happy birthday Forceflow.

does being 17 have any added benefits in Belgium, like buying beer or voting?

I checked out his website and he seems to have an extensive list of coding knowledge for a 17 year old.

The only added benefit us Americans get when we turn 17 is the ability to see R rated movies in the theatres and buy M rated games. Oooh wow aren't we such a liberal country.

you may join the military with parental concent..

you may get married with parental consent.

you can drink on base in the military..

getting into the movies is hardly earth shattering

You can't join the military until you hit 18 and you can't drink until you are 21. Although there are some loop holes in some states for the drinking age. Many of them I suspect excist in Texas.

P.S. I add some pics of an old map of mine to my profile if you want to check them out. I'll put up more maps in the next few weeks when I get less lazier.

and Jeff, i dunno if its still on the books, but in Missouri, a girl can/could get married at 12, and i think a male can at 16 or 17 with parental consent for each.

qualifications?
Age. One would think that age would be a simple category. One is either old enough, or too old, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. By federal law (10 U.S.C., 510), the minimum age for enlistment in the United States Military is 17 (with parental consent) and the maximum age is 35. This is to ensure than anyone who enlists on active duty can be eligible for retirement (20 years of service) at the mandatory age of 55 (60 in some cases). However, DOD policy allows the individual services to specify the maximum age of enlistment based upon their own unique requirements. The individual services have set the following maximum ages for non-prior service enlistment:

Ah I see now. Ok thanks you were right. That gives me a wierd feeling though. I never really thought about being 18 and going into the military but 17 is only a few months older than my current age. I couldn't imagine myself have to travel across the world, given a gun, and told to go kill someone.

killing? is that all the military means to you?.. you might consider researching the option.. killing is but a small portion, especially during peace time.

seriously though, i would recommend the military for everyone..

I was just using killing as an example of something that would be scary and foreign to me at such a young age. I am just old enough to get my license. I know that there are many more options in the military for a person such as myself but I have no intent on joining the military. My dad was in the navy and served with the marines for 20 years as a DevilDoc and he doesn't want me to ever join.

well thats because he picked the two worse branches.. try air force if you are smart enough to handle it, or the army if you have lesser skills.. i know its stereo typed.. but the marines are all jar heads, and the navy is full of guys in touch with their feminine sides

I turn 17 in a matter of weeks (November 9th). Being 17 in Canada means... Well... Nothing.

Age of consent for sex is 14 for both genders (The states are rather messed with the different ages to genders thing), you can get married with consent at 16.

Anyways, happy B-day Forceflow.

In some cases, yes. There are actually a few court cases on the books where a husband was arrested for statutory rape when the parties were in one of them weird underage parental-consenting marriages. I've also read that the age of consent actually varies from state to state; 18 is more the nationally recognized pornography rights age.

Oh, and on a different note, Mole Day is also my birthday. Hitting a palindrome this year.

ok, i am not 100% sure of this but..

1) the age of sexual consent is 18 nation wide in the US both male and female.
2) the age of consenting to marriage varies from state to state with the parents permission.

of course, usually the reason parent have to consent is because the underage daughter is knocked up, so they wont enforce choice number 1 and throw the guy in jail for statutory rape.

my only gripe about the age laws is this.. if you can fight and die for your country at ages 17-18-19-and 20 you should be allowed to do any adult thing at those ages.. mind you, i do NOT want a bunch of kids doing adult things, i am saying the age law should fit better, if you cannot be truly considered a FULL adult till 21, you should not be taken into the military till age 21..

hope that made sense, and didn't get no kiddies panties all knotted up about ageisms again

In Finland you get to buy booze(Vol.20% or less) at the age of 18, but the sad thing is that you can see 12-year-old girls running around in streets with strong booze... I started drinking at the age of 14, which is a bit too early for anyone... I'm losing my point in here again...

Happy Birthday Forceflow!

[editus maximus]And about the army... Well we get three choices: 1.Army Service(6 to 12 months) 2.Civil Service(13 months) 3.Jail(3 years)[/editus maximus]

But that 'drinking on bases' clause is a get out isn't it. If anybody says 'why can you fight in a war at 17, but not have a beer', the answer can come back 'well if you are in a war, you can have a beer on the base!'. I know it's not a straight arguement, but I guess they are saying that if you have proved yourself ready to be in the army by going through all the training successfuly, then you have shown your maturity, wheras someone not in the army hasn't been through all that, and so hasn't proved themselves.

Or maybe it's just so some fools will go 'Im gonna be in the army so I can get me some early beer!' :heee:

no i think you misunderstood a bit..

i don't think its fair for two people, one in the military, and one a civilian to be judge differently, only because they are underage as a civilian.

remember, i do not support underage, i am saying its a double standard i cannot deal with very well. why is kid #1 treated like an adult, only because he joined the military? is it maturity? doubtful, kids act no older in or out of the military.. is it compensation?? could be, it might incite people to join at a younger age to be permitted legally to do adult things.. but i honestly think its cannon fodder.. younger people make much better fodder.. its bulls**t, but thats what i believe they are up to..

In Belgium

  • Drive a car: 18 (darn !)
  • Drive a scooter: 16

in the US, the displacement of the engine designates scooter and motorcycle.. not its name..

scooter is less than 50cc's or less i think, but whatever, its engine displacement.

Congrats and happy B-day Forceflow

I'll turn 17 on december 4th.

There's no benefits over here either.

You can have sex at age 15, get married at 18 (16 with parets permission), get driver license at 18, drink/smoke at 18.

I've only recently discovered that you can get engaged at age 16.

And that there's no legal limit to how many girls you can get engaged to.

HELLO LADIES
