Recently watched

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the LAST series you should be worrying about exact translation for. The books aren't even the original versions! It started as a radio show, afterwhich Douglas Adams was offered cash money to turn it into a book. He kept missing deadlings and eventually had to send the thing in as "unfinished" in his mind. In every book following, he contradicted previous volumes on a regular basis. The guide also got made into the miniseries and record albums, both of which were different from both the radio show and the book. This isn't a Tolkien-esque perfectionist here... this is a man who understands his work is allowed to evolve. Granted, there were a lot of things which weren't fully explained, but none seemed very integral to the movie, and I appreciated how at least they were going on in the background (towels, the sighing doors, etc.). The truly important stuff was taken near verbatim, everything else was organic. Good enough for me.

Anyone watch this weeks episode of "Lost"?

I saw that, was kinda funny.

Wouldn't be surprised if someone thinks games are the reason behind terrorism too after seeing that. :/

Also glad to see that Lost is back on track after not airing for a few weeks.

Just a quick thing about Hitchhickers Guide, it would have been a lot
worse. Adams was approached with a screenplay and he rejected it
because he hated it. Then he wrote his own. So the whole
script for the new movie was written by him, but if he had allowed the
other script I'm guessing it wouldn't have been nearly as good.

I rather enjoyed the movie as well. While it didn't follow the
book exactly, it's still a great movie. I'm going to see it a
second time tomorrow, and I'm going to completely forget about the book
and I'm sure that will make me enjoy it more.

BTW, watched the China Syndrome...cool.

It has got the be the single most engrossing show I have ever seen for a new series. They didn't even take the customary 2 years to get into their groove. They got it right out the gate.

I cannot get over how each and every episode is a cliff hanger either. Very good writers, Very good acting. I bet even our resident critic couldn't find anything wrong to complain about. Looks toward Oregon.. Yup, even he could watch it and find enjoyment afterward.

... I've never watched it. One person told me about it and ... I don't care for cliff hanger after cliff hanger ... cliff hangers are also a pretty bad way to tell a story, to be honest. In a television medium it's more forgivable. I suppose it'd how it's portrayed.

Here's an example: I'd rather have a cliff hanger like Empire Strikes Back then The Matrix Reloaded. Each "unit" of whatever series needs to feel complete on its own, having major cliff hangers completely destroys that type of concept.

But, then again, I've never seen the show. However, that also means: I don't care. I don't even watch TV all that much.

Anything serialized can handle cliffhangers much better than anything that is supposed to be watched and viewed on its own merits. In other words, on a TV show, you need something to keep people coming back. In a movie, you don't.

Is it? Think about this.

Having in on going story is important in any tv show, obviously. The same way it is important in any movie series.

I personally don't agree with the way most TV shows are written. I think, at least in the US, there should be shows that adapt the "season" idea for television. Right now, a season doesn't mean much past "every 13 - 21 episodes" or so. While it should represent its own story. With in that, I can understand having cliff hanger episodes, I'm not against them. Yet, each episode, like any film, should feel whole on its own. Otherwise what's the point of watching something if it simply moves along a plot? Sadly, this is exactly what most shows do.

I suppose it would take too much work, but it'd be nice if every episode of a show was vital and not just some hub-bub filler. It's also sad that the only way anyone has ever thought of doing this is using cliff hangers. :\

I'm reading what you said and all you're convincing me of is that cliffhangers are a lazy, unimaginative way to tie a series together - not that they're impractical or at odds with the primary goals of the series.

I just watched "Birth" starring Nicole Kidman and I really really liked
it. It deviates a lot from typical Hollywood movies, with some
art film elements and heavy unanswered questions.

Has anyone seen it? I'm curious to see what people thought because I have a feeling its really divisive.

Interestingly, the director apparently went the road of David Fincher
as this was his first motion picture after breaking into the industry
with some music videos.

Watched Hostage yesterday, it was OK but I expected better even though I don't really like Bruce Willis. Crazy kids, though.

Watched part of the new Exorcist tonight, mostly laughable... then I got "treated" to the Notebook, definitely a chick flick 'cause it's so sappy but that means I at least got to hang around chicks, and it's got some good lines in it, such as this gem:

"That's what we do, we fight! You tell me when I'm an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you're a pain in the ass, which you are 99% of the time!"

Just watched "Alone in the dark"- Very strange movie. Combines "Island of Doctor Moreau" and "RELIC".. Sorta anyways.

Didn't everyone used to say Resident Evil ripped off Alone in the Dark? (Failing to realize RE was based on another Capcom game made in '87, "Home, Sweet Home". I think the first Alone in the Dark game came out the same year)

I just watched "The Big Sleep" (1946) and "The Long Goodbye"
(1973). It was really fun to watch them back to back, as the
first one is a great example of the hard-boiled tradition, and the
second a great example of the demythification of said tradition.
Anyway -- as you can tell I have to write a paper on "The Long
Goodbye." I would recommend both if you're a fan of the genre.

I just got done watching I <3 Huckabees, awesome movie, lots of cussing, they manage to drop the f-bomb about 3 times a second (not throughout the movie, obviously) which I always enjoy. Overall a ridiculous + hilarious movie, it'd probably be thought-provoking if I had some semblance of intelligence.

Better than most, but not ground breaking.

I thought it had quite a few pot holes and used the only "oh look an empty room... BOOO Ahhh!" tactic too much.

