He said new rights. I don't see anything wrong with that statement.

I suggest that you begin a new thread and not hijack this one then.
The fact that neither of you detect your error in perception illustrates the need for such a thread clearly enough IMO to warrant one.
Apparently neither of you are old enough to know exactly what "rights" are.

<b style="font-style: italic;">2</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> something to which one has a just claim: as <b style="font-style: italic;">a</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> the power or privilege to which one is justly entitled
That's the pertinant definition taken from m-w.com. I don't
really think you lose any rights as you get older, you just gain new
ones. (The right to drive, the right to drink, the right to smoke, the right to marry.. etc.)
But I understand the general idea of what you were saying.
Obviously the halcyon days of childhood are something everyone's too
young to appreciate at the time. The lack of responsibility and
carefree days are something that I'm already starting to miss, not that
I have many new responsibilities, but I'm getting there.
I think a better word to use would be "freedom."
<br style="font-style: italic;">
<b style="font-style: italic;">c</b> <b style="font-style: italic;">:</b> the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous <<i style="font-style: italic;">freedom</i> from care>
In that sense, we have more freedom in childhood, but still less rights.
Forceflow, you will forgive the hijacking, wont you?

I cannot even begin to convey how mad I am. I lost an entire post. Not one of those itty-bitty things but a grand expose of information that they make movies of.
I don't know for sure what happen, but it has to have been something to do with Snarkpit.

That's why I always ctrl+c my longer replies before pressing submit/send. You should do the same.
And when you say we confuse "rights" with "freedom", do you mean
something like "the right of free speech" and "the freedom to say what
you want"? It's the only connection my pathetic brain can make ATM.

Rights are something you are born with, they are not generally granted to you. That said, some do arrive upon certain stages of your life.
Freedoms are something that is granted to you.
You do not have the right to have sex at age 18, or any age for that matter. You have the freedom to have sex unmolested by the law at age 18 in most places, but thats assuming the partner you are having it with is consenting.
You have the right to deny someone sex. THATS a right.
I could go into indepth detail about the distinctions between the two concepts but this is neither the place nor the time.
there is a distinct difference between the two however and I am sorry to say this but the difference becomes clearer when you are subjected to them for longer periods of time, hence older people feel differently about them.
18 is a milestone. having rights, thats not one of them.
oh, and thanks for the avatar. I cannot see them so I will have to take your word that it looks good.

Happy birthday, you big man you.
It seems so long ago when I was eighteen. Well, it is a long time ago.

oh for a minute i thought you translated that with a Yoda translator
Nah translators are mostly good for seperate words. with some puzzling
you can understand the second sentence though. In the first one he just
asked if FF would go for his drivers licence any time soon or not.

In the states I think it varies from state to state but generally its about 16 when you can get a permit and 17 or 18 for a full license.
In certain instances, you can apply for a hardship license at 13 or 14. You have to be in a bad way such as both parents are incapacitated in some way. Say, father dead and mother stroked out. At least thats my understanding on ages for driving.
BTW, driving is a privilege in the United States. You have no right to drive.

Apples/Oranges.
If its restricted, its not a real license. Period.
Unless, you were referring to eye wear?
I will look deeper, but whether its designated "learners" or not, it still amounts to the same thing. Its not a true license.
[EDIT]
I cannot even locate Hardship licenses anywhere that do not deal with people whom have lost their licenses for some other reason.
Anyway, its all semantics. It does look like 16 is the line of distinction.
Whether its a permit or license.

Up here in Kanata, I believe that at 15 you get the ability to drive
with a licensed driver in the passenger seat. At 16 you can take
the test for a full license.

We seem to have reached an impasse on our viewpoints Maze. You seem determined to add more value to the word intermediate than I. So be it.

My friend from Arkansas has had a license since he was 14. In
Connecticut you can get a license at 16, same with New Jersey (I think).

It's 16 everywhere. If it's younger there are laws that allow that. Like, you can get licensed at 14 under certain circumstances. (Some of which could be the fact that there is no one in most of the state.)
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
