Right now, work is being done on Tenebrae 2 for Q2 and a standalone version of Tenebrae.

It's good, but everything looks massively "over-bumped" and shiny.
Hang on....that's just like Doom3 then!

I'm with Gollum and Adam here - overuse of shiny shadery stuff makes things look too plasticy, HL2 with its realistic look is far nicer to me.
A game that looks really cool IMO is "Breakdown", on the xbox. It might also be a PC game but I just saw a rolling video of it on an xbox dvd and it looks really quite nice. The thing that made it stand out to me was the hand to hand combat, which for once wasn't horrendous "slap slap slap" but involved realistic punch and kick combos, that see the camera swinging about and the enemies reacting realistically.

considering the age of the engine, i think it is astounding none the less..
i agree it looks too shiny, and plasticy tho, but only because we now have seen so much better..
i am betting none of you remember the way you felt the first time you loaded duke3d either ... none of us would quantify it today as anything special, but back then it was incredable..
my question is this, can the not achieve the same looks without the shiney? i mean, it would still look good with a dull finish IMO..

Something needs to be done about these mutant squids going nuts with the ink where the shadows are.

Unfortunately the Half-Life code will probably never be released because of all the hacks and cheats and such. Which sucks, really.

Er, I thought the HL2 engine was based of Deus Ex 2 or something...

well, the textures do look plasticy like you guys said but the over all design looks pretty sweet in some spots.
I'll have to do a techy style texture set some time, would be a lot of fun  .

Poor Poor Edge Damodred...
Your knowledge of HL2 engine is poor, HL2 is HL1 that has been fiddled with, I know that for a fact from an official Bloodlines mapper.
(For those who don't know, Bloodlines is a HL2 engine game coming out next year sometime about Vampires and other stuff).

I don't think that's very likely Myrk. I'm sure VALVe wouldn't have spent 5 years revamping the same old engine. And from everything official I've heard, the Source engine is completely original. It would help if someone can find some true, valve released info about this...

The idea engine for HL2 would be to make the HL1 engine be able to handle huge polycounts and revamp the shadows, and add a lot of dynamic-light type effects.

If alot of the old content can be ported over so easily (supposedly), I imagine Source would be very similar to HL1. And they're still keeping the "brush" system and such from what I can see, so it's a strong possibility.

I thought there were very strong limits to what an exclusively BSP based engine could do. Meh

Not only do I know for a fact that HL2 is HL1 engine revampped, you can tell from everything thats been done and happened.
Some of the screenshots show lighting errors identical to those in HL1, the increase in models rather than brushes. These are all given Lod models so that the engine does less over distance.
Also the compatibility issues of using the same file formats and compile tools to compile maps, the need for increased specs to run it.
The simplicity of the structures in the game, all made to look complex because of bump mapped surfaces, just like the models.
Need I go on?
Look at Tenebrae or whatever, If you can do that to the Q1 engine, then thats what HL2 is. Some of the tenebrae pictures look like Doom 3! And the coders for HL/HL2 are professional so they work out ways to make better looking environments, the inclusion of a multi lighting environment of prerendered and real time lighting also contributes to the faster speeds compared to Doom 3.
According to the mapper I spoke with, HL2 is pretty much HL1 with 12 dll files added to it... the dll files must be pretty mass.

"Not only do I know for a fact that HL2 is HL1 engine revampped.."
It's called evolution. They're just building on and learning from the successes and limitations of previous technology - keeping things that worked, expanding or changing things that needed to be improved, adding new features..etc. The way you state it, I visualize this 5 year old file, 'the original halflife code'..and there is Valve, cutting and pasting from it - stapling new pieces of code on top of it, trying to get it to work...lol.
Of course they're not going to reinvent the wheel if they don't have to. If the BSP format, and using more LOD meshes works best within the Source environment - why not use it? What does it matter, anyway, if the result is a more versatile, dynamic, moddable, engine?
