Thoughts?
It's pretty good, as long as you weren't expecting more than a gorgeous
20 minute Combine fight. I like the commentary system - Robin Walker's
voice is completely different than what I imagined.
Only problem I've had is the game locking up after a while with a "memory could not be read" error. Beware!

The point of "Lost Coast" isn't the gameplay. It's a
technological demo that happens to have some combat. In fact, I
wasn't expecting any fighting at all. I was just interested in
the scenary and checking out the new engine. To be honest, I was
a bit annoyed by the combine.
I very much enjoy the commentary. I found them very informative,
and they really enhance my appreciation for the technical aspect of the
rendering process.
I took some screenshots. As far as the aesthetics, I was actually
expecting a bit more from Valve. The water looks even more
gorgeous, but I think some textures do not work well with HDR.
And the distant fog effect is not perfected yet.
Overall, I was quite thrilled. I am just glad that my machine
could handle the engine. I was given a warning that my specs
weren't up to par, but luckily the game ran without a hitch.

Since I lack the shaders and such to use HDR ... period. I thought it was okay.
Wish I had the money to do an upgrade.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

As free 'lost levels' go this doesn't hold a candle to Uplink. Still, it's cool

I enjoyed it very much, especially the commentary! The ones about game
concept rather than technology give people (particularly mappers,
aspiring developers, etc) some insight into what goes into making
single player games and maps fun. Thats a good thing. This has even
inspired me to make a single player map or maybe even a series of maps
for HL2!
I say bravo! I think it was quite well done for what it is, a tech
demo. I think people will get POed at Valve for taking sooooo long on
something sooooo short and stupid. But then again thats the typical
reaction of a lot of gamers (especially the vocal 12-year-olds) to
ANYTHING Valve does.

Zip is corrupt and/or empty.
Check it.

Did anyone else seem to have a sort of god-mode while playing this? I
wouldn't take damage from the combine or anything the entire level.
Possibly a glitch? I didn't set it that way I swear!

I assume with the release of Lost Coast we get HDR in HL2 and the SDK, no?

no, it won't be added to HL2 as it supposedly requires map specific things and nobody is going to remake all the HL2SP maps just for some bright lights

[sidenote]Wil5on, an Athlon 64 3000 is below 2 Ghz. Clock speed is 1.8 Ghz, I believe, but they're not checking for pipelining and stuff, so don't worry. It'll run. [/sidenote]
If your specs are too low, then HDR isn't activated at all and this level blows.

BTW, extra points
for Valve for finally settling the Catholic-orthodox conflict by
creating the ultimate church; a church of both religions.
No, seriously.

You know, as of yet no one has said. How big of a download are we talking about?
I'd be willing to commit a dozen nights or so.

It's less if you have HL2 and DOD:S assets on your computer already (from what I hear).

So now the question is. I assume this is a Steam option you choose like installing a new game file?
OK, I will look for it. I only hope that Steam has a decent resume cause I cannot tie up my phone for a week solid.

i don't know what else, if anything, would be downloaded, but the lostcoast folder that gets created weighs in at just under 60mb. the dl might even be less than that, if it comes in compressed form before being extracted to that folder.

I will have to update you guys when its completed but, upon firing up Steam and after its updates completed (almost 10 megs again  ) I clicked on the link to begin the download. I was at 88% complete from the beginning so I am assuming it is borrowing components from elsewhere. At 89% it was approximately 10 megs already downloaded so I am assuming that I need an additional 110 megs yet.
54 minutes and 14 megs complete so far. Isn't 56k grand.
