18 is considered adulthood. legal sex starts at 16, but other things
like a crime record, driving a car, etc begin at 18. (renting a car is
only allowed at 21 i think).

Have a nice one FF, dont get too drunk

I take offense to this comment. You make it sound like people have none prior to 18.

I realize that when you are young you often fail to detect such things but when you reach my age your clarity crystallizes a bit.

You have far more rights before 18 than after I assure you. Far more.

I apologize for allowing my manners to degrade. This is a birthday thread, and not mine to confiscate for personal reasons.

I'm sorry.

Happy b-day, FF.

Not quite sure about that. The way I see it, you have to take less responsibility for your actions before you're 18 than after. I'm not sure what rights a 17 y.o. could have that an adult doesn't.

I suggest that you begin a new thread and not hijack this one then.

The fact that neither of you detect your error in perception illustrates the need for such a thread clearly enough IMO to warrant one.

Apparently neither of you are old enough to know exactly what "rights" are.

<b style="font-style: italic;">2</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> something to which one has a just claim: as <b style="font-style: italic;">a</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> the power or privilege to which one is justly entitled

That's the pertinant definition taken from m-w.com. I don't
really think you lose any rights as you get older, you just gain new
ones. (The right to drive, the right to drink, the right to smoke, the right to marry.. etc.)

But I understand the general idea of what you were saying.
Obviously the halcyon days of childhood are something everyone's too
young to appreciate at the time. The lack of responsibility and
carefree days are something that I'm already starting to miss, not that
I have many new responsibilities, but I'm getting there.

I think a better word to use would be "freedom."

<br style="font-style: italic;">
<b style="font-style: italic;">c</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous <<i style="font-style: italic;">freedom</i> from care>

In that sense, we have more freedom in childhood, but still less rights.

Forceflow, you will forgive the hijacking, wont you?

Yes, I agree the sentence seems to make more sense when you replace "right" with "freedom".
The fact that neither of you detect your error in perception
illustrates the need for such a thread clearly enough IMO to warrant
one.
And tone it down a bit. Perception is relative by definition so just because someone
sees something differently than you do doesn't mean their perception is erroneous or inferior to yours.

That's why I always ctrl+c my longer replies before pressing submit/send. You should do the same.

And when you say we confuse "rights" with "freedom", do you mean
something like "the right of free speech" and "the freedom to say what
you want"? It's the only connection my pathetic brain can make ATM.

Rights are something you are born with, they are not generally granted to you. That said, some do arrive upon certain stages of your life.

Freedoms are something that is granted to you.

You do not have the right to have sex at age 18, or any age for that matter. You have the freedom to have sex unmolested by the law at age 18 in most places, but thats assuming the partner you are having it with is consenting.

You have the right to deny someone sex. THATS a right.

I could go into indepth detail about the distinctions between the two concepts but this is neither the place nor the time.

there is a distinct difference between the two however and I am sorry to say this but the difference becomes clearer when you are subjected to them for longer periods of time, hence older people feel differently about them.

18 is a milestone. having rights, thats not one of them.

oh, and thanks for the avatar. I cannot see them so I will have to take your word that it looks good.

In the states I think it varies from state to state but generally its about 16 when you can get a permit and 17 or 18 for a full license.

In certain instances, you can apply for a hardship license at 13 or 14. You have to be in a bad way such as both parents are incapacitated in some way. Say, father dead and mother stroked out. At least thats my understanding on ages for driving.

BTW, driving is a privilege in the United States. You have no right to drive.

Now I am going to assume that you at least google searched prior to posting but just in case. I also am aware that you said "everywhere you been". That could mean, one state or all 50 but I am going to assume that its less than 5 or so since I know what I posted to be near accurate.

http://www.wvdot.com/6_motorists/dmv/6g1_licenses.htm
http://www.dor.state.mo.us/mvdl/drivers/license.htm
http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/geninfo.html

These are just a quick scan in google for minimum ages for drivers licenses that I did.

These three at lease are close to my post.

For the record. I have commercial class "A" licenses and am aware of most driving laws in the USA because my job depends on my knowing them. Not state specific like drunk driving fines and such, more traffic fines that a commercial license deals with due to scale houses and port of entry duties.

In my travels, I have had to know minimum ages because commercial licenses require a certain age for issuance. In most states its 21, but some its as high as 25. I do not need to know minimum ages for permits and such persay, but its on the same page most times so I do notice.

In other words, I would not have posted, if I were not pretty damned sure of my reply holding up to closer scrutiny.

Dude the websites you just linked to confirm what I said. An intermediate license is not a learner's permit, it is exactly like a regular license except for a couple minor restrictions.

Apples/Oranges.

If its restricted, its not a real license. Period.

Unless, you were referring to eye wear?

I will look deeper, but whether its designated "learners" or not, it still amounts to the same thing. Its not a true license.

[EDIT]

I cannot even locate Hardship licenses anywhere that do not deal with people whom have lost their licenses for some other reason.

Anyway, its all semantics. It does look like 16 is the line of distinction.

Whether its a permit or license.

Up here in Kanata, I believe that at 15 you get the ability to drive
with a licensed driver in the passenger seat. At 16 you can take
the test for a full license.

A learners permit allows you to drive ONLY when accompanied by someone else. An intermediate license lets you drive by yourself.

The restrictions on the intermediate license are basically 2 things: you can't drive from 2 AM to 5 AM and you cant have more than 3 other ppl under 25 in your car (except family members). Other than that its just as powerful as a regular license.

Basically a learners permit is for learning (not a license at all), and the intermediate license is for actually driving, with a few minor restrictions.

It's 16 everywhere. If it's younger there are laws that allow that. Like, you can get licensed at 14 under certain circumstances. (Some of which could be the fact that there is no one in most of the state.)
