Jesus H. Christ, this game is intense. And I'm not talking about some pussy game of Counter-Strike here, I mean f**king intense. Everything you've heard from the reviews seems to be pretty much 100% solid fact: this game will scare the piss out of you. id set out to create an action-packed horror video game, and they've done just that. Don't expect the sort of gameplay depth you got in System Shock or Resident Evil, because this game wasn't made with innovative gameplay in mind. It was made to scare you witless. All the elements come together so well, it's almost flawless in atmosphere. I'm glad I kept low expectations, because I've just been blown away. This is a pure-bred FPS of the highest calibur, and could only have come from id. Half-Life 2's gonna have to pull a very large rabbit out of it's hat to beat this.

I'd rather not spoil the experience by describing it to you, so I'll just say this. Take the advice id have given you. Turn the lights off, lock the door, turn the sound all the way up, and play alone. I can't even being to imagine how this game plays with a top of the line system.

I'm running it on medium settings at 800x600. The first few levels have a large amount of detail, and as such some heavy fps drops occur here. But later on, things smooth out ok. But for some reason, when cut scenes occur, my fps is flawless, yet when I can move around again (the same area), my fps drops. Odd really. Don't expect it to run well and look as good as it does in the screenshots, because it won't. Doom 3 is a good excuse to upgrade.

I've just played it at a friends house and I have to agree with you for the most part, Kage. The thing about it that bothers me though is how plentiful the health, armor, and ammo seem to be. you can go berserk in every firefight and never run out of ammo, or be too far from a powerup. I prefer games (like system shock) that keep you on the ragged edge in terms of equipment. it just adds a whole new element of desperation and contributes enormously to a frightening atmosphere. However this is a small quibble, if you have the time, money, and system for it, you have no excuse but to go out and get it right now!

Ack. You beat me to it! I was plannin on starting this post

Everything in Doom3 is absolutely awesome. Graphics, gameply, guns, sound, atmosphere... there a few annoyting things which might just give HL2 the advantage it needs (assuming valve doesn't screw it up).

1. Why do I stop running when I change direction?

2. Come on! Atleast when boss battles hit in DOOM, they didn't throw you in tiny cramped up room! (I'm at the "spider boss", first one in the game).

3. Monsters pull a lot of incredibly cheap tricks, and there isn't enough health to go around (that is unless you wanna save everytime you move 6 feet  )

BTW, how high do you have Doom3 cranked? I got mine set for max, pretty much evertyhing, but anti-aliasing is off, and I had to drop my res to 1280x1024.

I have almost the same setup as Kage.. but a P4 1.3... it is quite likely to be the scariest game ever.. and its so action packed.. and when the lights go off.. omaI!!!

I suggest you go out and get it... and you does include CampaignJunkie!!!!

The shadows and lighting really do it all.

It's out: just check out the not-so-active countdown timer on their website. Dont know why they didn't release it in UK at the same time, the only effect a staggered release could have is increased piracy.

Not out in the UK as they'll probably want to release throughout Europe at the same time, which means they have to have it translated and ready to release simultaneously - which might add a week or two to the release date

Multi player is sorta like Quake 3, only there is 100X detail (you can turn off lights and interact with just about everything), and yes it is mappable, from what Ive read you use the radiant editor.

Rants about D3
OMFG this game is sick it does hold up to all expectations and more, and it will scare you s***less, even without the sound up high (if I turned it up any higher I get kicked out.... must wait till everyone is gone) Just alone the lighting effects are a materpiece, it looks REAL!! BTW im rnning it at 1280x1024 med. detail..... Ive tried it at ultra high at 1600x1200 but it would lag when monsters attacked, AND I REPEAT do not trust D3 to set the level of detail, it put me @ 600X800 on my 9800pro when I clicked the button  . In anycase D3 is something not to be missed by anyone.

I thought Doom 3 used an editor that was a part of the game i.e. you load it up as you're playing.

Here's a little trick that'll boost your fps dramatically. In the base folder, load up the config file, find the line called "seta image_cacheMegs" and change the setting to the amount of system memory you have. It might be a bit jittery when first loading up and shutting down the game, but in-between your fps should increase by a large amount.

I am now able to play at high quality at 1280x1024 with noticeably better FPS counts than I did when playing at medium quality at 800x600. I also happened to have Kazaa and Azureus open at the same time. Insane.

Sorry, Half-Life 2 has to be RELEASED before you can say that

I'm enjoying DOOM 3, but I'm a little disappointed in some ways. It's a bit too repetitive, linear, and claustrophobic for my tastes (especially since I'm claustrophobic in real life to some degree). I think HL2 will be superior if Valve can reach their goals with it, because it's going to push gameplay in new directions, rather than just graphics. But hopefully D3 will keep us busy/scared s**tless until then lol. One really nice thing about D3, though, is the intuitive interation with computer panels etc., all done without a 'use' button.

I'll say this: playing it with the lights on and the sound on normal volume, it isn't half special. Playing it with headphones on in pitch black, where you can really hear all the beauty of the sound (and considering all the lighting work, I was shocked at the sound quality), it is a better-than-film experience. Walk around on Ultra settings for a while too, you'll see what the game is really supposed to be.

I didn't like it until I saw a guy moving from one side of the room to the other, and watched the shadows cycle over the veins in his hand. That's f**king quality.

Save up for the X800...i already ordered the X800 XT, it still has to be released. As for HL2 vs D3 lets wait till the game is out before we make any guesses, but I agree with Jinx the gameplay with in HL2 will be its superior hold over D3, D3 has out of this world graphics, but I lose that sence when Im fighting the monsters, its just a shoot-em-up type of game, with a little interaction (exploding barels). As for HL2 will allow you to interact with just about everything and use it as a weapon (picking up a washing machine and throwing it at a combine solder). But as for now im going to enjoy D3 because I know HL2 will be "sick", but D3 is "sick" NOW!

I would expect no less, seeing as they had Trent Reznor working on the sound.

The amount being in mb..correct? And is it that plus the space you set aside on you hardrive also, or is it just you RAM amount?

Trent Reznor isn't exactly what I'd call the best game music guy on the planet... He CAN do good music, because hey, he DID do the "intro demo music" to the original Quake, which by all means kicked ass. I WOULD however like to know what happened to the original guy who did the original music for DOOM. His moody music.... really isn't that moody :\

And while were at it, I'd like to know what happened to John Romero

You mean the guy who ripped off Pantera, Alice In Chains and Metallica songs?

I find that Trent Reznor is a very talented musician, and is certainly experienced in creating the sort of jarring sound a game like Doom 3 demands.

I'll stick to AVP2. Much scarier IMO, better gameplay and doesn't rely on flashy graphics to get its audience.

I'm just saying that all Doom3 appears to be is an engine show off. And
IMO it doesn't even look fantastic. Yeah sure there's nifty lighting
effects, but everything just looks like plastic for godsake. They
could've halved the poly counts and added some decent shaders like HL2
and it'd have looked 10x better.

The game is godawful.
