Hello everyone, its been a while since you heard from me.

I just wanted to pop by and tell you guys that im about to start a three year long education today about development of computer games with a focus on graphics.

It was actually very difficult to make it here. They where very tough in their selection. One had to make a real diverse portfolio aswell as doing graphics for a computer game, as a test in just a couple of hours. It is said that this particular education if one of the most wanted in Sweden, and the most difficult to get qualified to.

A few of my friends from the www.leveldesign.nu community (swedish mapping community) tried to make it, but they didnt, and for that im quite sad. However two of them did and im very happy to be able to study with them.

I have moved to a small community called Sk?vde with about 90 000 people to study. Its about one and a half hour away from my home, Gothenburg.
Im living in a 16 floor tall building called "the skyskraper", because its the tallest building around. It was finnished this year and im among the first students to live here. There have been several parties going on every day since I moved in last week. The internet connection that im provided with by enthusiasts at the university is insane. I get 100mbit up and downstream for a mere 30$ A YEAR! No im not kidding, and no i didnt mix the numbers. Im barely paying anything for the insane amount of bandwidth im being provided with.

Ive taken a quick peek on the courses that im going to study in the following months, and i must say im very anxious to begin. The first course is called "Computer game analysis" and the litterature list is awesome.
I could read theese boks just for fun!

The indroduction ceremony, or whatever its called, is in fact starting in about one hour, so im quite nervous but also very excited of course =).

Now you must think that i love to brag about how good my situation is at the moment. But that not really the case... Im just to grateful and happy to have this opportunity and i cannot help that i have to share this with you guys.

By the way... Since im very intrested in politics and stuff i have to ask you guys how much education of higher levels cost in the country where you live?
Here in sweden, its free for swedes. However students from other countries who come here to study have to pay for their education, which SUCKS.

CONGRATS!

My college is very cheap right now and its about $200USD for 1 credit hour. some classes are cheaper. The school I wanted to go to for linguistics costs almost $30,000usd a year. ouch. That like ten trillion Swedish Kronor. lol jk.
I tried sniffing coke, but the ice cubes kept getting stuck in my nose.

Yours is one of the better maps I have been associated with. Try to find a weekend or 10 to polish it off.

Good luck. School has always been a priority for me as far as this sites members go.

Congratulations, sounds like youll be having an awesome time.

My degree (5 years, engineering/computer science) costs about AU$35000, but Australian citizens get a free loan from the government which I dont have to pay back until I'm earning decent money (then its paid via increased income tax). My university is starting a game design course next year I think, but I doubt it will be as good as you could get in Sweden. The internet access is pretty bad here, extremely fast but you only get something like 75mb per semester, after which its extremely expensive.

Anyway, good luck, and dont forget us at the Pit

I find it funny that you're shocked of that even though MisterBister
has the same situation in his country. The education is payed by the
goverment to give everyone equal opportunity to get higher level of
education(taxes are a bit high though, but that's life in scandinavian
welfare state). For the rest you have to pay yourself(books, food,
lodging, running costs, living, etc.).

MisterBister, that's great news! Congratulations, I hope you make the most of your next 3 years!

As for the cost of education here... the college I go to costs about $46,000 USD a year. That's about 327,591.59 Kronor, 35,593.50 Euros, or 24,242.08 Pounds. It's about the average cost for the small liberal arts schools where I'm from. If you need financial aid you can apply for varying amounts. They give out a few scholarships a year. All in all, its extremely expensive, and every year many people in the United States can't end up going to their dream school (even after they're accepted) because it's too expensive. Then again, I'm only talking about private colleges and universities, and not state-run ones (which are really cheap if you're from the same state).

Congrats, MisterBister!

Over here, I'm not sure what universities cost but my computer science education costs about 6.000 euro, exclusive books and stuff (just checking, it seems my education is called an 'university of applied science').
A friend of mine in Germany got a game education too, and he's paying 20.000 for it. Which sounds like an awfull lot to me...

Good job, and good luck. Post screens. I mean, take pictures.

Years ago, before I could take advantage of it, college in California was free for residents. Then it was community colleges were free for residents. Now I have to pay my own way, regardless of where I live. Local private colleges can be anywhere from $2,000 (California Polytechnic University) a semester, to $30,000(University of Southern Cali.). But I'm probably going to end up to to college in Chicago, the price of which I don't know.

Sweden is just a cool country. I couldn't even think of anyplace offering a similar education where I live. Too conservative I guess.

University in Vienna was free until a few years ago. Now it's 500 euros/semester.

Good luck, Bister, have fun and try to smuggle out some level design knowledge for us

I'd be interested in what you put in your portfolio. Just because I'm a nosy person by nature.

Congrats MisterBister.

I live a small town called Varnhem about 20 km away from Sk?vde, and I also have a friend that just started studying the same thing as you (at least I think so, it was about computer games anyway  ).

I myself has just started studying Business Administration at J?nk?ping International Business School (in Sweden). Seems pretty nice so far, and I really like that there are many international students here.

Good luck MisterBister, and everyone else that has just started studying at a new school/university!!
