Finally got to see 'Shaun of the Dead' last night and it's every bit as good as I was expecting. I was a big fan of 'Spaced' and the film was a great successor to it. And the pool table/Queen combo is genius

I also watched the Punisher the night before, which was much better than I was expecting. I think I was half-expecting it to be your typical camp over-the-top superhero flick (I know....he's not really a superhero!), but it was a much darker experience. Only thing I can really criticise was that John Travolta still can't act for toffee.

I watch too much TV I think....I also worked my way through the 'Harsh Realm' box-set, and it amazes me that such a good show was given the chop after 3 episodes. Great continuity with the potential to have wildly different episodes (World War II beta test area etc. ).

I've gonna watch 'Freaked' tonight I think. I managed to get hold of it finally, as I remember seeing a 'making of...' it on 'Movies, Games and Videos' donkeys years ago (1993!) and then forgetting what the film was called.

Hero is a rocking film - my flatmate managed to get it in Hong Kong
when it was new over there (about 2 years ago) and we loved every
minute of it. The fact it has Tony Leung in it means it HAD to be good

I can't remember if I've mentioned any of these asian films before, but
for anyone who is interested in foreign movies they are all worth
checking out...

The Warrior (sometimes called "Musa the warrior"...haven't a clue why though!)

Basically about a small group of Korean envoys trying to arrange a
peace agreement with the Ming, but the Ming think they are spies and
send them into exile. On their way back to Korea they rescue a Ming
princess from some Mongols, and try to return her to the Mings in order
to complete their mission. Loads of cool action scenes, wonderful
music, great characters, and beautiful outfits have made this one of my
favourite films.

Infernal Affairs

A cool crime movie set in Hong Kong, where both the police force and
triads have a mole inside them that the high ranking people on either
side can't identify. It stars Tony Leung for starters, so that works in
its favour, and having such a great supporting cast including Anthony
Wong helps turn this into one hell of a movie. It also has a prequel
and sequel in Infernal Affairs 2 and 3 respectively.

Yeah, Infernal Affairs is a pretty good movie. It's a tad slow to start with, but it really has you wondering what's going on towards the end.

I went to go see Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite over the weekend as well- I absolutely loved Garden State, and Napoleon Dynamite is one of the funniest things I think I've ever seen. No point to it at all, but it's still hilarious.

I would suggest them both.

I've been looking forward to Garden State, but I just can't seem to find a theater running it. Guess I'll wait for the DVD and rent it.

Personally, I like the "viewaskewnaverse", but I f**king HATE Kevin Smith. The only characters he can write are based on people he knows (Which is terrible since they let him write for Daredevil [probably one of the worst DD writers to date]).

Although, I'm looking forward to his upcoming sequel to clerks, which he said they'll start shooting either November or January, I can't remember which.

Thank God he's not writing or directing the Green Hornet.

By the way, Chasing Amy is his best movie, its the only movie he's ever made which is well rounded and has the funniest beginning (the comic convention with Star Wars being explained as a 'slave' film).

Anyway, Has anyone checked out THX1138, I know its a re-release, but I'm still wondering what some (rather) normal people thought of it.

[NOTE]
HOLY f**kING s**t, TWO DAYS UNTIL APOCALYPSE!!!! Its going to be so terrible .... I can hardly wait

I saw Resident Evil Apocalypse last night ...

Why did Nemesis have to be in the movie??
Pretty much everything besides the scenes with Nemesis felt like the first RE movie (which was awesome) ... but the scenes with him sucked my ass. He's incredibly stupid looking and rediculous acting. Granted he looks exactly like he does in the game, not including the S&M leather they added, but it just didn't work ... at all. It also seemed like they stayed away from zombie goodness when Nemesis was introduced .... which pissed me off. I suppose, overall I liked it ... but its a very marginal liking. Meaning, the first one is gold in comparision. However, I did go into the movie expecting a piece of trash (which would be fun to watch).

The only thing is, it wasn't boring at any point ... so that's good, I suppose.
Its just the plot holes are gaping wide in this movie ... I suppose it'd be worth, maybe, a matinee showing, if you want to see it that is.

There are so many things they could have done to make Nemesis so much cooler .... but they didn't!

It actually looked like it was written by some guy who has loved B horror/action movies his entire live and he walked into a room of people playing RE 3 (the movie really has only minor bits and pieces from RE2  ) and watched for 20 minutes and said, "Hey, that'd work great in my movie".

I almost don't want to believe that Paul Anderson wrote it ... but then again, he wrote Soldier too ...

I need to think more about the movie, to see if anything can be justified ...

[NOTE*: It's still a blast to watch though ... I mean, one of the reasons why its rated 'R' is, "Non-Stop Violence".]

I must say that the Nemesis does look damn awful in the trailers, so I
figured he would probably be pretty lame in the final film. Glad to
hear its otherwise like the first, just what I was hoping for

I really think the village was great.

When I was watching the first 5 minutes, I thought is was going to be
like the Blair Witch project (tooo much waving branches), but it was very good. The conversations were a bit long and cheesy
sometimes, but the suspense was OK ...

And about the film being "only scary to teenage girls" ... well, I
watched it with a friend of mine, and she thought it was scary .... but
then again, I thought that too

Yeah, I saw Apocalypse last night too, and pretty much have the same thoughts on it as Crono.

