I know with you Americans you guys are all rich and stuff so you can literally ask for one and it will be given to you on a silver platter,
........ Yes, the president of Sony flies in and delivers the new PS3 directly to me, while I lay on my bed of money and eat grapes from the hands of servant. How about throwing a few more insulting generalizations out there?

Anyway... there will always be people who prefer a certain format for their gaming - PC, Console, Pen and Paper; that is just fine. Variety is the spice of life, right?

Yeah, my taste doesnt lie with fantasy, thats that. And I meant what I said in a joky sort of way, not serisiously. I just mean I live out in the sticks in the depth of a African jungle looking after 5 elephants and 9 lions, in a starving village next to a disease infested river.

What are people looking forward too?

Me:

Okami
Persona 3
Super Paper Mario (This sounds really great)
Twilight Princess
Gears of War (If it comes out on PC  )
And, of course, Crysis.
(You could probably through in the bulk of the Wii lineup too  I hope Nintendo names a price soon. A tag as low as $130 would be amazing. Buy a Wii and DS cheaper than a 360 ... buy a Wii, DS, and 360 all cheaper than a PS3)

Also, KFS, I think, unless you played the demo on the floor at E3, if you saw the ign videos or something, those seem very unrepresentational of the game in regards to gameplay, because of the way that person plays. I know that was an reviewer, for example, because he described everything he tried to do (lure guards over to the jeep and shoot the tank to make it explode, or whatever)
But if you noticed, most people don't play FPS' like that. He just stood there and got shot and shot in return. Boring. I doubt the full gameplay is like that. The ship deck did look sort of boring in that there isn't much going on, but, it may be an introduction level or something, I thought the giant robot alien monster was awesome enough. But who knows? (I could be completly wrong, of course)

I think the largest downside to Crysis is the OS it'll require: Vista
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Vista :O
Im not gonna get vista untill I get a new PC (In a good few years time) because bying a OS by itself cost the same amount as a good graphics card.

I watched a an off screen video of red steel and while the game does look fun the animations were nothing like the trailer shown on the official website. They used ragdoll physics which was a little disapointing. I think I might end up buying an Xbox 360. So far it has the largest and most promising line up of games out of all 3 consoles. I'm also extremely excited about the new Turok game coming out.

P.S. Does anyone remember the Phantom console that was suppose to come out? I laugh when I think about that thing. I feel sorry for anyone who put investments into the company that was develloping the thing.

I played Red STeel this morning....

The line, just to get into the Nintendo area was 2.5 hours long  . Then, once inside, it was a 30-45 min wait to play any of the games. I picked Red Steel, and in hindsight wish I would have picked Metroid (I really wanted to try an fps with the Wii).

I expected the controlls to feel somewhat intuitive, but I was wrong. Character movement was controlled by the left 'Nunchuck', while aiming was controlled with the wand. This felt somewhat akward, and I certainly didn't get to any level of accuracy or adequate control within the 5 minutes I got to play. I was constantly losing my reticule and getting generally screwed up between movement and aim. I found myself wildly swinging my Wii around when trying to target guys.

The sword fighting was somewhat cool (although too short) - right stick controlled swing, left stick allowed you to block by holding up your arm (left controller has some type of gyroscope also). I wish there would have been more sword fighting, as it seemed to be the most interesting mechanic.

If I had to choose right now, between playign that game with a normal controller, or the Wii, i would have to go with the standard controller. Of course it's really hard for me to judge things based on such short demo. Who knows, the aiming mechanic could possibly be tweaked and end up feeling very good.. Personally, I would have loved to up the movement speed and tone down the aiming sensitivity.

I'll still be buying the system and trying out all the games.

Hopefully we are planning to port Determinance to Wii, so you'll get a proper freeform swordfighting game on there eventually.

... I picked Red Steel, and in hindsight wish I would have picked Metroid ...
A lot of reviews have said that Red Steel was very awkward and not polished (they were out yesteday too) ... I wish you would have chosen Metroid as well, since, personally, I'm pretty excited about it (and I'd like to hear more hands on news). Also, the things I've heard about how you use the grapple beam sounds awesome.

No one has to wait much longer to play many of these games.

