OK, question #1

If Teflon is a no stick substance, then how do they stick it to the inside of your skillets?

I believe Lep did a project on Teflon back in A-Level. I think its the way in which teflon is applied or made. I think only 1 side is super smooth, the other is rougher allowing it to be applied to items/fixed with heat etc.

Light blue means you are alone. Dark blue means you are part of a team/party.

Only those that lead into Breen's office.

There's one thing that's been driving me up the wall these last few days.
Anyone here know a little something about japanese grammar? I know
there must be some multilingual people here ready to share their wisdom
with me.

Ignoring the
inevitable (yet non-critical) mistakes that i've managed to pack in
this 2 word fraze, is it
correct to use the "wa" particle in the second sentence given that both
sentences can be understood individually? I doubt I should use "ga"
(perhaps after nihongo, as to mark the topic, but that's another story)
and "wo" seems inappropriate in this case.

On Teflon:
  • Teflon is the DuPont trade name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
  • PTFE is "nonstick" because it is both very hydrophobic and chemically inert. If you were to prepare the surface of the aluminum pan in such a way that it was lipophilic, the PTFE would stick quite nicely to it. However, I doubt it is as simple as that. There is probably a fairly sophisticated chemical process that is used. You could for instance coat the surface with a different alkene, and then polymerize the TFE right onto the surface.
  • 2000 degrees C. is almost hot enough to BOIL aluminum, let alone melt or burn it. Besides, PTFE will decompose at much lower temperatures anyway.

I was being funny and serious about the toilets really. I was always under the impression that it was the jets that caused the vortex to appear. I mean, every toilet has these pointing in a certain direction.

The bigger question would be: Does the drains of sinks and bathtubs form a vortex in correlation to the toilet theory?

Sure. Didn't you know? Dads above the Equator lift the right butt cheek and Dads below the equator lift the left cheek. Thereby causing wind to move in a given direction or path. Usually straight to Mommy who whacks the Dad for smelling up the place. Women tend to not notice the flow of the wind, just its consistency.

Yeah, I was wrong at least according to several online articles I've found. I just did a couple of experiments in my sink, and found that the whirlpool direction is determined by the initial conditions of the basin rather than any other overriding force.

The rotation of weather systems and ocean currents on the other hand are governed by conservation of angular momentum.

The direction of flow of water is mainly dependent on the shape of the bowl, and other toilet-specific factors. The Coriolis force acts differently depending on your latitude, but its so small as to not make a noticable effect.
Can animals like dogs and cats "see" what's on a television when they look at it? Or is their brain and sense of sight so different that they can't make sense of it?
Depends on the animal, and the television. CRT TVs have an effective refresh rate of about 30Hz (60Hz interlaced), which to us appears as a moving picture since humans see motion instead of still pictures above around 20Hz. Some animals will need a higher refresh rate to see motion, depending on the animal, they might see a series of still pictures, or more likely a strobing effect. An LCD display will not have the strobing effect. Many animals will see colour differently, as the colour receptors in their eyes are tuned to different frequencies.

It has to do with english so I doubt anyone will figure it out.

Where did the letter 'H' come from?

In Greek, the Daddy of Latin, which is the Daddy of English(Germanic
languages are Mommy), "h" looked like an apostrophe('), it wasn't a real
letter, it was more of a puncuation.

There are phi: User posted image and theta: User posted image, "ph" and "th", respectively, but there's no real "h", only that semi-useless apostrophe.

In Latin, there's "ph" and "th", but "h" itself isn't used too much, so
it must've been a new letter, and an unimportant one at that.

So how did this letter gain
it's esteemed position
in the English language
?

Unfortunately, we DO harbor terrorists. We just do not know who they are until they strike.

AH! a linguistics question!

The letter H is the anglicisation of the KH sound in the Indo-european language family. the KH sound is that guttural throat sound that is found in German as a CH (like the word buch), in Hebrew as a X(transliterated to a kh, ch or h), in Russian as a X (transliterated to "Kh"). In greek it's called Chi and it too looks like X.

Many people pronounce the German CH as an english SH, but although it may sound that way it's actually a "hawking a loogie" sound made in the back of the throat.

