://machinarium.net/demo/

It's $20 on steam, and IMO well worth it (but there's a demo if you follow the link above). The art, sound, and design are superb - very surreal, dreamlike, beautiful, spooky, funny, qwirky. At times it reminds me of:
  • out of this world
  • Halflife
  • City of lost the children
  • Steamboy
  • Howl's moving castle
Check it out!