Well yeah, they seemed to incorporate the "SHOCK" factor repeatedly, but no more so than any other highly successful horror/thriller. My only complaint was the holes the movie left. I felt it ended 1/2 way through. :/

You know what ended abruptly? The Final Cut , I think it's
called. It's got Mrs. Doubtfire (forgot the guys name) in
it. They have a really good thing going for them, and then it
just stops.

I watched BladeRunner recently, and I really enjoyed that. Kick ass music.

About the point where he sees the first "individual" my friends and I were like, "Hey, this movie may be good it they make him a superhero". ?White Noise? with Micheal Keaton as a man who saves people by seeing what happens before it happens would have been a better plot then the ghosts who can SOMETIMES interact with the physical world ... or if you piss them off. :rolleyes:

Still the last shot with the girl wheeling up in her wheel chair is HILLARIOUS! I tried so hard not to laugh when I saw that in theaters.

Oh, and I don't care if I ruined the movie for you because the movie is pretty bad. The sad thing is ... it's bad because of the plot and not much else.

On another note, I saw ?Unleashed?. Oh man. Great. It'd be just as good, I think, if there was no "action", because it isn't an action movie. Another thankful note is that it isn't Rap-Fu, so don't worry. In fact, it strongly parallels ?The Professional?/?Leon?. Granted they're both written by Luc Besson. But I imagine if you liked ?The Professional?, you'll like ?Unleashed?. Also, it's Jet Li's best
non-Chinese movie, hands down. Like most of his Chinese parts, he's acting and not just fighting. It's great. See it now ... or after Star Wars, whichever is more convenient.

Assault on presinct 13, as I watched it looked like any other movie.

And for the most part it was nothing special, but there are some parts
in there that go against everything you expect in a movie like
that. I think anyone who hates the same crap diffrent name kinda
movie should see that. It just kicks what you expect in the jaw
and takes its money and girlfriend.

Also, on that same note, see Saw.

Lock and Stock < Snatch

Snatch was Lock Stock on crack.

I would recommend Der Untergang. It is a really really good movie that takes NO SIDES about the fall of Hitler. Based on the 2002 interview with Hitlers secretary. It is very powerful, yet tasteful with brilliant acting. In German (yes with English subtitles you lazy bum).

I definately preferred Snatch; the characters were at least
distinguishable by more than just their faces. Everyone acted exactly
the same way in Lock Stock (except the scousers, who ruled).

brad pit was fantastic in Snatch aswell.

I just saw a great movie call Trainspotting
and I must say it was great. Its the story of a Heroin attic who
goes from user to clean to user/abuser back to clean. When ever
he is somewhere good, his friends come and f*ck s**t up for him.
The people around you can really bring you down.

That whole "choose life" speech is plastered over the walls of 50% of the dorm rooms at my college.

I did like the movie, from the very beginning. It's funny to think that the director Danny Boyle went from that to The Beach, to 28 Days Later, to Millions. He does a good job not getting pegged into one genre.

I didn't know that the movie was popular or that the director did 28 days later! wow intresting. is Millions any good?

All good movies. Just watched A Night at the Roxbury for the Nth time last night. Laughed my arse off.

Oh man ... Revenge of the Sith is crap-my-pants-good. Darkest Star Wars movie ... period. I'd probably rank it right under Empire (in favoritism). Which is what most of the other geeks are saying as well.

I think people in the theater were really pissed because the movie is so dark (only comparative to other SW movies, of course) That and some of the stuff with Vader in the Vader costume is ... lacking. (one of two things that caught me funny) OH and the acting. WAY F**KING BETTER then Attack of the Clones.

See it. If you see any of them in theaters, this would be the one.

Someone told me this, but I have no idea if it's true. Lucas said, supposedly, that if Episode 3 is ranked as the number one box office movie of the year he'll make VII, VIII, and IX (which would have Mara Jade in them, but not be based on any of the books). However, he may just say this to get people to see it over and over again.

I wonder how they'd market Episode IX, "The Saga is Complete ... AGAIN"

I watched Ong Bak and I thought was entertaining. Unfortunately I
didn't have the subtitles, but I have a feeling the story was
disposable. I really liked how they worked in the tuk tuks.

I know this isn't a movie, but has anyone watched the "first round" of this year's Eurovision competition? If so, what do you think of the contestants (especially about that norwegian rocker who wore lipstick and generally dressed and looked like a fag)?

After 15 hours of slow, slow downloading, I finally got Strange Parallel (the longer (I think) documentary on Elliott Smith) and it's got some craaaaaaaazy s**t in it. It's got a flamethrowing robot which he uses to light his cigarettes, which is the coolest thing ever for obvious reasons. The only bad thing about it is that the people in charge of the documentary seem to know very little about him (as in they ask him questions that everyone who's familiar with his work will know the answer to) But still, if you <3 Mr. Smith as much as I do, you should definitely check it out.

However, 'White Noise' felt like there was an hour of footage snipped out as there were far too many unanswered questions. How were these things communicating, what were they etc? Would have made a great X-Files episode :wink:

My sentiments exactly. The flick was top rate, but left tantalizing holes and/or unanswered questions. I did however feel it was a movie sufficient to be unto itself in that where it did explain, it did so adequately. I am not a Keaton fan, I still only see beetle juice. I cannot seem to get past that.. In the end, I recommend it to anyone interested in a late night "shock fest"

I didn't even know it had started, never watch it.

White Noise is quite good, still doesn't feel special.

I also watched "Open Water" a few days ago and I must say it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.<span style="color: black;"></span>
