Well, ive noticed that all females seem to be absolutly pathetic when it comes to computers. Leave such a "creature" alone with the most powerful computer and access to ALL the games in the world, and youll find them playing windows solitare or tetris. Another idea: leave a girl in a room with the fastest internet connection in the world, and youll surely find her chating on MIRc on 6 channels at the same time with total strangers. Is this ALL they know? MIRc and...boring, dated, lame (put it any way you want) games??Im not discriminating anybody, but i just couldnt help noticing. So no hard feelings  .

Most girls know as much about computers as...

I guess you could say the same about average, non-computer literate guys, it just so happens that there are MORE computer literate guys than there are girls.

Haha, so true. Although my girlfriend has figure out how to play a lot of zone.com games. Of course, no way in hell that's happening on my computer, but she does it at her place.

my sister borrows my laptop just so she can play solitaire on it. and my mother plays it on their desktop all the time.

of course, some girls like my sister are great with Photoshop and stuff... but they tend to be really dumb about computers outside a couple programs. that, and they tend to use MACS

Well they're definitely not into 3d shooters. The only girl I know who tried half-life stopped the game after the attack of the first head-crab. She says it scared the s**t out of her.... she should have sticked to spider solitaire...

I think the only word I'd change is "belligerent." That just doesn't do justice to the many other types of drunks, notably the ones that have already passed out.

And AS, it's not a ridiculous stereotype if it's true. Guys, on average, use computers more and are more familiar with their schematics and whatnot than the average girl.

I'd have to say I know quite a few females who're fine with computers. My girl friend plays computer games all when she can (aside from school and such), she can kick some ass in Ghost Recon ... so, I don't think she sucks at it lol.

Also, the instructor I've had for my computer science courses for the last two and a half years is a woman. The head of my CS department is a woman, and she has a PhD in CS.
Also, a friend of mine's girlfriend can kick his ass in Quake III  . You gotta respect that (he's not a 'newbie' to say the least)

So, saying that most girls don't know anything about computers ... I don't know ... I know quite a few, however, there's also my mom and some of my friends's moms/sisters ... no offense to their inteligence or anything, but they're dunces on the computer ... I think it's because for the most part girls are afraid they'll break something ... too bad they never consider the fact that the computer they're using is running Windows  (Sorry, I feel like giving MS a hard time today, mostly because of some events that happened with my computer last night GRRR).

Damn this is one funny thread

In defence of the other half of our species, I do know girls (at least two) who are quite comepetant with computers. my best friend is always throwing me off because she know so much. I naturaly assume that she is illiterate (it's the truest sterotype I've ever encountered) and then she comes up with things I didn't know!

That also sort of shows how women tend to know one program (usually really well but still only one program.) It's like my friend's mom...she can code in about 4 languages, but still can hardly use the basic windows interface.

Girls are able to be good at computers, they just don't find them of interest as much as us guys do.

My girlfriend is quite good at computers, it's rather embarrassing when she pwns me in The Specialists.

Yeah, I'm sure it's because she's uses nothing but Unix or a Macintosh. I know the instructors at my school however, can use Windows lol. I mean there's a reason why they're so against it. (Usually when you're very framilure with certain languages, when you see a program written with that language you can tell, by what is NOT working, as to why it isn't working.)

It's stupid to say that girls aren't able to use computers as well as guys, but you can't argue with the idea that the average girls isn't as good with PCs as the average guy...

I know a couple of people who will disagree with any man vs women stereotype to the last, but in my view this is just crazy. I'm doing an engineering degree, and there are 2 girls on my course - the department by it's own admission slightly favours girls during the application process to try and get more in. I think it's fair to say 'in general, girls aren't as interested in doing an engineering degree as boys', but a couple of people I know would never let that go, they would keep syaing 'girls can be engineers just as good', totally ignoring what I'm actually saying.