I've heard some other sword games announced for Wii ... one that caught my interest, which every geek on the planet wanted to happen is a Star Wars LightSaber battle type game. It's official.

I think they also said they wanted to work with more freeframe movement rather than specific "moves". Which, if done right would be incredible. Not blocking properly could but you in a terrible position to retaliate and things like that. It'd be some cool stuff.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Get real guys. Those who are in charge, make the rules. ITS THAT SIMPLE.

Its not your place to question. Its not even your place to make excuses or even have an opinion about it. You just accept until you reach a point in your life where YOU can make the rules.

And you two often wonder why I go on this "Age" tangent. I get so tired of reading text about the short sighted old people. Get your own place. Pay for everything then have some punk come over and tell you whats wrong with your place. Then get back to us and tell us how you dealt with it.

And here I thought you two were grown now.

I burns my ass to read ungrateful children talk s**t. You both should be ashamed and Nickel, buy a f**king TV and stop being a f**king baby about your parents home.

I am still fuming.. Such disrespect and acting so caviler about it as if, the parents are the one with the issue/problem.

Kids these days, or any days for that matter make me wanna slap them silly.

I just hope, I actually wish them to have children just.... like....themselves.

My comment wasn't meant in respect to them not wanting it hooked up their TV, more the viewpoint that games are some sort of evil ("polluting the TV with Nintendo").

And no, I wouldn't follow any rule just because my parents set it. Face it - some rules are f**king ridiculous, and simply demand to be questioned. I'm not ungreatful to my parents - I think the world of them both and I'm thankful for the life they've provided for me - but then they don't make stupid, ignorant rules. I probably wouldn't feel the same if they demanded me in at 8pm every evening as a teenager, or only allowed me an hour a day on the computer, or didn't let me play games consoles because they are "polluting the TV".

How about a rule that says they have to take any beatings you give them? That they have to give you sexual gratification? That they have to put up with the ancient, worn, too-small clothing because you'd rather spend your hard earned cash on booze, or drugs, or new PC bits? That they aren't allowed to be friends with the kids of different ethnicity or religious beliefs? Kids shouldn't question the rules eh?

Kids should respect their parents, but it works both ways. Treat your kids with all the respect of a dog, allowing no free will or decisions that contrast to your own, and they'll just come to resent you. Allow them their own interests, SUPPORT them in those interests. Thats what my parents have done every step of the way, and they would have no matter what my interests had been.

My kids want to hook up a console to the TV for a while? Go for it guys, I'll play you at Smash Brothers.

The thread seems to have derailed somewhat (again),

So I was standing in starbucks, when two fellows came in wearing event passes to E3.We chatted up a bit about the vendors booths, who's job it was to assemble and then dis-assemble them. Then in the same trip I get on the freeway only to be passed by 3 big black vans with "E3 guest bus" written on the sides. Oh I got to go 2 years in a row, but I've lost my ticket contact. So close and yet so far.

Woe is me.

So Finger, or Squirrel. Overall consensus on this years E3 seems to be

Sony-bad

Microsoft-good

Console games- good

PC games- so so?

Is this what I am gleening from your comments?

From my limited viewpoint, everybody had SOME good stuff to show. I definately wouldn't say Sony = bad. Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, God of War2, Resistance:fall of man, Guitar Heros 2, Okami, all looked great.

Maybe I am getting a little jaded in my old age, but It just seems harder and harder to find those 'wow' games. My general impression of E3 (this year and last), is that we are generally flooded by a sea of mediocre games. I walk away both years feeling a little overwhelmed by the hundreds of titles competing with very similar themes, mechanics, art styles.

Also, E3 pissed me off this year. It was so much harder to see the big games. Microsoft, Nintendo, and SOny each had these showcases behind closed doors, where their primo demos were shown. I would have loved to see Gears of War, but after waiting 3 hours to play 1 Nintendo title, I pretty much said 'screw it' and went home. Overall, I don't think I really enjoy being crammed into this claustraphobic environment, elbowing through people just to get a peek at something I can rent or buy a few months down the road.

My highlight of E306.... watching Fatal1ty challenge people to a 1on1 Q4 deathmatch game. Not 1 person fragged him. Not even once. That was fun.... I just wish they would do the same with HLDM!!

