I guess you could say the same about average, non-computer literate guys, it just so happens that there are MORE computer literate guys than there are girls.

Well they're definitely not into 3d shooters. The only girl I know who tried half-life stopped the game after the attack of the first head-crab. She says it scared the s**t out of her.... she should have sticked to spider solitaire...

I think the only word I'd change is "belligerent." That just doesn't do justice to the many other types of drunks, notably the ones that have already passed out.

Girls are able to be good at computers, they just don't find them of interest as much as us guys do.
My girlfriend is quite good at computers, it's rather embarrassing when she pwns me in The Specialists.

It's stupid to say that girls aren't able to use computers as well as guys, but you can't argue with the idea that the average girls isn't as good with PCs as the average guy...
I know a couple of people who will disagree with any man vs women stereotype to the last, but in my view this is just crazy. I'm doing an engineering degree, and there are 2 girls on my course - the department by it's own admission slightly favours girls during the application process to try and get more in. I think it's fair to say 'in general, girls aren't as interested in doing an engineering degree as boys', but a couple of people I know would never let that go, they would keep syaing 'girls can be engineers just as good', totally ignoring what I'm actually saying.
To ignore the facts on the differences between men and women is just as bad as thinking the stereotypes apply to all.

stereotyping aside guys, it is a fact, that it is harder to motivate the female sex to computers, but i have noticed that the few whom do partake in it, excel beyond their counterparts in most cases. females tend to have more stick-toitiveness then males do.. i do not believe a female should ever be shown preferential treatment, JUST to motivate them, but more so allow the current females to coax others in instead. any system that shows preference to a minority group, is cheating everyone else in the group who worked hard to get where they are. i would rather not turn this into a debate, but i have seen this in workplaces, and strongly disagree with any system that practices this method. no one will ever work as hard at something GIVEN to them as they would if they EARNED it.

Preferential treatment in being a bit less tight with the application requirements at an engineering with women has some benefits - almost every engineering school has a bit of a ratio problem that makes out of class activities that much more dull.

I disagree with it to Orph. I don't see why people don't just leave it - if a group of people generally aren't as interested in something, then why push them into it? We don't have initiatives encouraging boys to do ballet or be more interested in ponies. I don't understand why people aren't happy to accept their differences in this case.

i know quite a few girls who are into computers, and play games 24/7 lol. but generally, girls think of computers as a communication and word processing tool.

I don't think in anyway it's pushing a group of people that don't want to do something into doing something (say studying engineering). It's letting more people from a certain group with the drive to do something get a chance at it. If your instructors are worth their weight, they should still be able to effectively teach. Besides, appropriate assessment in the admissions process is hardly an exact science as is. For example, if you simply counted extra-curriculars, girls on average may have less because there might have been less available sports teams. This is certainly changing now with laws forcing schools to spend equal amounts on mens and womens sports, but that's a possible affector.
Anyway, my arguments really only have any bearing in the college admissions process. Completely irrelevant to hobby demographics.

Well actually you are discriminating against women. I would say that your point probably applies loosely to women and gaming, as I know many women who make their livings on the computer. I would also hazard a guess that the majority of women gamers are most likely the fantasy game types, like EQ and such but I have no solid info on backing that up. There they can fantasize and chat at the same time, hehehe. Running around shooting others does'nt seem to be their bag baby yah!.

Many women also don't reveal themselves, they just go by a male alias online and no-one's the wiser.

Bravo Jeff. Afimitive action in all forms pisses me off. it is inequality in the guise of promoting equality. I think this has to be one of the most blantant instances of cultural hipocracy in the history of the world.
