It's official, Nightwatch is dead. Sad but true.

Oh well, let's applaud their efforts and hope the remaining team-members will find their way around now that this is over. It has definitely been an impressive attempt and I don't think it's a shame to say it's over when it's just not going anymore.

Man that sucks The thing is ive been talking with Proffesional victim trieng to get my hands on the original hl1 maps and have had fruitless efforts. I never supported this entire source switch but i guess it was nightwatches begining of the end

I don't think the Source switch had much to do with it. Dedicated and motivated HL modders are probably even harder to find than Source people. There's no exact rule for success, to put it in the words of ArenaNets lead concept artist (who recently spoke in my city about game-development  ).

As for trying to get content, that's not exactly what they're waiting for right now judging from the newspost...

I already had a feeling this mod wasnt going to be finishd when they cancelled the HL1 version and switched to source. Oh well, nothing gained nothing lost.

Going through their media page made me more nastalgic, some of the best
HL1 levels came from that site. It is a real shame that they will never
see the light of day ever.

They've got to release that material - some of those levels represent the absolute zenith of HL1's engine.

I'm thinking the same, Cass. Though, I guess the authors of those maps won't release them, at least I don't feel comfortable releasing something I haven't fully finished (enough) yet. Perhaps it would also shatter the great image we have of it when we'd really see it in-game, I dunno.

A real shame. I've been following this for quite a while.

On the subject of them releasing the source content...

"Anyone who thinks that this is the perfect opportunity to ask for source content with the explanation "since you're not going to use it anyway" will get exactly the response they deserve."

Basically don't hold your breath.

Its not like we're discussing donating organs after we die. No one needs the content, unless the authors desire to release it. Anyone whom thinks to bother them with requests for said content, deserves our scorn.

I believe these guys feel badly enough without anyone heartlessly adding more grief or guilt.

The best things in life, aren't things.

Well Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but ive discussed to death to get Proffesional Victim to release anything so far he hasnt. And the only stuff he will is for personal use and i havent even gotten ahold of that. From what it seems theres a possibilty for release of something but PV has told me no one wants to release Unfinished work

Why are they so averse to releasing the source content? Makes no sense.

I have a hard time believing that. I hate to voice negative conjecture, especially about a mod whose work and staff I admired, but I suspect that what they have showcases embarassingly little of what the community expected of so promising and professional a mod.

For the love of god... no... The mod that was on the top of the
list... down. All the quality content... argh. This is a sad day.
Perhaps we should have a quiet moment for the memory of this extremely
promising now fallen mod.

A minute of silence.

I don't understand why PV doesn't want to release the HL1 stuff either. Seems rather strange to me.

I don't think it's as much a "this will never happen thing" as it is "screw you vultures trying to snap it all up." Like asking a recently tragically widowed woman, "hey, your husband died yesterday, can I sleep with you tonight?"

Plus, contrary to Cass' suspicions, there is a metric s**tload of content there... a lot to be organized, etc.

I've more thoughts on the subject but will be collecting them for a postmortem of sorts in the near future.

I'd like to hear some more from KFS, especially since he was the mother of this thing. Did it surpise you that the mod died? How was the team when you were still leading it?
It's sad to see such a beautiful peice of work wasted, especially after the years of hard work put into it. I had been following NW since the beginning.

Either way i just dont really see Proffesional Victim Releasing anything as ive said ive been trying to get him to publicly release some of the stuff for a long time. If you would like to see my failed attempts at getting some of the content released look here http://forums.hl-nightwatch.net/viewtopic.php?t=1777

there are many other threads where PV outlines exactly why he doesnt want anything released

Well, I really don't consider any of it wasted. I'm sure others may disagree, but so many great things have come out of it. It's easy to dwell on the failings, and believe me, we had plenty of those. But we did a ton of s**t right, too, and that still makes me damn proud of what came together in the time it was around.

I f**ked the project, plain and simple. It was my baby, but when a job opportunity came up and I was getting married and all that, I had to take it.

Anyway. I'm working on a better overview of my take on things. I'll make sure it does the rounds of the sites discussing the closure, or at least shows up on the NW site.

yes, The team did alot it gave a new lease on Hl1 Goldsrc The level design was probally the best out of many mods. The levels where simply put amazing and well built. I loved how they redid some of the models with better skins etc the project showed that goldsrc had more in it than people believed

Every few months or so I'd check in on this mod to see the content, and marvel at the HL1 shots. Seriously the best I'd ever seen.

So, I didn't follow the project very closely, but I did take the time to read PV's final words, and his dev journal entry about the end.

What struck me the most was how bitter he was over people's irresponsibility. I don't blame him, though. I was just surprised how willing people were to leave the project without giving notice, and carrying on lies before disappearing. I guess it's easy for some people to convince themselves that the people they interact with online aren't real... in some strange way.
