Did you know that you only need to know pi to 30 decimal places to calculate the circumfence of the universe to the accuarey of the width of a hydrogen atom? :leper:

Pointless piece of pi info.

The fun thing with PI is that there is no pattern, you have to learn
every number. That makes it even more impressive. Maybe I'm the only
one that find it cool when someone can memorize a lot of numbers like
that

In 10 days I could probably learn the first 1000 digits if I just tried...

and I don't really get that atom thing above ^_^

I'm interested in how this would work. Cause making pi more and more precise won't account for the fact that you'll also need the radius of the universe to the accuracy of the width of a hydrogen atom. And that's not happening.

Face/Off, I saw that too - bloody awful film. As I cynically spouted on
TEH IRC! - all gimmick, no substance. The plot was thin and badly
executed, the non Troy/cant remember the other guys name characters
could have been discarded entirely as their significance to the film
was nothing.

Even when they were, they were cliched as hell - take the rogues in
that institute, stereotypical "psychos" with smart haircuts and
glasses, softly spoken.. yawn haven't we seen this a thousand times
before? I managed to watch til the end, even with the break for the
10pm news, but was pretty much bored and resigned to defeat within the
first 45 minutes. Mediocre and unoriginal.

I saw The Thin Red Line the other day too, yawn once more - overly
long, overly iconic (and once again, cliched) and it ripped so much
from other war films before it that it became embarassing to watch.

Bleh, i'm gonna rent something good to stem this tide of crapola films that are worming their way onto terrestrial television.

Face Off is such a piece of s**t ... I hate you John Woo.

Thin Red Line is sooooooo god dammed boring. Except for Nick Nolte ... because he kicks ass ... and when Woody Harrelson blows his ass off.

I just got back from the movies, saw the Bourne Supremacy. Bad ass, and thank God they killed Clive Owen off in the first one (s**tty actor).

I like how movies are getting back to the whole idea of continuity. You'll notice in sequels from time to time s**t is really different from the first movie, Blade did this a little bit. But its great when they keep such continuity like in the Bourne series (Bourne ... Conspiracy (?) is next I believe ... its whatever the last book is)

It's a good watch ... except Julia Styles is a no talent bitch. I hated her in the first one too ... and in everything else she's in ... and she's not hot, so don't even start on that angle.

The last film I have seen recently is Dr. Strangelove. It's brilliant, of course, and George C. Scott is awesome in it.

As for an actual new movie, the only one I'm really interested in seeing is The Bourne Supremacy, but I'll probably get to the theater and see it.

Heh, believe it or not (with my hatred of just about everything  ) there is! Let's see..

Taxi Driver

Mean Streets

Scarface

Platoon

Das Experiment

Full Metal Jacket (although admittedly it kinda loses it a bit after the boot camp)

A Clockwork Orange..

(in fact, most Kubrick stuff)

Seven Samurai

Jaws

Ghostbusters

Leon

The Usual Suspects

tarantino stuff, but not overly like - i personally think he's way overrated..

Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma

Trainspotting

Battle Royale

Audition

Ring (jap version, original)

Das Experiment

The Godfather I, II (and i suppose III but I wont label the trilogy as a "favourite" because of number III)

Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi

Goodbye Lenin (havent seen this all the way through yet but it was good from what I saw

bleeeh loads really, anything good with a decent plot/direction etc...

Ringu???? What the s**t!
I'm sorry, that movie was terrible with its I'll-fill-in-this-plot-hole-with-the-fathers-preminitions crap ...

Otherwise you're list is pretty decent.

What about Paul T. Anderson's and Wes Anderson's stuff? ... They both kick ass ... although Bottle Rocket kind of blew.

I dont think its ringu I saw, cant remember any father character ?? it
was Ring 0, if i recall correctly - came as a bundle with Audition and
another crazy japanese flick..

to my shame, I havent actually seen the royal tenenbaums/bottle rocket,
I had a tip off from my film buff friend to avoid the former  His
recommendations usually suit my taste as well..

out and out comedy films generally aren't my bag, theres a few that I
like but most I avoid with a passion, most of the ones i've watched are
pretty simplistic humour.. - ill keep an eye out for some of his titles
though

thanks as well, my list is pretty much a quick look at the more well
known titles I enjoy (and have watched more than once).. the list is
much longer, but I thought that was a good general overview of my
tastes.

