I was sitting at the end of my exam today and this idea came across my
head. Why dont we snarkpitters make our own mod, and i dont just mean a
few maps for HL2. You see we have loads of mappers, plenty of modelers,
enough 2d artists and i think we have a few coders. I havent got any
ideas for a mod but we could throw a few ideas around as for a theme
etc. If a few good ideas come up, with proberly will happen, we could
set up a poll as to what theme we will go with.

Ive set up a poll just to see if anyone will actually think about
joining the mod if it happened. Also if it was to go through we would
have to choose a reliable project manager as i fell i could not handle
it myself.

So the question for the poll:

Would you enter the mod and if so what possition would you take?

Due to the limited number of poll options i have combined some of the options.

the same general idea has been kicking around in my head for a while now, and no doubt has occured to more than a few other regulars. a full mod would be cool, but maybe a little too ambitious as a starting point.

i'd say that using our various strengths to focus on making a map [or set of maps] for an existing mod would give a much better return for the effort put in.

I would only be good for mapping, but I think this is a great idea. But preferably after the contest.

Well have to see if any coders wish to join otherwise it proberly will be just a set of maps for a mod.

As for my idea i watched the Aliens vs predator film earlier and thought that a game
with a similar theme would be quite fun, where the aliens start of as a
hatchling and they have to hunt down a marine and attatch themself to
it. Once this happens the marine dies giving birth to the real alien
which can then go around hunting the rest of the marines and to kill
them they have to destrol their base/spawn point.

The marines just have to hunt the aliens down and kill the queen
alien(was that what it was called?) so it cannot make any eggs. They
could possibly get upgrades from amount of kills and the aliens can
walk on walls, jump really high, are very powerful and could possibly
eat the marines to regain health.

I do believe there was an Aliens vs Predator game but it didnt have
some of these features. Thats my best idea but i expect there will be
some better ideas from other members.

we could all add an idea for a feature that we want to see, and throw it all at whoever offers themselves up as the sacrificial coder.

natus wants a mobile strider cannon, and i want conc grenades, a la tfc.

Yeah, my ideas abit big for a mostly mapping community based mod, I
would like to see drivable vehicles with passengers/turrets like seen
in games like UT2004, dunno how easily i can be coded but would be a
first for a hl2 mod.

Umm... as I love community projects, I would become a mapper. I am not
so good in programming, so I cannot take that responsibility. Perhaps I
could become a webdesigner ... (lot of experience in that area) aswell.

And, umm... today I am going to start studying (hard) XSI... so logically, I should be a below-average modeller aswell

I guess I'd be most valuable as a coder, there are plenty of mappers here better than me ready to commit to this project. I doubt I'd be able to find the time tho...

Can fit in some mapping if I'm given some sort of theme or aim to go
for. Unfortunately, not a vast amount as I'm very busy, but still
do-able.

well i have some fun ideas. Ninjas there has to be ninjas. The Snark
mod could be like Pirates vs. Ninjas. And the pirates have oldy time
pistols and swords. and the ninjas have like throwing stars and a
sword. and ninjas can be like super jumping. That would give some
mappers a opportunity to make a map that couldcombine them. Lie make
the connection how they met. That mod would be interesting.

I'd join as a mapper once I got HL2, probably wouldn't get too much done since I'm so lazy, but you'd probably get a nice-looking WIP screen.

Heh why not work together and make a map for the competition
It is an interesting idea but a vast majority are mappers ranging from ok to pro.

I'm sure this could work well provided people stop saying it will be cool and actually make it cool

I am going to be brutally honest here, so please bear with me.

Although pirates vs. ninjas is vaguely original, I would rather gnaw my
own hand off than play that sort of thing. Maybe it's just me
(actually, it's almost definitely just me), but I look at it this way:

Die Hard is cool. Bits of Star Wars are cool. Rugrats are certainly not
cool. If you have an excess quantity of mappers and are doing a cartoon
pirates vs. ninjas mod, I'll volunteer to be the first to go I'm afraid.

Sorry to be so damn boring/cynical/whatever, but this really isn't my sort of thing.

Been thinking about a Die Hard mod just recently Loco, always though it
would make for a cool idea. Not sure how well it would work
mulitplayer, but it would be great single player.

Which reminds me, the second half of this year I will be building a
basic mod for my major graphic design project. How did I convince my
lecturers to let me make a game for a graphic design course you might
ask, well I'm sure some of you could figure it out  . Anyway, long -
short is I will be calling on this community for advice at verious
points in the not too distant future, so heads up.

yeah, as much as it hurts, but that's the truth. Without coders you cannot even dream about calling it "mod"...

