and you need that to beable to play a game of chess with some one through steam aswell but lots of people on the staeam forums just don't realise that 1GHz is just a f**king insanely high requirement to play a game of chess never mind a game that only requires a 166+ to play with out this crappy srog called steam.
They just say well you should upgrade cos 1GHz processors have been out since 2000.
[edit]
Oh and DoD retail only needs a 500Mhz and that uses steam but thats still bloody high to say that the mod version only needs what hl needs

Gah, this thing is sounding like my school's "Rensselaer Plan". Basically, all policies by administration are part of the "Rensselaer Plan" and involve things like building fancy buildings for hi tech stuff, not building buildings they said they would build for EMAC department, general tuition hikes for undergrads, huge tuition hikes for grads and elimination of part time grad student prices. What is it for? All chasing some weird ideal that's entirely too damn corporate, especially for a university. A veritable s**tload of freshmen were admitted for this year, and one dorm has become almost entirely makeshift triples for rooms instead of doubles simply because the administration felt they needed the money.
I guess this is kinda hitting a tangent here, the intent of this post isn't to exposes RPI President Shirley Ann Jackson for the ignoramus that she is, but to provide another example of where some people are just so certain that they created such an incredible new system that they fail to see all the customers/students that they're pissing off.

what the f**k, 1ghz?! HL was out like a year before 1ghz processors ffs. you only need maybe a p2 to run it decently, that's what I had until just this spring. this is a big 'fuck you' to the community.

Steam really just screams "security risk" and "spyware" to me. Of course you'll never really know the truth if there's spyware...
And as for the security risk; I already don't like the idea of downloading anything at anytime. If these content servers ever get corrupted or hacked, what's to stop some hacker or something from installing hundred's of worms? Best of all, I won't even have control over what happens. Woohoo.
But, obviously, if Steam works out, the benefits will be pretty substantial to Valve. I guess they're ready to take that risk.

Death to steam!
this all smacks of being in control of data and money, this sucks. thanks valve, thanks a lot - nice way to pay back the community after they made half-life into the TRUE global phenomenon it became, with CS, DoD, AHL etc...

This is complete crap, really it is. I don't like this at all. I have more than enough to run Steam(ing pile of dog s**t). Having to run it in the background is total crap. Also they're leaving a huge lot of the community in the dust by requiring a BB connection.
They're trying to be Battle.net but are completely f**king it up, royally.

Pretty stiff requirements i'll say. This whole thing with steam has really put quite a few people off. I'll go along for the ride as I really want to play this game in MP.

Hmm, seems I'm gonna either have to get the X-Box port of HL2 or wait for the PS3 or N5 ports a few years down the road to have a Steam-free HL experience.

STEAM out WED.
CS1.6 Out SEPT 30 or there abouts, at that time CS1.5 will no longer function as well as any other valve game outside Steam.
Steam will be needed to play any Valve game in a couple weeks. Get ready for the conversion..

I think Valve are forgetting than many people (read MOST of the UK!) don't have access to broadband et al, which kind of renders Steam pretty damn useless.
What was wrong with the old system?

One thing to look forward to with the new Steam is having to start fresh with your config. So let's say you use custom weapons, models, sprays, fonts...whatever, when ya play online...ya gotta get that all new.
I played last nite on a Steam server, and until someone said you had to transfer your player models, your maps, your config, everyting...over to the Steam folder, then I was playing at dead default...even my screen size and mouse sensitivity had to be reset.
Still...it played ok. There wasn't any lag. Only real bitch I had was while downloading a map, there was no status bar which showed download progress, so I didn't know if the server had crashed. Also, pressing ESC didn't do anything either...so I waited and luckily the server didn't crash.
I agree with Orph tho. No sense bitching about this new program because there's nothing we can do. It's what Valve wants to do for the community...and until they get it perfected, we have to suffer along with it if we want to play any Valve game.

Surely launching Steam at the same time as HL2 would have made a whole bunch more sense though?
I don't personally like it cos it was yet another thing for me to d/l (sure, only 500k but thats still a good five minutes of waiting at least). And to make matters worse, when I installed it, it had to 'update' which took another 30mins to do - and i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it's going to want to 'update' more or less every time I connect to the internet.
Regarding the latest patches and whatnot - does Steam support resumable downloads? I hope so, as i'm more or less scuppered otherwise

Actually, this seems like a sensible thing to do..allowing Steam enough time to work out its kinks, before the release of HL2.

Steam does not resume downloads, it's very, VERY, 56k unfriendly.... it's coming to the days when companies assume that US is the only country in the world, ignoring other countries which have 56k still.
Look at SWG, not one UK server!

Quake 3 is a massivly fast and an extremely efficient engine. fact.
As an avid programer, and as a human-oid, steam has huge problems that need to be resolved. Its lag being the main thing and the huge hdd space it cunsumes - currently 5 gigs for me.
Hmm, half life got so so far because of valve, apart from consuming every decent mod under the sun ( excluding ns ), it listened to its community, and acted. Jeeze, I just so hope that value wont go down the route that microsoft went --- oh f**k no. Quake would be linux.
Looks like q3 then :-p , I always did like carmack...

Seriously, it doesn't resume dl's? God, how messed up are those valve folks. There's not ONE good reason for a distribution system such as Steam to not resume dl's. That, to me, can be one of the major advantages of the system; you can get dl'ing done whenever you want to, you don't have to block out time for a full dl.

Here's the thing, i have small broadband AKA. lite speed cable, i get a max dl of 15k, it took me 1 hour and 30 mins to dl cs1.6 off of steam, it is 400mb...it took me 2 and a half hours to dl NS which is like 200, which means that the steam servers are incredibly fast, but at the moment that only applies to dling the game not playing it, they are incredibly laggy [atleast for me and my friend] to play on...hopefully that will change.

well, as it's implied, everything will be on Steam  I see the benefits of this...but I also don't like having my more developer oriented choices taken away from me.

I have just read that Steam will not let you use custon models because it reads out of the pack file and the pak file alone.
Although i am not to sure on how accurate this is.

I would think that steam looks for an external file, then will result to the pak file - meaning you could have some custom content.

Wll if it reads out of the .pak then all you do is un pack it, replace the models then repack it.
