So yeah, I'm sure most of you know about FF by now, and they've finally set a release date. I'm just doing my part to tell everyone I know.

Now that's what I call tough competition. FF and TF2, both released the same day. Both looking excellent, both more similar than I would have ever imagined 2 years ago.

Can't wait

As long as I'm forced to buy games that I don't want, or already own, even if I can "gift them to a friend", I won't be playing any tf2.

FF ftw.

It does seem a bit daft to force you to get HL2 and EP1 as part of the bundle, but come on Fishy, it's $52 including tax! Just over ?25 for 3 brand new games? That's a ridiculously good deal. It seems to suggest you'll be able to buy the games individually once they're released though, as they have individual prices of $30 each when it shows you the components of the combo deal.

I really feel for FF, as this is a horrible piece of timing. Had they preempted TF2 by a month they would have lured in loads of people eager to get back into TF before TF2 hit, but as it stands now they're gonna be overlooked by the vast majority.

I don't want to start any evil conspiracy theories, but I wonder if this was intended by Valve? FF announces a September release day - TF2 gets released in September by Valve.

It would have been pretty embarrassing for Valve, to compete with a product of almost identical (or, in terms of map-work, perhaps even superior) content and gameplay, created entirely by the community and released for no charge (just like TF, I'm realizing while I type this). So at least the "Fortress" gameplay isn't old news by the time the orange box comes out.

Kudos for Valve, though, for not shutting FF down (like many other companies would have probably done).

The way I see it, competition causes both the FF team and Valve to push themselves to make their respective products even better. I think they're distinct games based on the same basic design and rule set, but intended to appeal to somewhat different audiences. FF is what the more hardcore players will gravitate to, because that's who built it and who they built it for. TF2 will be on both PC and Xbox 360, so it was created with appealing to a broader audience in mind, more "pick up and play".

I'll be playing both, they both look awesome.

Indeed, FF and TF2 have been competing alot, and it's forced both games to get better. The dev team is in constant communication with Valve about it. I personally feel like the same release date might have been intentional, but the team is saying it's coincidence.

Personally I think FF is the better game in terms of serious gameplay. If you want to get together and seriously play, FF is the game. I've been on the beta team for awhile, and it gets REALLY intense. TF2 looks far more geared towards casual gamers. For that reason, I'm sure it'll be played more, but I think the hardcore players will play FF, and it'll outlast TF2.

I'll probably snag FF first, due to the fact it's a mod and easily accessible (that is unless their server blows up or something on release day.) I'll still probably wind up buy TF2, just for the sake of trying it out and comparing it to the original TF. Unfortunately, I really have no idea as to which one is going to be better

And I've just noticed, Sept 17 is a Monday, which means I probably won't be trying anything out until Friday of that week :/

What in the world?

You haven't played TF2 so how the hell do you know how it plays. I don't have to even download FF to know it'll be full of that triple conc jump cap the flag in 7 sec on 2fort garbage that, coupled with cookable grenade spam, ruined TFC. I don't see how anyone who 'seriously' played TFC on release and immediately after who watched the game degenerate into crap because of the very 'features' FF is trumpeting could possibly look forward to it. Hell, FF is even reintroducing bunnyhopping and various Quake trickjumps, which is mind boggling and speaks directly to their understanding of good game design and balance (ie: they have none).

Aaaalright, settle down son. I'm sure from your experience with FF you know EXACTLY how it plays. And from your active involvement in the community, you totally know all about how the devs were changing the game and just decided to ignore it for this post.

Dude... shut the f**k up. a)yes, there is bunnyhopping, it's capped. There are certain things built into the game to make it fun. b)no, there won't be any of that grab the flag in 7 seconds s**t, because guess what: THEY BALANCED THE GAME. The game's been essentialy finished for over a month, we've just been playtesting 24/7 to get the balance right. The guys playtesting were some of the best TFC players, and in FF they can be stopped.

So please, don't say dick about stuff you have no idea about. On the other hand, we'll all be happy not to have to play with you.

laugh and a half, you were spouting off on TF2 as if you know how it will play, and yet when I comment on a game that's TFC reskinned and rebalanced for 'competitive play' i get personal attacks. Need I requote what you posted that I was responding to? Oh and somehow I think I'm either your age or older so shove that whole talking down to me up your ass.

Yes yes, made concs less powerful, decreased grenade explosion ranges, and probably other tiny nuances I'm not privy to. So what. Servers will still run with match rules about no OvO, no midfield fighting, class restrictions, and other lame crap. Guess what, if that happens that means your game isn't balanced. As long as offhand grenades are in the game they will still be the overwhelmingly dominant way of killing people, which again, leads to spam and yawn-inducing grenadefests where your main weapon no longer matters. Yet FF people/fans have taken every opportunity to bash TF2 for removing the very grenades which sucked the fun out of TFC.

Bunnyhopping. In a game where class speed is one of the balancing factors. That makes real sense. Congratulations, you have recoded a 10 year old physics glitch into an engine that supposedly has real simulated physics.

And finally concjumping. Don't even feed me that line where I have to 'play it myself' in order to see if they fixed them. The only fixing would be to remove their use as a grenade jump, which I am certain did not happen.

