Waking Life

A very, very intersting experiment. It's basically a young guy, probably a philosophy student wandering around in dream-like episodes in which all kinds of weird people explain to him the meaning of life. Then he more and more realizes that in a way he just talked to himself but it's not really clear what's happening.

I'm not sure about the mixture of real-life shots and animation. It looks very much like a photoshop filter at times and I don't see it adding too much the plot. But it's definitely impressive.
Why snark works.

Watched Fearless last night, and I really enjoyed it. Its a rather familiar style of role for Jet Li, but I'd say it was probably his best acting performance that I've come across. The fights were, as you'd expect from Jet Li, rather ridiculous and exaggerated, but impressive nonetheless. I preferred Hero on the whole, but Fearless is certainly one of the best martial arts movies I've seen.

And tonight I watched Ultraviolet, which is a whole lot harder to recommend. Lets face it, nobody watching this film was really gonna be expecting a masterpiece, but I hoped for something a little better than what I got. One or two fairly decent ideas (the gravity generator chase scene, for example, or the weapon/ammo generators on the wrists) get your hopes up, but the execution is just all round bad. The CG is pretty rubbish, leading to most action scenes or city-views looking cheap TV show fodder. They've also flat-out stolen the whole gun-kata thing from Equilibrium - was this some sort of spiritual successor that just didn't cut it? Also, why the hell did she keep changing her hair/outfit? On perhaps one or two occasions she did it to lose people, but she did it several times just for the hell of it. Not to say I wouldn't if I had a device to do so, but still, it just felt so cheesy...

Kurt Wimmer wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultra Violet. I remember warning people it was complete garbage.

About 20 minutes into the movie I was fine, because the chase scene through the city was enjoyable with the anti-gravity stuff ... but then it had to focus on the kid and racism. Why couldn't it stay a chase movie?

(Apparently Wimmer also wrote The Recruit, no wonder that movie blew ass)

I think the hair/outfit changing colors depended on her "mood". That was my guess, I could be giving Wimmer too much credit though.

I loved Fearless when I saw in theaters, after watching it again on DVD, I noticed a lot of the dialog was changed through subtitles, especially at the end of the movie. I also noticed that during the actor playing Tanaka had a lot of his lines voiced over. It's really noticeable during the conversation he has with Yuanjia while they have tea.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Equilibrium was great.

Ultraviolet was a godawful piece of crap. The only reason I watched it all the way through was that I was hoping, through some miracle, there would be something good or redeeming eventually. Sadly not.

I got my sister the Watchmen graphic novel for Christmas. She got me Optimus Prime. We rock.

Watched the South Park episode, "Make Love, Not Warcraft".... again. The show has been tanking hardcore the last couple years, but this episode is a new classic.

I was kind of unimpressed with Pirates of the Caribbean 2, I loved the visuals and feel of the movie, but the plot was kind of "ify"... decent at least, too much emphasis on special effects.

Superman Returns almost put me to sleep, they could have done something with Lex Luther or come up with a better plot for him.

Have to agree on "Equilibrium", great movie. Ultraviolet was god awful much like the two Resident Evil movies, IMO the last good she was in was "Fifth Element".

Agreed Jinx.

I loved Equilibrium, thought it was great. Watching Ultra Violet I couldn't believe the same guy had done both. It was grade A trash, the fight sequences weren't even cool, let alone believable. The excessive use of green screen was a really bad idea, particularly with the half-assed way it was executed.

Also saw Borat, was thoroughly disturbed, particularly by the nude bit in the hotel, but had a good laugh none the less.

Saw Bond again, enjoyed much it more the second time once I lowered my expectations significantly. Still can't understand the 95%, best Bond ever, reviews. At most it was a high 70's, low 80's movie.

Tristram Shandy: A c**k and Bull Story was pretty good, some quality British comedy. It shifts between the film and the filming of the film.

Behind enemy lines. I thought it was good as an action movie, as long as you don't try to analyze it too much.
For instance, we have half the serb army shooting assault rifles, 50cals, 30mm autocannons, RPG-7s, handguns, and muzzle launched grenades at ONE tired pilot, less than 400 meters away, trying to run UP HILL without any cover. And though these guys throw the entire military budget of Albania at this one pilot, they somehow manage to miss each and every shot and, what's more, the pilot doesn't even get a single scratch as if he somehow managed to enter the matrix and out-maneuver all the shrapnel.

Heck I saw that a few months ago. It's literally unbelieveable some of the situations that guy survived. The witty tricks that he used to fool the enemy where quite clever but all of the munitions and bullets he avoided was kinda ridiculous. I sometimes wonder why they don't try to make these films alot more believable. I mean, a few close calls here and there, but nothing on a stupid scale like on most action films.

Action movies arent supposed to be beleivable, theyre supposed to be about freaking explosions. The longer the guy lives, the more explosions, and the better the movie. Thats why I liked it, completely ridiculous and over the top explosions and awesome.

I think that some funding came from the Air Force or Navy for that movie. (There were ads for the movie linked with both factions of the military when it was in theaters) it also appears that it's ... very loosely ... based on a real guy being shot down in Bosnia. (Who filed a lawsuit against Fox for portraying him as profane and insubordinate.)

On the other hand the main character would look better if he managed to out-smart a clever enemy rather than outsmarting a dumb one.

Hilariously full of those one liners I love so much. Also Lewis Black was fantastic. I cannot recall ever seeing him in a movie before, but he was a character after my own heart. He said, so much of how I view life.

I've watched all five American Pie movies. Had only seen parts of the first one before, so I thought I'd go through them all. Here are some brief thoughts (do contain some minor spoilers):

American Pie:
Liked this one, was funny and all. Characters were funny, and the story was good, interesting all the way through.
7.5/10 Snarks for this one.

American Pie 2:
This one was also quite funny, although not as good as the first one. Wasn't as fun when they weren't in high school. Still definitely worth a watch.
7/10 Snarks.

American Wedding (part 3):
I kind of missed Jim's third friend, can't remember his name. Also, the characters started to feel a bit old here, and weren't as funny. Still, a few good moments, and worth a watch after having seen the first two movies.
6/10 Snarks.

American Pie: Band Camp (part 4):
Didn't like this one. The main character in this one, Matt Stifler, felt like a boring copy of his brother. I think this one is the worst one of the entire series.
4/10 Snarks.

American Pie: The Naked Mile (part 5):
A bit better than part 4, with better characters, and a more interesting main character. Most of the penis and virginity jokes felt a bit old though. Still, an ok flick. I suppose it's worth a watch if you've seen all the other movies.
5/10 Snarks.
What the Snarkpitters listen to!

There's a part 5?

I saw Bable yesterday. Good film-making although I didn't understand the weak connection of the 3 stories. Which is probably because half of the movie had yellow, 30% additive transparency subtitles that were often hidden on a bright background. I hate that.
Why snark works.

"Dazed and Confused". I have no idea how the title relates to the film but it was about teenagers, that's for sure.

Look up the definition of "teens"

The best things in life, aren't things.