Certainly finger wouldn't be one to call the PS3 bad anyway, what with working at Insomniac and all. Anyway, my judgments are about as solid as anyone else's who watched online; sadly we're one of those not in California Activision studios that can only afford to send a handful of people per year... maybe next year.

But yeah, I wouldn't say Sony looked 'bad' per se, but I don't think they held up comparatively to Microsoft and Nintendo, and I think looking at the combined price of those two systems equaling or possibly undercutting a ps3 could spell trouble for them. If they run into supply troubles (which they say they won't, but it's not like the ps2 was in abundance at launch), it's going to be hard for people to pass up the extensive 360 library and supply (not to mention user base) or the price and creativity appeal of the Wii. But there's no way they're going to fall behind this generation; they could sell a cardboard box with "Playstation 3" on the front and a pile of dog poo inside and still out-sell everyone... but I imagine we'll see the gap close a bit this round and maybe a new leader emerge next round. Maybe. We'll see.

Duncan, I can rest comfortably with 2 thoughts.

You have foresight, I have hindsight. We both know which has more percentile chance of being the most accurate.

I, plan on going no where. I, have known you for a while now. I, trust that when you finally see my point, that you will courageously say so. No matter when in the future this revelation occurs.

Till then, subject dropped.

Back on topic: What location or locations do they have these displays? Is E3 just a California event?

Microsoft is kicking some serious ass this E3 with the Xbox 360. So far that console seems to have the largest and most promising game line up yet. There have also been some really cool presentations for Xbox Live including the online play in Warhammer: Online between the guys on PC and Xbox 360. Rainbow 6: Las Vegas, Dead Rising, Stranglehold, Halo 3, Turok, Huxley, Bioshock, Gears of War, Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway, Mass Effect, and Splinter Cell Double Agent are some games to look forward to for the 360. I seriously doubted the 360 when it was first launched but now seeing what's coming out for it it'll be very hard for me not to buy one.

Don't worry Orpheus, there's a ton of stuff coming out for PC aswell. However most of the big stuff is going to require you to buy a new PC. If you plan to play Crysis or UT 2007 then you'll probably need one of those robot cities from The Matrix to run the games.

The Heavy Rain thing was both impressive and disappointing in my opinion. Beautiful in general, and the animation was superb, but her face just looked awful. The corners of her mouth in particular

Orph - I think the kids and the parents are always gonna disagree on that topic really  I stand by my view, but I agree that arguing over it isn't gonna get us anywhere.

Yes the mouth has some problems. Mostly I think its a shadowing problem. You see they have mapped out all the facial muscles, but theres something missing, like a minute shadowing which occurs around the mouth and teeth when a person talks. This lack of shadowing makes for a rigid and unreal facial expression. You notice that they have gotten some pretty believable emoting from the lower mouth and chin muscles. Its the upper lip where the problem lies.

still though, damn fine tech demo.

From the look of it it seems they motion captured everything VERY well ... except her mouth. They should have done that when getting the voice over.

The hair was physics.

it looks like they planned on animating the lips on their own without motion capture ... and they just haven't gotten to it or something.

Other than that it was really nice. My animation major buddies tell me working with motion capture as an animator is a nightmare.

While it is very nice to look at and seems like an interesting game (if it really is one!) The movement isn't really all that impressive. You've been seeing this type of work in films for a while. Most notably in recent years King Kong.

It's nice to see it work in more games besides Metal Gear Solid, but doesn't make it incredibly impressive. If it weren't motion captured ... that'd be a different story.

Still cool though.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Didn't really pay much attention to E3 this year for some reason. I'm pretty stoked about ET: Quake Wars, from the trailers it looks like a sort of "Battlfield Quake." I honestly think that's one of the best online FPS ideas ever. I just hope the net code makes it playable for FPS fans who like accuracy, not just vehicles and big maps...

And I think Heavy Rain was just a tech demo.

Speaking of tech-demo graphics. Anyone heared of the next game from the creators of Max Payne? It also has a guy's name in the title ( "Alan Wake" if I remember correctly) and seems to be a very open, adventure/horror game (like Trespasser done well and with a good story). I expected to see something in the E3 news this year.