Nemesis was a good idea in theory (a polar opposite to Alice, in many ways), but its execution within the film seemed almost tacked on. He was essentially the thing they brought in when they tired of footage of foot-soldiers blasting waves of zombies, and to have a final confrontation with the group.

Overall though it's still fun to watch. Not bad at all, really.

[SPOILERS]
I think if Nemesis was there to hunt Zombies it would have been a kagillion times better and the whole "Fight Him" thing at the end was f**kING RETARDED. But, yeah, overall I really liked it. There's unncanny resembalence to the game in most parts, even parts with Nemesis in them (Walking through walls). I also didn't like how they strayed away from Jill towards the end. But, overall, it was "good". As good as RE can be anyway.

The other thing is, people keep bitching how bad the movies are. What do you expect? Its based on a B-Story game, which, whether you admit it or not, is a rediculous series of games. Why would you even accept anything that's beautifully made? It wouldn't feel like the game at all.

The original was a pain to sit through for me, it managed to sink below my already low expectations. And by the sounds of it, the second doesn't seem to be any different as a movie.

Well, erm, this is late but oh well. I watched Frailty and Panic Room last night and The Butterfly Effect tonight... Frailty was weird in a weird way, Panic Room made women look technologically retarded (realistically, natch), and The Butterfly Effect was surprisingly good, and basically the only one I'd actually recommend to others.

I enjoyed Frailty - though I do think it fell into the trap of the 'ooh wait...there's a twist' genre. Too many films since Sixth Sense are doing this now and it kinda spoils them a little. Was the same with Identity, which felt like the twist had been tacked on as a last minute thing.

Identity works in my mind for the sole reason that the rainstorm isn't just tacked onto the movie like so many horror films seem to do. Most just say "OMGF TEH HORAR IS PEEKING HEAR LETS MAEK RANE AND LIGHTNGIN 2 MAEK IT SCUARY LOLLZ," but in Identity, it really seemed to fit the mood of the movie, and actually did have relevance to the plot/symbolism of the overall movie. So, points there.

And I really enjoyed Frailty, but like Adam said, it seemed too intentional instead of "something that just happens."

Another good movie that I just remembered was The Following. It's done by the same guy who did Memento, and it's quite a fun little trip. If you enjoyed Memento, you'll probably get a kick out of The Following (if you can even find a copy of it, that is). It uses a similar style of non-linear story-telling (although Memento could be construed as being linear, just backwards) that really works well.

One catagory would be "buy only". I doubt you'll find it for rent. And I believe movie places, like morons, would place it under suspence, or the generic area of Drama.

Which Dead End? The one with Christopher Walken?
"The Kid is gown-na diay"

I love the campy doomsday device Martin Sheen has.

No, the more recent Dead End. Watched it last night, and while the ending spoils the whole film (i'd have preferred them all to have died and that be it...) the rest of the film is really good. Lots of tension and atmosphere and a little disturbing in places too!

Cellular

Seen more on a whim and boredom than actual interest. Co-stars Kim
Basinger and William H. Macy have surprisingly fairly flat characters /
performances. Takes itself far too seriously. Absurdity is present in
every single scene, and you can't help but just laugh. "Action" is all
very contrived, along with the "plot" as well. There's a really good
music track hidden in this abomination of a film though.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

The whole movie was shot in green-screen (or is it blue?) I believe,
which lends it a kind of fake, old retro feel. The CG they use is nice
though, very stylistic of pre-WW2 era art. Ultimately pretty good - not
nearly enough screentime for Angelina Jolie though, I think. The
trailer is also misleading in various ways, but then again, a lot of
trailers generally are. It kind of fell a bit short of my expectations,
but definately something worth watching I think. Writing, I felt, was
generally pretty good.

Sky Captain was awesome.

The first thing I thought of when the movie started was that, "this is how the new superman movie should look" (not that it will, but it would completly fit).

I loved the old 40s radio show feel of the thing. It totally rocked.

On another note, Sin City looks ... interesting to say the least. That comic book really isn't that great, but Frank Miller is so awesome.
They're doing the same thing they did in Sky Captain, where NOTHING on the screen was actually there, except for the actors and the small props for the actors (ie. clothes).

But, they're making Sin City look VERY much like the comic, the movie is black and white, and only certain colors (I've only seen red so far) are in color. And they're vibrant.
Also, Sin City is said to have the largest ensemble cast ever. Which isn't always a good thing, but it looks promising here.

The Shawshank Redemption was a good film. same director (Frank Dara-something) that done The Green Mile, a great film. the 1st time i seen any of TGM was only from half way through, and i still pronounced it the best film i'd ever seen.

it's probably still up there.

Darko is pretty good, don't watch the directors cut though, it pretty much is ruined in that version.

British themed films are notoriously unsuccessful here in the States, thats a sad fact, but I just finished watching "Calendar Girls"

I highly recommend it..

(notice, I did not say, British made films, so keep your derogatory remarks to yourselves, British made, does not in and/or of itself signify unsuccessful.. look around you, this site fairs rather well)

Really? I heard films like Snatch, Lock Stock and 28 Days Later did pretty damn well over in the States.

Finally got round to watching 'Cypher'. Great film, lots of twists and turns that felt natural to the plot. Reminded me a little of 'Gattaca' in places. Totally different film but coming from the same train of thought.

Now for 'The Warriors' I saw bits of this a while back but didn't take much notice of it (I think I was flicking between two different channels at the time).
