I figure that I will be away for almost 4 days on this run. That should be ample time for everyone to decide if its doable or not.

The way I see it, those that think it a bad idea, simply won't participate. Those that do, but have reservations about posting it publicly, well we can just post it via the Pm's.

I figure, anyone who participates can post here, and the rest of us can shoot them a message with the link.

Anyway, while I am away you will need to decide on "What to say" and "If you wanna say it"

Carry on gents.

(please post if you are a yes vote)

/me voted "1" also, but.. I couldn't say so until someone else had posted.

Silly Snarkpit won't allow double posting. (or its not supposed to)

As for shattering any illusions, I think its a disillusion to think that it can be done. :heee:

Seriously, I am still giggling.

As far as accents go, I have heard perhaps a couple dozen distinct ones but the only one I like, is northern New England. The accent from a person from Maine is great. The accent from Cajun Louisiana is a close second.

Georgia and Kentucky are about the worse, followed closely by Tennessee and Arkansas. Try living here most of your life and hating listening to the locals.
I do however find the British accents most humorous.

Gwilly, I can't wait to hear your accent. Northerners sound odd.

I voted 1 because I like accents and languages.

Not only should we have a sentence to be pronounced in english, but it should be translated into the users native langage(s) too.

  • peruvians were Incas
  • I know enough about indo-european languages to tell if someone is translating the sentence.
  • Missouri folk do NOT suck mule dung. We eat it with a knife and fork like EVERYONE else.

I gave a good vote for 1 because umm, audio. Good stuff. I'll have to figure out how to strip audio from video since the only mic I have is in my camera. Decent enough quality, at least for this.

I'd go with 1 too. The portrayal of the British on foreign TV is definitely skewed and does not give a good depiction of the British accent. The one you hear on TV is always posh sounding (e.g Neela on ER, has to put on a posh accent when she's really from Nottingham which has a very similar accent to myself, and most probably Gwil, since he's from the same county as me).

I get the distinct impression, that this is gonna be fun as hell.

Seriously though, I hate impressions that seem to be accepted at face value. For instance:

I live in Arkansas, I wasn't born here but that seems to make no difference. Since I live here I must know Clinton personally and have sex with my sister at every opportunity. Since I live in Arkansas I must be poorly educated (well compared to everyone here, that seems true enough) and since I live in Arkansas, I must have a job thats barely above poverty. Since I live in Arkansas, I actually have no job, I live off of welfare and lie about my unemployment, all the while working for cash.

Anyway.. I look forward to having my illusions about British speech mannerisms destroyed.

Scottish is technically an "uncultured savage" accent, is it not? I'm sure we can get a sentence for you -

"oi laddie ge ta the shop and ge me' som irn bru, or arll chib ye in tha pus"

Yeah. We just need to agree on a sentence. Start Suggesting.

"You and I must make a map. Just be sure to use bigger brushwork. I will include more props in my iteration."

That uses a lot of sounds, but its BORING....

Maybe we ought to use an intro sentence "Hello my name is _____ I am from _____." then we can have another sentnce that uses lots of sounds.

I don't care what else we say after that, so someone decide and I'll do it.

Actually you can, but the quality is really bad. Earbuds work better than most. Speak into the left earbud. The volume will probably be low, so you may need to increase it in post-processing. The physics of it is reversible.

ofcourse it works, you apply the same principle but in reverse order. mic: sound>membrane>electric pulses. headphones: electric pulses>membrane>sound. no reason why you coudnt reverse it.

I was thinking along the same lines:

"Hello, my name is (put in as much name as you feel comfortable saying). My home is, (put in as much origin as you feel comfortable saying). I am (age) years old. I began mapping with (which editor) on or about (date). After learning the basics I moved on to (any other editors). I discovered Snarkpit (approximate date) and liked it so much I decided to stay. My other hobbies include (post anything that catches your fancy). I have (wife, children, siblings)

Anyway, this is how I envisioned it. Something like a "Verbal Profile"
Opinions????

DISCLAIMER: PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE TRY TO KEEP YOUR ZIPS TO ONE MEG OR LESS. I discovered very quickly that MP3 is much smaller than wave files. Thanx for cooperating.

After almost 6 attempts I discovered that it is very difficult to record a satisfactory rendition of my voice. I did finally succeed, but I discovered that I do not like my voice very much in recording.

However, This recording is acceptable to me. It more/less sounds like myself. The only thing is, the hesitancy of my speech. Recording what I wrote was more difficult than I imagined it would be because the graphs were distracting me. I watched them bounce and bob to my voice. I suggest you do not watch the monitor if you want to succeed in less than 6 tries.

This is what I said:

Hello, my name is Jon Edward Rickenbacker Jr. My home is, Van Buren, A rural community in Arkansas I am 43 years old. I began mapping with the Build Editor on or about 1997. The editor was for the Duke Nukem 3d game. I made about 1/2 a dozen Deathmatch maps and played them with my old Packard Bell sx33 pc and a 14.4 modem. After learning the basics I moved on to Half-Life and WorldCraft 2.1. and eventually made and released 9 maps. I discovered Snarkpit in its infancy. The site was still all white with blue trim and did mostly reviews for the game. I liked it so much I decided to stay. My other hobbies include Mostly reading and playing games with my grandson Devon. My wife Brenda and I have been married almost 25 years and together we have two sons Jon III and Jarrod.