I have recorded an example of this in the Russian word Хорошо. Spelt in English, it's Khorosho.

  • Can the airwaves get TOO FULL of all the information we send through them with our cell phones and WiFi and all of our radios and stuff? What happens when it does? does the sky start falling?
  • Where did Gypsies come from in the first place? before they started wandering around in wagons way back in the day.
  • Who, or what culture, invented the violin.
  • what's the difference between CAT5 and CAT5e cable?
  • Why are asians eyes like that? From an evoltionist point of view, i mean.

Gypsies are trading people from the Slavic end of Europe originally -
Romania, Serbia, Belarus etc. They are most probably descended from a
mix of Slavic settlers from Russia mixed with Varangian (vikings)
traders.

This is just a guess however, but I'd definitely put them down as East
Europeans. In turn, if you go further back than say 800/900 AD, it's
also likely they find some roots from modern day Iran or central Asia,
too.

From Wikipedias introduction:
The Roma people (singular Rom; sometimes Rroma, Rrom) are an ethnic
group mostly living in Europe. They are believed to have originated
from various nomadic peoples that travelled north of the deserts of
northwestern India and the many mountainous valleys of Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Today, Roma do not form a majority in any state.

Many Roma speak some form of Romany, a language closely related to the
Indo-European languages of the Iranian plateau and more specifically to
Sanskrit and its descendent Indo-Aryan languages found in the Indian
Subcontinent [1]. However, most Roma speak the dominant language of the
region they live in.

But why do only ASIANS have the epicanthic fold in thier eyes and not people native to mexico and africa?

I was right though? All those people exist or existed, and did have those movements of population, trust me

On another note, it's probably worth saying that the notion of "gypsy"
has extended far beyond it's links with the Roma tribes. Now it is used
to describe any travelling peoples, and usually in a derogatory sense.
I find it unlikely that a gypsy in the US is a real gypsy (likewise in
the UK), but are more likely descended from the always hated Irish
tinker families.

Andrei: That is the slavic end of Europe? People were moving in the
times of Kievan Rus/Muscovy in and around Serbia, Ukraine, Romania -
and were Slavs. Hence Gypsies are slavs, mixed with Iranian.

Andrei: That is the slavic end of Europe? People were moving in the
times of Kievan Rus/Muscovy in and around Serbia, Ukraine, Romania -
and were Slavs. Hence Gypsies are slavs, mixed with Iranian.
AFAIK, gypsies came to this area centuries after the slavic migrations
that followed the withdraw of the roman legions in 271 AD.

I have different theory, which I founded after carefully studying
several books that were supposed to explain why things are the way they
are.

Gypsies come from the lost kingdom of Atlantis, after having arrived
there from Troy by floating across the sea on the Trojan horse. After
stealing everything that wasn't bolted to the ground, they migrated to
europe with the aid of secret nazi flying saucers, but were captured by
the soviets and were dumped into the volcanoes around London, thus
releasing their souls, who were unfortunately captured by alien
starships (that look like Boeing 707s with rocket engines), which
originated from the Zeta Reticuli starsystem.

You know, some people actually believe some of the bulls**t I presented
in my theory. The church of Scientology (repeat the name a couple of
times until the implications of having a "church" of "science" settle
in) actually believe that the ruler of some foreign galaxy had the
members of another intelligent race all put aboard starships which
resembled (human passenger) planes with rocket engines
The Douglas DC-8,
said to be an exact copy of Xenu's [evil space ruler] spaceships, seats a maximum of 250
people and has a payload of only around 40?50,000 kg, depending on the
specific model.
and had them
dumped into the volcanoes in Hawaii (according to one version of the
story; a different version states that they we're blown-up by hydrogen
bombs), and then ordered that their souls
be sucked up by special ships. But some of the souls escaped and
inhabited the existing creatures on earth. I'm not kidding here, they
really believe this stuff.

The founder of this religion is
L. Ron Hubbard, a SF novel writer, of all things. And a very poor one, judging by the premise of his "religion".

ok here are a few.

A.) If the big bang theory is correct, what started the reaction and what came before the big bang?

B.) how does "The Void" work in HL2? how can a game create
infinit space? Could you really no-clip into the void and go on
forever?

