Okay then! I just got a flashy idea!

We are going to have a contest right here right now on the most
beautiful song snarkpitters know. Firstly we will pick out ten
favourites people like the most, then make a vote with it so we can
finally find out which is the most beautiful song.

So, right now you're going to start putting down the songs you think
are the most beautiful. Everyone of us should be so kind as to put down
the name of the song, author and (recommendedly) the performer(s).
Hopefully you can share the song with us, or we have to hope it is very
common over certain (ahem) networks.

The song doesn't have to be in english, it can be in whatever language,
performed by whoever and whenever. You can propose up to 5 songs, which
will be then selected out by people on a second topic. Ten songs that
get the most points will go to final vote. The rules of voting will be
made more clear in the course of it.

I believe, after this text, nobody will argue on the point "why didn't the Recently Listened thread fit for this".

Thank you.

vincent, by don mcclean. i couldn't tell you where it was, probably somewhere in san francisco, mid 1960's, but i seen a recording of a live performance that almost made me cry.

there's a lot of more modern music that has the same effect, but for very different reasons.

And the song Vincent. I've never heard it but apparently it's
really beautiful. So much, in fact, that my middle name is
Vincent after the song

I'm with you there, Fishy.

"Ave Maria" - Maria Callas or similar.

"Vincent" - Don Maclean. As per Fishy and French Toast's parents.

"Shine on you crazy diamond" - Pink Floyd.

"In my life" - The Beatles.

"Theme from Harry's game" - Clannad. Maire Brennan has one of those voices that raise the hairs on the back of my neck.

Well no one said about what kind of beautiful... I personally consider some death metal to be beautiful

1: Megadeth - A tout Le Monde
2: In Flames - Everlost (Part 2) [really nice acoustic song]
3: Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
4:
5:

Ok I can't think of others now, I'm at a blank, but I'll edit my post sometime and add em in.

I fixed it!

If you just want something that sounds fantastic, Stone Temple Pilots: No Memory. Golden Brown by The Stranglers is good (Sounds pretty because of the 12 string acoustic)
Never is a Promise by Fiona Apple ... um ... Like Spinning Plates (Live/Piano only) by Radiohead. Then again, most RH songs are made for ritual suicide! So, they're prone to be beautifully written (not sung, by any means, Thom York has goat entrails for vocal chords)

I think "End Music (for a film)" takes the cake though.

Cold Play is like Radiohead, but talented. Most of their stuff is very nice, except Yellow, I hate that song so much.

A bunch of foreign songs ... classical music ... there's too much to come to concise "winner" of sorts. Not to mention, some of the songs you guys are listing I find to be hideously written music.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Lol, the song I mentioned was already a traditional carol when it was first put into print in 1710! Think of how good it must be! Download it!

Probably not most ppl's cup of tea. I enjoy stuff like that. A lot of these newer songs that have been mentioned kinda lost thier appeal when I found out what the artists were like. And some just because my ex likes them.

I think "End Music (for a film)" takes the cake though.
agreed, that song almost made me cry.

I think your being a little hard on tom, he doesn't have a great voice,
but I dont think anyone could do his music any better. I saw
radiohead live and I must say it was the best show I've ever seen, tom
really kicked ass.

I dont think there can be one song that is most beautiful becuase music
(at least to me) is tied to memory. Placebo and Cake are tied to
kinda painful times in my life, so they are more emotional than they
may be for other people. Radiohead is tied to alot, but for the
most part, happy times.

btw... whats that site that logs your music over winamp? (offtopic i know)

johnny cash - hurt (NIN cover)

green day - good riddence or whatsername (tough to call between them,
good riddence is a classic, but i really like whatsername for personal
reasons)

guns n' roses - november rain

killswitch engage - rose of sharyn

lost prophets - last summer (imo great song for playing at those last
gatherings in summer before everyone leaves for uni, college, work etc)

at the drive-in - initiation

something off of hole - celebrity skin, maybe reasons to be beautiful

probs not the most accurate list of what i
think sounds beautiful but im not going through all my music 1st thing

Cannibal Corpse - "Ripping Entrails From a Virgin's c**t"

yes its a real song, no it isn't beautiful....anyway, now that I've got your attention....

Apparently none of you think country music is beautiful.

Country:<br style="color: red;">
Alabama - Dixieland Delight<br style="color: red;">
Faith Hill - Breathe<br style="color: red;">
<br style="color: red;">
Non-country:<br style="color: red;">
Blackmore's Night - Midwinters Night<br style="color: red;">
Air - Cherry Blossom Girl<br style="color: red;">
Enya - Return to Innocence<br style="color: red;">
Doobie Brothers - Black Water

Come What May - Ewen McGregor & Nicole Kidman

<span style="color: red;">

<span style="color: limegreen;">Seriously
guys, the music listed above is very beautiful. If you can't listen to
it and get a nice, warm, soft portion of your heart beating when you
listen to those tracks, you must be a cold stone. Very nice, soothing
tracks. </span>

John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads

Not sure if I'd call it one of the most beautiful songs ever, but it's awesome regardless.

Don't get me wrong, I love Radiohead ... I know it doesn't sound like it, but I do. However, he can't sing. Being that as it may, no it wouldn't work with many other singers.

BLAH, did I say "End Music"? I meant "Exit Music".

SpiKeRs, as good as Rose of Sharyn may be, I don't really consider it to be beautiful- its more moving and emotional, but I suppose it depends what you consider the term beautiful is, which we should have established at the start. Also, it doesn't help that Killswitch can't spell what thier writing about

As for November rain- can't stand the first bit, but love it after the bride dies and slash does his cool solos- great song writing, really has the emotion.

Okay, let me remind the rules now

SONGS, not just musical performances. Songs where people SING.

And only 5 from each of you, okay?

Thank you again

Should have said that up front. I take issue with your definition of a song, but meh.

<DIV class=quotetext>The Pretenders - I would walk 500 Miles (I also love the Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies cover) </DIV></DIV>That song was The Proclaimers, a one-hit wonder, not The Pretenders, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

While a lot of the songs people listed I enjoy, some of them just don't come as raw beauty to me. In particular, I'm going to call out the people listing "The Joker." It's a fun song that I love to sing along to, but it's not beautiful.

A few of the ones I consider beautiful:

Vast - Touched
Radiohead - Exit Music (for a film)
Alice in Chains - Nutshell
Moby feat. Sinead O'Connor - Harbour
Smashing Pumpkins - For Martha
Ben Folds Five - Evaporated

Now; here's my list:

[5] Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond (part 1+2) (on the "Whish you were here") | this makes about 30 minutes of music
[4] Micheal Penn - Macy day parade (Godzilla soundrack)
[3] Selig - Knocking on heaven's door (Knoking on heaven's door soundrack)
[2] Goo goo Dolls - Iris (City of angels soundtrack)
[1] Dido - Closer (Bonustrack) (On the "Life for rent") | this song just makes me shiver. I'ts plain simple, easy to play, and so grazy beautiful; my dear.