Perhaps, if we could get some coders, we would be able to create a
killer Single Player mod (don't know the topic, though, but I believe
something surrealistic would be cool).

So... think about it... 20 maps are enough for a MP mod at first (if
one mapper would create one map), but SP requires a lot more. And I
suggest to do something connected with combines...

But again.. right now it's only a dream, we NEED at least 1 coder,
Andrei is right, and the more the merrier. My C++ skills are bad, so I
am not in as a coder. I know couple C++ pro's but they are not in
snarkpit

Well if we get a coder what would everyone prefer, a simgle player or
multiplayer mod as this wll narrow down some ideas. I reakon we should
go for multiplayer as it would be easier to code.

As for ideas, so far i like the ideas for concs especially if we can
get conc jumps working, i also like th idea of a sniper and portable
strider gun.

I don't wanna sound negative, but I don't think pirates vs ninja is such a great idea: they come from two incompatible worlds... (pirates as in pirates of the carribean?). I was thinking more about a sci fi mod, with giant antlions or something like that; maybe with an obscure touch, more violent and bloody...

Well, whatever is the theme, I think I can help u with the design of weapons, costumes, aliens, architectures, etc...

I personally wouldn't join, since I haven't HL2, nor am I a
particularly competent mapper. At a push, however, I probably could do
conceptual art for modelling around, and perhaps as a (again
conceptually) puzzle designer (a much overlooked feature of games).

However I'm pleased to see that Quaver has the maturity to leave the
role of project manager open for other people, since its normally "I
have this great idea for a mod, everyone else make it to my
specification and ill be the manager"

Organisation-wise if experienced mappers were do deal with the main
architecture, and then passed their portion of the project on to
several newbies for texture alignment, dirtying it up, etc (the
equivelent of the Korean workers who do the in between frames in
cartoon cells etc. ). it could work quite well.

However, I'm notoriously unreliable for informal things, so unless its a serious organised project with deadlines etc. I won't throw my hat in the ring.

Pirates vs Ninjas? That's the crappiest idea i've heard yet! How could
I have missed it? And why the hell do we need a story? Look at
counter-strike -- It's one of the most popular mods in the world and it
lacks any storyline. When I go online to play something, I don't give a
rat's ass about storyline; I want RPGs, blood, gore and explosions.

i love pirates vs ninjas but NOT in a hl2 mod, think about it, how
would it look, ninjas jumping around and throwing shurikens at pirates
out on the big sea.

its true that this is funny in a flash movie or comic, but i dont think
it will turn out to be a very action packed or funny gameplay.

Ok, instead of pirates vs ninjas, how about like its a space themed
kinda thing. Where theres the humans and the aliens. The aliens would
have to be creative though. and maps would range from space stations,
to alien planets. We could f**k with the physics alot too. Outer space
would be fun to play in.

It would be nice if the aliens had didffernt guns then the humans too.
Humans have like grappling hooks, pistols, bazookas (oh jeez), sniper
rifles. Aliens could have laser guns, plasma rifles, and plasma
grenades (halo 2 style).

Either that or something that invlves the ghetto or the mafia. if we
went with the ghetto we could have like two differnt gangs as teams.
Instead of like the regular sounds like "follow me" and "go, go, go" it
could be like "Yo, geet ova here" and "git your punk ass ova there!".
thatd be interesting.

The mafia one would be hard to pull off, the mafia has no one to fight...

But back to the alien vs human idea, thatd be awesome if the humans had
jet packs and the aliens had mega jump powers. Id like to see someone
make a alien army base, how they would design it.

Let me know if those ideas are crap or good. I have more...

While the humans vs aliens thing is fairly unoriginal (AVP, natural
selection, Hostile Waters, Incoming, Duke Nukem - all of them - and many many more), the Mafia theme sounds like an
interesting idea but, like you said, the mafia theme has limitations.
Perhaps the russian mafia (molotovs, mosin nagants etc) vs the italian
mafia (tommy guns, colts etc)?

Im the only one so far to vote "Other[sound/website/project manager]".
Mainly because i am a realy crap mapper and it would be like having a
great map, and then all a sudden you walk into a killbox.

Not brilliant i would say, im ok at sound can edit kind off and do
minor things, as for project manager (lol im 15, that awnsers it for
you). Website i am very basic, although i do know a good website mate
but i think that Lep is probably more suited to that.

Also noticed no one has voted for coding, maybe we dont have any or they arnt voting/reading.

A while ago I suggested remaking HL1DM for HL2, and I still think we should even though valve are making it. It would be easy to make, you can use alot of content from HL1 and up the polys and pixels (which isn't hard) and we wouldn't have to pay for it. My current understanding is that only silver and gold members of steam can get HL1DM for source.
