Yesterday, when starting Steam I noticed the interfaces and platform updates finally arrived. I must say I like the changes. The games window now has some order to it again. Also the whole thing seems to load a bit faster (maybe I'm just making this up, though). I like the new default skins. The military green was getting old.

From the day they introduced the rounded edges for the Steam windows I knew they'd be gone in the next redesign. I mean rounded edges? Who needs them. It's so 2005.

Simple changes mostly, but I like them!

i knew someone had to start this topic soon or later.

i'm testing if it loads faster... and i think it does. they said steam will update in background, not in startup, so it will definitively load faster.

about the skin, i like it too. it was time for a change!

I found Hammer crashing, Steam acting up and all and when I restarted it, it took it's time to update. Then I saw the new interface and all. Nice, I think it's an improvement, but did they had to disturb me for that?

I cannot even get steam to turn on, let alone update. I click the icon and it blinks once then nada.

I dunno...I liked the rounded edges. I mean, it's just basically gone back to a cleaner looking version of the way it was before now. But it still looks very, very, very, nice!

Yeah the new look is pretty nice, but i agree that some things seem to be erroring more. On Hammer i get these purple and red lines which go from the corners of entities to somewhere off the grid and im not sure what thats for... its just messey.

My best bet is that the servers are stuffed. That would mean that what usually works with Steam when it refuses to update itself didn't really work this time.

Is Hammer for Source screwed up again? This is why I quit Source mapping to begin with. Having your primary tool screwed up or buggy for weeks on end sort of puts a damper on things.

Wish to hell they would make Hammer a stand-alone program.

Hammer crashed on me too, for the first time in a long time. but it was also the first time i tried clipping a sphere. I am assuming it was that, but u think something so simple wouldn't do crash it.
The sdk stat window still looks the same. Think they forgot it?

Good update, less is always more.

Congratulations to Valve for creating the first online instant gaming
store. It's brilliant, now that some of the other publishers are
distributing their products through it.

Question: I heard that the applaunch numbers have changed. Could this have caused my steam to bork out?

Anywho, how many others steam is still down?

Guest pass = free 3-day trial. You can send it to an existing account or an e-mail adress (with instructions on how to download steam and create an account).

It allows people to try out the full game.

3-day trial? Full game? What games does this apply to, surely no single-player games, right? That wouldn't work at all since nearly every single sp game can be finished in under 3 days if you put some effort into it.

But honestly, I just thought more about whether if I get a guest pass for DOD:S, for example (and use it) this means I cannot guest-pass play any other game for the coming 6 months. Which, since I already did 2 free weeks for DOD:S means I shouldn't have taken the DOD:S and should have waited for another game that sounds more interesting instead.

I spotted something interesting in Steam Update News today: A note to European Steam users: we'll be adding support for five new languages
soon in Steam, Counter-Strike: Source, and Day of Defeat: Source. Those
languages are Norwegian, Swedish, Dutch, Danish, and Finnish.

Considering that Finnish is often ignored language in games this came to me as a bit of a shock. But then again there must be a sizeable amount of Steam accounts in this country for Valve to add support for our language(there are only 6 million people in the whole world who are able speak it). I'm damn certain though that I'll be able to get some good laughs out of the wrongly translated parts(I assume that they'll use some program to translate the strings and due to the complexity of Finnish language those translations are mostly wrong).

I don't even know what's wrong with mine. I didn't have a problem until this update as I was on Steam the day before this happened.

Anyways, when Steam went to connect me it loads nearly all the way and then I get this message: Platform Error: bad module 'Servers/serverbrowser.dll', not loading.

I replaced that .dll with the same file off of another computer that my Steam account was on, and I still had no luck. Anyone have an idea?

Hilarious, your double team.

The full FAQ states through all answers that a guest pass can be sent
to one person, and is usable within a certain limit of days - clearly
outlined as being activated from when it is started/activated.

Read the page I posted again, even with English as a second language, the purview of a guest pass is clearly explained.

I scanned through the Steam forums to no avail. yeah some had a similar condition, but no one pinned down the fix.

I then tried to repair the program through the control panel.. No go.
I then tried downloading Steam again and allowing it to fix it... It updated then quit, again.

I have now un-installed it, and used a registry cleaner to remove the last bits. Wish me luck as I re-install.

[EDIT] GOD f**kING DAMMIT!
Steam still refuses.

That sounds very sucky. You sure it's not a firewall blocking Steam? I had a lot of troubles with the Windows firewall, which seems to be more restrictive and seemingly auto-activates itself even when my other (proper) firewall is just out of date with it's updates. I marked HL2 as a friendly program but it still blocked all its Internet traffic every few seconds resulting in horrendous lags. It's a bit different but I searched for months to find a fix for this and would have never thought it was the windows firewall (which I set up to run Steam and HL2 freely).

just something to consider...

Steam worked fine until the update last week. I reinstalled it and it updated. BUT after it finished, the program still borked out.

Could a windows firewall allow it to update, but not load?

How do I check the windows firewall setting?

[EDIT] I turned off windows firewall. Steam still borked.

It's a shield-shaped icon in the control panel called "security center".

Whenever Steam.exe is updated (changed), the security settings for it are reset (to unknown/dangerous) I think. At least I think so. Also check and double-check your own firewall, of course. It sounds very much like a firewall problem (which doesn't mean it is  ).

UPDATE:
OK this is what I have done, in no particular order...
 • Tried to patch Steam.
 • Tried reinstalling over the previous Steam.
 • Uninstalled Steam.
 • Re-installed Steam.
 • Uninstalled Zone Alarm.
 • Disconnected my modem and used another.
 • Disconnected my router.
 • Shut off Windows Firewall.
 • Searched the Steam forums.
All to no avail.
I currently am running with FireFox, no router and no firewalls. My machine is wide open and still Steam fails to load.

Anyone have any clues????

I'm not sure whether this was included in the already done list but:

In zoneAlarm, open the main window, click "Program control" on the left, then select the "Programs" tab. There should be a huge list already but you can also add programs manually.

See if that list has one (or two) entries for Steam.exe. Klick "custom" and set trusted level to "super", klick and allow all kinds of access. There can be two entries for 1 program, so make sure they're all allowed and open. Maybe restart windows, also.

I had a few problem with these program control settings.

PS: Make sure virus and firewall definitions are updated in zoneAlarm. I think Windows Firewall runs almost mandatory if there's anything not up to date.

good luck.