Heh- The Royal Tenenbaums is a great flick. The scene where Gwyneth Paltrow's childhood self looses her finger is just priceless.

It's a great comedy, but it really is incredibly sad at some points. Very very good movie overall.

I like Face Off actually. Sure the plot and characters are pretty discardable despite the stories attempt to give them depth, but the action is stylish and exciting. Much better than Broken Arrow if you ask me...but then I far prefer Nicholas Cage to Christian Slater, so that could explain it!

Gwil, I really enjoyed Audition too. Really strange film, that develops unlike any other I've seen. The fact is begins as a somewhat comic drama, and ends as a disturbing horror (and the change between these styles is extremely slow yet really interesting to watch uncover) sets is apart from most other films I can think of.

I recommend you watch "Ichi the Killer" (the live acted film as opposed to the anime, I've not seen that), its another film that is at times difficult to watch due to its torture scenes, but the film itself is really good and even without the graphic scenes that make it popular, it would be an excellent film.

Saw that a couple of weeks ago ReNo - watched the anime, then the
"real" Ichi.. didn't get to the end though, missed the last 40 minutes
or so because I had to shoot.

Looked good from what I saw, bit depraved though (I figure thats the whole point but, meh)

The anime was pretty darn good as well, but the actual film was better
of what I saw. The anime flick acts almost as a good background/scene
setter before watching the full Ichi as well.

Well, transcendentals are the irrationals that aren't the root to any integer polynomial- a polynomial with integer coefficients, like 3x2 + 2 - so numbers like sqrt2 and so on are irrational but not transcendental. You'll need a proof of the Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem and to know lots of algebra

Gwil, ... Ring 0 .... OH! ... that. Yeah, that's not the "original" that was made after "The Ring" which was based off of "Ringu". Yeah ... well just for prior notice, Ringu blows ass chunks

I haven't seen Ring0 yet ... doubt I will in the near future either.

[NOTE]
Ringu = Japanese (old)
The Ring = American
Ring 0 = Japanese (new ... er)

And I guess they're making a "The Ring 2" ... don't really know how. Maybe it's based off Ring 0.

Reno, Yes ... yes Face Off is better then Broken Arrow ... but they both still suck

I concur. King Arthur just looked horrible to me from the very
beginning. From the reviews I've read though, it seems the main
problems are it tries to be epic like Troy, it dumbs down the love
triangle between Arthur/Guinvere/Lancelot, and it has too much damn
fog. I suggest other movies... Like Napoleon Dynamite or something.

I liked Event Horizon, and remember liking Mortal Kombat (haven't seen it in years though, I may hate it nowadays), but Resident Evil was pure bollocks in my opinion, and I'm afraid he might turn AVP into another Resident Evil. He claims to be a huge fan of the Alien and Predator movies, so I hope he knows what he's doing.

Little random piece of knowledge for you - the underground train station scene from Resident Evil the movie, was filmed in the same location as the interior of the office scenes in Equilibrium. I don't know that for a fact, but I just noticed the ceiling is exactly the same in both films, and its kinda obvious its the same place despite the differences in use.

Errr, I don't actually have anything very relevant to add to the conversation however

Reno, Resident Evil has an ... arua ... I can't explain it any other way, so does Mortal Kombat. They're terrible movies, but so much fun to watch. Resident Evil has terrible acting, terrible story, and terrible effects ... but its so fun to watch.

The same thing goes with Mortal Kombat, probably to a greater effect.

I'm sure AVP will be the same way. You can only hope it wont be worse then his worst movie ... Soldier (Which I think he also wrote).

This sort of phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "so bad it's good", i.e. it's enjoyable to watch how bad a movie really is. A good example is the movie "The Core", which made almost zero sense, but was enjoyable because of it.

I disagree, there certainly are films which are fun to watch because they are terrible, but I think Res Evil and many others aren't terrible, just nothing special, yet are often hugely entertaining despite lacking in the departments that make up a good film.

I know absolutely nothing of the movie, just saw an oh-so-tempting poster in the cinema and I was bought over  Strangely enough, I never realised it until today, but a girl I know looks really like her.

/turns on the charm...
Damn! He's one step ahead of me!

She has blonde hair though, and I can now say with full confidence, that Keira suits her natural dark hair much better
