Since the most recent update, I cant run Hammer. It gives an error saying "Extra App ID set to 211, but no SteamAppID".

Has anyone else got this? Does anyone know of a fix?

I would try to reinstall the SDK, or verify the files.

I'll try that, thanks.

edit: Refreshing SDK content didnt help, and I think I'd rather avoid the 400mb download to completely reinstall it. Is this just happening for me, or does anyone else get this?

I had it, and tried to ask the support team (CRAP service BTW) and they told me that the latest update fixed it. I don't remember if it did, but it's working now. Though it could have been myself that fixed it, and if i did i don't remember how.. Maybe you should try to get the latest update..

OR!! (Oh god I'm smart) you could try to ask the support team how to fix it and if they don't have an answer you could sue their asses :chainsaw:

It's the latest update that caused it... restarting Steam and refreshing content havent fixed it. I've heard other people are getting this problem, hopefully itll get fixed soon like last time.

Yeah I get it too.

I don't even know what to call this. Incompetence? Stupidity?

And when I click on the hammer icon, it means I wanna map NOW, not
SOON. That's part of the reason I got the damn thing. I wish valve stopped shoving updates out the door without proper
testing.

As if HL2 mapping wasn't dead enough in my eyes.

Model viewer is b0rked here, I haven't checked Hammer yet though.

And yeah, it is getting annoying, those bad updates. Auto-updating itself is nice, but not if it's continually going like this.

I think itll be like this until the beta SDK becomes official. Usually when this happens, the beta still works, probably because they only test with the beta.

Maybe you should compile it with a batch file or something, hammers probably stealing all its resources.

I like how you put the compile log window over the 3D box so we couldn't see the map in progress.

Well it just finished refreshing the SDK content; nothing. What a way to piss 2 hours away. :swear:

I guess it's better to get an error than to have the illusion that it actually works.

after an update, a desktop shortcut doesnt work, you have to run it from the SDK. after that your desktop shortcuts will work.

So everyone else says steam gives them trouble with the new update, and
discusion comes about. I mention my problem, and I get sarcasm?

Steam hasn't given me a problem since the early days -- this is the
first problem I've had, with this new update, in which I've actually
been barred from Steam.

And their "Find Answers" wasn't any help either.

Bah: Turns out I left hammer running during the update process. So sue me.

I hate how "busy" their servers are. It's odd that I can download a demo but not HL2 content. ChkDsk ran without my permission again and moved pretty much all my game files, corrupting some. So, I had to do a refresh in steam ... didn't work, just kept saying it had to download the data again ... in an infinite loop ... now the servers are too busy to let me download anything ... sigh

/me goes back to mapping with Hammer 3.5

It's a pitty someone doesn't attempt to make a version of Hammer that
doesn't have to be rigged up to ST3AM in order to run. In the

With the next update, Valve should really make an option so that we can run Hammer without receiving automatic Steam updates.

It's not like anyone is going to pirate the editor. After all, it is already free software.

Of all people, they should understand and appreciate the mapping community. We are the ones who sustain the popularity of their games.

Just deselect the "keep updated" option for the SDK. It shouldn't update. The only thing, I think, you can't keep unupdated is the steam platform, everything else you can turn off.

I think if you check that, it doesnt automatically update, but it forces an update if you try to run it and there has been an update.

I didn't see any new update. I just
checked the Steam
News
, and there's nothing since Dec. 22nd.

All the Valve employees are spending Christmas with their families
right now. No one except us hardcore mappers are online
discussing mapping on Christmas day.
I read this at the Steam forum...

Ok so here's my tragedy.

I start my computer this morning and, after a brief loading, I open firefox to
see what was new over at the pit (this place is addictive, lemme tell ya') .
After browsing for a while my attention is caught by the little steam icon on
the taskbar. I notice that it was updating. Curious, I bring the steam window
forward and notice that the item being updated was the SDK. I go white. I
clearly recalled switching the auto-update function off. I could also remember,
just as clearly, that this usually had no effect what-so-ever. Thanks to my
incredible self-control, I manage to refrain myself from ripping the
internet-cable to shreds. I wait, and after a few minutes it finishes updating.
Fearing the worst, I click on Hammer. I?m greeted by a screen saying that
"the specified file cannot be found". No reaction. I was used, after
all, to putting-up with this kind of bullcrap after every single update VALVe
pushed out the door. I refresh the SDK content, and after a few minutes of "copying
files, please wait", I, once again, attempt to run hammer. Surprise,
surprise! Error 211 bla bla bla. THIS after managing to get it to work the day
before.

I swear, I'm going to mail valve a bomb as soon as I find a big enough
envelope.

I just got everything updated and got that annoying "error". Anyway, the removing of "ToolsAppId" entry in whatever gameinfo.txt should work. As said in one of those links though, you can only work on brushes, no models. (since it is in the 211 ID)
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

For some reason the SDK insists on updating daily. After finishing I'm
forced to refresh the SDK content or else I get the missing APP error.
After the refresh I get the 211 error and have to shut down steam and
then restart it as to redownload the beta SDK, all this in the context
of having switched auto-update off. And to think I actually said good things about steam and valve in the recent past.

/me considers learning unrealED although it's unintuitive interface gives me nightmares.

I did that too, but for quake 4, its really really hard, to get used to
it ofcourse, i tried so hard, the controls are just crazy...The only
thing i enjoyed that it had many cooler features, the common one is
rendering the map while you are in the editor, really cool...