<DIV class=quote>
<DIV class=quotetitle>? quote:</DIV>
<DIV class=quotetext>So please, don't say dick about stuff you have no idea about. On the other hand, we'll all be happy not to have to play with you.</DIV></DIV>

From what I hear you'll be happily playing with nearly nobody when TF2 is released.
My intent wasn't to start a huge slapfight, but you know me. I guess my problem with FF is that I really really loved TFC, was in a clan in some early league I no longer remember, and was really f**king good at it. But then, slowly but surely the game degenerated into pure s**t, as most kills came from primed grenades and spam, and offense became nothing but a few medics concing their way through the map. And to add insult to injury servers started enforcing those damn match rules in pubs, making the game even less worth playing. Match rules which, frankly, are a joke in every sense of the word, as even in competitive play they were unnecessary. And yet here we are, these same 'progamers' who ruined TFC decide that they are going to bring the 'real' TFC experience to the masses, fully preloaded with their bulls**t, endlessly bashing TF2 at every chance because their precious primed spam and concs were finally, mercifully, removed. So maybe if you weren't taking shots at it I wouldn't have posted.

And yes, I know a tiny bit about FF because I did look into it for potentially mapping for it (since there's pretty much nothing for Source out there), but once I realised that the mod was featuring the very same playstyles, tactics, design, and behavior that ruined TFC I said nuts to that.

PS: My dig about you knowing about playing FF was to show that if you're telling me not to talk about TF2, then what makes you think you can talk about FF? Sorry if you didn't understand that complex point.

(that last line was sarcasm, please don't write an essay again)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYways...

Spectacular start, 1500 players on right now, last night FF was #6 most played Steam game. Hopefully it'll bump up a bit when the weekend rolls around.

Hmm, apparently I mistook you for somebody who was a regular at the Snarkpit. Won't happen again I assure you. Sorry if experience and general knowledge is 'bulls**t' to you. Guess what, I played TFC extensively, FF is a source recreation plus progamer tweaks, I somehow think I have far more knowledge of FF's gameplay than you do of TF2's gameplay.

I guess I shouldn't have assumed you actually played TFC when it was good, since if your profile is to be believed you were 9 years old when TFC was released. So while you were working on your cursive handwriting I was in a clan actually playing the game before it turned to garbage through the very things FF is trumpeting over TF2... unless you actually were playing TFC and was the king of the lunchtable...

Let me make this even clearer for you: TFC core is fun, it has serious issues however which ruined it. FF is TFC's core, without changing the serious issues and instead embracing them.

As of 5:15pm EST, props to barely beating Garry's Mod on the first friday of your mod's release, I'm sure the player population will skyrocket once Monday rolls around.

You're more oldskool than us, alright. Happy? Can you stop hulling every single post of yours in a s**t cloud now?

______

If you cut the TFC melancholy, FF is still an outstanding mod. From what I played so far, I like the changes they did, although this is indeed TFC2 and not TF2 (keeping - and admittedly polishing - every detail of TFC). I have no problem with that. It's good at what it tries to be.

I agree with the grenade spam, though. I'm quite looking forward to TF2's nade-free gameplay, although I'm afraid that's just the tip of a huge iceberg of features cut for potentially confusing players who refuse to do any form of tutorial.

I gave it a try. I only played a few games but it got crazy. Good fun. It's badly in need of a patch though. I also noticed a few over lapping displacements. Weapons seem a little unbalance and i don't understand why some classes need two shot guns. Sniping will be next to impossible for this game. I'd like to see how it stacks up to tf2.

<span style="color: white;">I've found FF much more fun than TFC in the past. So I take it as a success. As for the grenade spamming, I haven't really suffered from that since most of the maps are quite sizeable(minus the bases). I think I've found another substitute until PVK II gets an update or Empires 1.08 comes out... Dystopia is getting boring because of Baron von Lez's constant GL spam that simply makes me want to choke the guy personally...

Personally, I have enjoyed FF so far. There's a respawn bug that happens sometimes after you die at an angle, you respawn with that same angle, as if you placed your info_player_start in hammer at an angle. All you have to do is die again strait-up, and that should fix it. I've only found that it occurs when you're lagging really badly (which I get a lot with this university connection).

Beyond that though, I think that this mod is really well constructed and the same tactics that made TFC so popular are continuing to propel FF. This is truly a community mod, and I appreciate that. They tried to stay as true to the original while at the same time not trying to be a complete carbon-copy. I think they did an excellent job. (Especially with the level design!)

Also, in one hour TF2 beta will be released, so since I already installed it, I'll be playing some of that later today! I can't wait!

Anyone else having steam trouble? I see no where where it says plat TF2 beta. I tried checking the forums, but they're down or having trouble or something. I guess I'll check back tomorrow. I imagine the forums are getting overloaded or the steam network cant process all the TF2 beta requests or something.

They said (two hours ago) that they're having trouble with the Linux server distributable, the Win32 is ready and if they can't get the Linux distribution working in the next couple hours (around now) that they'd just release the Win32 server and the Linux one when they figured out the issue.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I just had a wee shot of it in the office, and it seems pretty damn awesome. Looking forward to my lunch break

Great game, didn't last long though, now there are cheaters on every single server using speedhack and advertising/encouraging other players to get the hacks as well.

s**t sucks.

The "speed-hacks" should be gone in a few days.

I hope the crashing when ever I shoot an engineer with AC as HWGuy is gone too(I was about to report it, but then I was intelligent enough to do a search and it had been reported already with a huge amount of similar crashes).

I stopped playing because of being on the desktop more often than in the game(got occasional crashing with other classes too, but they were reported as well).