Can the airwaves get TOO FULL of all the information we send through them with our cell phones and WiFi and all of our radios and stuff? What happens when it does? does the sky start falling?
This is dependant on the radio equipment used. The frequencies attainable are infinite, however, because of various tolerances and variations in equipment there is a finite set of possible frequencies that can be sent and received successfully. As manufacturing techniques improve, the set can possible become larger, but never infinite. Using multiplexing, it is possible to have multiple signals transmitted on the same frequency, which helps.
what's the difference between CAT5 and CAT5e cable?
Cat5e is an improved version of Cat5, which allows higher transfer speeds and longer cable lengths. Most Cat5 cables sold today are Cat5e.
Why are asians eyes like that? From an evoltionist point of view, i mean
This is called an epicanthal fold. It is beleived to be a natural defense against the weather in central Asia (extreme cold and extreme light). It can also be found in some groups of native Americans, and the Khoisans of south Africa.
If the big bang theory is correct, what started the reaction and what came before the big bang?
Thats the big question.
how does "The Void" work in HL2? how can a game create infinit space? Could you really no-clip into the void and go on forever?
The game does not actually create an infinite space. The map is, at its simplest, a collection of vectors. What the player sees is calculated from more vectors describing where the player is and what the player is seeing. When you see the void, it just means you cant see anything at that point. If you noclip outside the map, you could keep going until your vector became too large for the game engine to handle, causing an overflow. When this happens, the game could clip your movement so you cant move far enough to cause an overflow, it could wrap the coordinate values so you appear on the other side of the map, or it could just overflow and crash.

I had that post waiting for most of today... hope we dont exceed daily bandwidth again anytime soon.

Can animals like dogs and cats "see" what's on a television when they look at it? Or is their brain and sense of sight so different that they can't make sense of it?
related: self-consciousness. to illustrate: when babies look in a mirror they see a playmate. it's only when they grow older that they know it's themselves. you can test this by drawing a dot on their forehead.

my question: what makes people, dolphins and monkeys have self-consciousness, whereas other animals do not? it's not the size of the brain (e.g. elephants vs dolphins, ...) so what is it?
These words are my diaries screaming out loud

My Questions:
  • Where did the Cedars of Lebanon go?
A lot of them were cut down to build boats, since the Phoenicians (our ancestors) were among the best sailors of the Mediterranean sea. But we still have some cedar forests in Tannourine, Arz, and Barouk mountains. Good to know that there's someone (other than) me interested in the fate of our national symbol!

My question: Do maple trees grow in a mediterranean climate?

Physically, it has something to do with the amount of wrinkles on the cranium

Evolutionarily, monkeys and dolphins need social behavior(parts of
"self-conciousness") for their closely-knitted social groups, which
help them survive in the wild.

I haven't taken psych. yet, so I'm just speculating. ::o:

<DIV class=quotetitle>? quoting DrGlass</DIV>
<DIV class=quotetext>A.) If the big bang theory is correct, what started the reaction and what came before the big bang?</DIV></DIV>

As for what came before, it can be explained this way. Without sentient beings and life, all things technically last forever since matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Before life existed, there was no beginning OR end to anything, and thus no way to measure time, thus no time.

As for what caused the Big Bang? Answer: God.

I've noclipped in games for a LONG time. they crash. in some games you start back in the other side and go zooming through the level again.

Yes, maple trees can grow just about anywhere that oak trees can grow. Maple trees need a fair amount of water and can deal with very high and very low temperatures. So go ahead and grow some maples, make some syrup. I will send you some maple seedlings if you send me some cedars from lebanon.

No one really knows what gives us our sense of self. It is one of the greatest questions for mankind and has been left unanswered by every philosopher in history. Although Fishy's avatar is funny, it does have some quotes from some philosophers trying to answer these questions.
We have a sense of self, because somehow we know that we exist, we know that we ARE. But, what is it to BE?

my next question: What is it that makes us BE? or what is it to BE? If we ceased to know that we existed, would we cease to exist? Socrates said "I think therefore i AM."

Oh, and Carmen Sandiego was on "a big old junk in china" according to the song. Apparently, she was kinda slutty.