To ignore the facts on the differences between men and women is just as bad as thinking the stereotypes apply to all.

stereotyping aside guys, it is a fact, that it is harder to motivate the female sex to computers, but i have noticed that the few whom do partake in it, excel beyond their counterparts in most cases. females tend to have more stick-toitiveness then males do.. i do not believe a female should ever be shown preferential treatment, JUST to motivate them, but more so allow the current females to coax others in instead. any system that shows preference to a minority group, is cheating everyone else in the group who worked hard to get where they are. i would rather not turn this into a debate, but i have seen this in workplaces, and strongly disagree with any system that practices this method. no one will ever work as hard at something GIVEN to them as they would if they EARNED it.

Preferential treatment in being a bit less tight with the application requirements at an engineering with women has some benefits - almost every engineering school has a bit of a ratio problem that makes out of class activities that much more dull.

I disagree with it to Orph. I don't see why people don't just leave it - if a group of people generally aren't as interested in something, then why push them into it? We don't have initiatives encouraging boys to do ballet or be more interested in ponies. I don't understand why people aren't happy to accept their differences in this case.

I don't think in anyway it's pushing a group of people that don't want to do something into doing something (say studying engineering). It's letting more people from a certain group with the drive to do something get a chance at it. If your instructors are worth their weight, they should still be able to effectively teach. Besides, appropriate assessment in the admissions process is hardly an exact science as is. For example, if you simply counted extra-curriculars, girls on average may have less because there might have been less available sports teams. This is certainly changing now with laws forcing schools to spend equal amounts on mens and womens sports, but that's a possible affector.

Anyway, my arguments really only have any bearing in the college admissions process. Completely irrelevant to hobby demographics.

Well actually you are discriminating against women. I would say that your point probably applies loosely to women and gaming, as I know many women who make their livings on the computer. I would also hazard a guess that the majority of women gamers are most likely the fantasy game types, like EQ and such but I have no solid info on backing that up. There they can fantasize and chat at the same time, hehehe. Running around shooting others does'nt seem to be their bag baby yah!.

Well actually you are discriminating against women. [...] I know many women who make their livings on the computer.
That's fine, but it doesn't stop people from being correct in saying that in general, girls aren't as interested in computers as guys are. The typical response is 'oh well I know a girl who works as a webdesigner', or whatever, but this does not in any way go against the 'in general' statement...

Why are people so against the fact that guys and girls can, in general, have different interests? It is not discrimination if I say 'there are more black people in affrica than in sweden', it's just a fact that happens to conincide with something like gender or race. I never said 'not being interested in computers means you are an idiot and are infirior' - this would be nonsense. Not being interested in computers as much as guys doesn't have to be a bad thing or an insult, it is just a fact.

I like to go out on my mountainbike and do trick riding - in 5 years I haven't seen one girl doing this. If I say 'girls aren't as interested in doing street riding as guys', this is not a discrimination of any kind. It is a general rule coming from the fact that there aren't really any girl street riders.
I don't think in anyway it's pushing a group of people that don't want to do something into doing something (say studying engineering). It's letting more people from a certain group with the drive to do something get a chance at it.
You must have misunderstood me. If there was a guy and a girl who both had the same grades that were slightly under what you need to get onto my course, all things being equal, they would let the girl on the course and not the guy. It isn't about letting people who have the drive to do something - they can already do that, get the grades, and you are in. What they are doing is making concessions to try and encourage a group of people who would otherwise not be so interested in engineering to do an engineering degree. A girl already had the exact same opertunity to do my course as a guy, but now it is easier for a girl to get onto this course, simply because they have arbitrarily decided they want more girls in engineering. Perhaps because some fool said 'Hey... no girls on your course... thats discrimination!!'. You don't get any kind of initiative trying to get more guys to study english, but if a guy wants to, and he gets the grades, he can. What is wrong with that?

Many women also don't reveal themselves, they just go by a male alias online and no-one's the wiser.

Bravo Jeff. Afimitive action in all forms pisses me off. it is inequality in the guise of promoting equality. I think this has to be one of the most blantant instances of cultural hipocracy in the history of the world.

i despise any form of affirmative action as well, but i can imagine many other instances of hypocrisy that far outweigh it.. maybe its age, or sensitivity to other wrongs..

sometime, when i have recovered from my last bout with the snarkpit, i might be coaxed into my other unpopular opinions about life :/