Alan Wake is only coming to XBox 360 and Windows Vista. Shame really, I
would've liked to play it, but nothing is going to make me get Vista. I
rather change to Linux than put that piece of s**t on my computer...
And I have never been in the habit of getting any consoles, although I

they ruined PC gaming).

lol I remember Trespasser. That game was so bad. It was fun to turn on god mode and beat the dinosaurs to death with the baseball bat.

The Alan Wake trailer didn't tell me anything about the game. I hate trailers like that  . Nice graphics though.

OTT:
Vista in its current form is like ME, really really buggy. But I'm at least hoping it will be better than XP (not that there's a whole lot wrong with XP SP2). Just turn off the Aero theme. Aero = useless crap. Same with Luna. (I run the windows classic theme btw)

unreal.Go to Gametrailers.com and look up Heavy Rain. Outside links
apparently are verboten.

Aside from the mouth issues, I have to say I was very impressed, for one reason.

I actually felt very uncomfortable towards the end of the trailer,
during the part where she had the gun to her head. I actually put
my hand over the screen in case she decided to blow her brains out, and
I've never had that discomfort while playing/watching a videogame
before. Usually, videogame violence seems like a joke, whereas
movie violence makes me squeemish. This game trailer finally
bridged the emotinonal gap between games and movies for me. It's
a direction that I believe games have been travelling for years now,
but this is the first trailer that actually ellicited a cinemaesque
human-response from me.

I felt the same when the bad guy shot the hostage in the head in the intro of Soldier of Fortune. I think it has more to do with story and direction than tech detail.

Don't know, I didn't feel it. The voice sounded all off and she looked incredibly bad.

I have been thoroughly unimpressed.

re: Heavy Rain - Technically, it has very high production values, and the artists clearly have talent... but something's off, I'm not sure what it is, but it makes the woman's face incredibly disturbing. She's like a reanimated corpse, something not quite human but also something not quite digital either. I saw another forum refer to the uncanny valley, which I agree with.

So to sum up: I think it looks really great and convincing at some parts (mostly when she's crying and such), but looks terrible during the rest (especially the audition scenes, ugh!).

You've hit the nail on the head. The 'uncanny valley' syndrome is very obvious with alot of the 'next gen' games and even animated films like the first Final Fantasy movie. Honestly, I think this kind of problem will eventually be dealt with in the same fashion that say, textures, are dealt with nowdays. At some point, people realized that hand drawing realistic textures was just not the optimal approach - hence, photo-reference. People got good at manipulating raw image of actual things. Games will probably end up doing the same thing, with the little nuances of emotion being captured from real actors and mapped onto 3d characters (similar to the way Kong was created). Right now, there are some procedural methods, like the way Valve did their lip-sync, but even that is far from perfect. Imagine if you could project even the tiniest facial twitch from your face, to a 3d model. This is the kind of technology we need to bridge the uncanny valley. In the end, though, it all comes down to actors or animators giving performances and breathing life into the characters - the way it always has.

Btw - I was moved by this performance and am excited to see what becomes of the project. Indigo Prophecy was a very interesting game.

I don't even think this is uncanny valley - the mouth is just terribly done. Valve's stuff looked way more natural and was actually timed correctly - I think if they just up the mouth detail to match the jump on the character and actually bother syncing the damn thing it could turn out looking really nice. The rest of the content has just enough of a digital style to it that it looked great - I froze one frame where she wasn't talking and it looked fantastic.

...of course, knowing this is from the indigo prophecy guys makes me lose all interest - only game (save for battlefield 2) in the last 10 years or however long that I've wanted to dump in the trash, and that was only partway into the pretentious "I'm your director for your interactive movie, look at me!" tutorial. :-\

Did you play any of the Matrix games?

If you want a terrible game that came out the same year: Brothers in Arms was a piece of s**t. Really beautiful game(s), god awful game mechanics. How many shots to the head does it really take to kill a Nazi? Seriously. I know it's less than 6. I would throw that game in the trash, light the trash on fire, then piss it out before I even thought of selling Indigo Prophecy.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

See, Brothers in Arms I loved, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment. Though they've taken care of that pesky shooting issue for this one.

Didn't touch any of the Matrix games, so that worked out well, too.
