Its been really quiet on snarkpit lately, I don't think anybody could dis-agree with that. So I thought I would create this thread to maybe start things off again.

Basically, what you have to do is post an image of your desktop (yes again! ), your desk (or what I call "crib") and list your computer specs.

I'll start.

I already protested about use of the word "crib" being an MTV thing... :razz: And I still can't get over "448mb RAM". I'd post a picture of my desk but it's a horrendous tip so i'll pass.

How about we post about video games. I'll start:

The current console generation sucks. The 360 and the ps3 crib too much from PCs and cannibalize the PC market instead of creating their own, and since they've turned away from the unique aspects of console gaming they weaken the console industry as well. They get none of the strengths of the two industries but all of the weaknesses.

The Wii is gimmick garbage whose success encourages Nintendo to continue to rehash the same s**t over and over. The vast majority of the games released for the system are as deep as a puddle and about as interesting as one as well. This dominating success ensures that the next generation will copy as much from the Wii's design philosophies as possible which is not a good thing.

For the PC, the ever increasing graphics treadmill and the utter lack of diversification of visual or gameplay advancement beyond texture resolution and higher polygon models stifles creativity and variety. This focus also shuts out most modders and level designers, as games have simply become too complex for the casual modder to work with and create something worthwhile, which was the lifeblood of the industry for decades.

So what we're left with is console gaming reaching its pinnacle with the SNES and N64, games as complex as ones on my f**king Intellivision from 1982, and the PC industry willingly choking itself to death.

Not that I don't agree. I'm really not a big fan of electronic games anymore, and I can't decide if Yak is right, or if I've just grown out of it.

However I'd like to disagree. I think games are getting much more advanced and better and more fun. I can't believe I am defending the wii, but the thing was revolutionary. Yes, there are alot of rubbish games on the wii (just like there is with any console, and the pc!) but some people do enjoy these games and people have different tastes.

The xbox 360 is an awesome console, and lets put the red ring of death aside. It is flawless with a range of great games and an unbeatable (forget about the cost of it) online system.

The PS3 however is not a great console and doesn't have many great games either. There is nothing really new that would be useful for the console. People will disagree with me however, and thats one great thing about gaming, the different opinions, there is always things to discuss, people play games differently and so on. It makes things all to interesting.

And games are deffinetly moving in the direction of custom content. The ability for users to make custom content for games is becoming more and more valuable.

Now I'm sorry, I don't understand your love for vintage consoles, and some people seem to have a passion for them, you can stay with your SNES and N64 consoles until the wires inside rot, or you can get with the times, keep up, and enjoy the wide range of games available and where gaming is going in the future.

So what about them pictures guys? It doesn't matter if your desk is messy, I'm sure your crib is very practical gwil. Practicality > looks. And... if you need a print screen of it saying "you have 448mb ram", I can do that now :smile: .

How the f**k is xbl unbeatable, it doesn't even have dedicated servers.
It's way overpriced for the service you get (lol downtime) and let's not start talking about the playerbase.
And how can you say the xbox 360 is flawless, and then bash the ps3, when all you do is push away the bad things about the 360.

Thats quite true, however, if we put that problem aside, its a pretty good console. And Microsoft did the right thing to fix it and pay all shipping costs for free. And there fitting the newer more recent consoles with more cooling equipment such as a second gpu fan.

As for current video game consoles... I don't own any. I'm not going to buy a x box for a 20" off collar tv. The thing that turns me off the most about current consoles is that the controllers are wireless.
Im a fps guy anyway. Pc is best for those.

They aren't. An easy example is Halo, less advanced than your average PC shooter, which inspired a bunch of Halo knockoffs that are even worse (Resistance comes to mind) and changed the market making other fps's reduce complexity in order to compete (Rainbow Six to Vegas). How about System Shock 2 to Bioshock? Deus Ex to Invisible War? Baldur's Gate to Mass Effect? Mechwarrior 2 to Mech Assault?

Many genres have died while the current trend is blending genres together, reducing distinctions and depth between games even more.

The problem with the motion controller is that there is nothing revolutionary about it. It's not accurate enough to work as anything other than a mouse you point at the screen with gestures to mimic specific movements. Shaking the controller instead of pressing the X button is not a revolution.

Lots of people like boring casual games, WoW PVE, and pirating games, that doesn't make it good or acceptable when they affect other aspects of the industry.

It's not a passion for old stuff, it's just that console gaming has not advanced beyond that era and in many respects has declined. I'll go with the major Nintendo console franchises since that's where I have most experience. Every one except Smash Brothers peaked on the SNES or 64. Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Mario on the SNES. Starfox, Mario Kart on the 64. 64 also still has the best console shooter Goldeneye, despite the deluge of fps's released these days.

If gaming's future is forseeable through the current console generation, then it is dark times ahead indeed.

My only hope is that one day, there will be an "independent" scene, not so much like the hyper-alternative experimental game-lab games but closer to the golden age, 90ies style of games. With 3-4 year development cycles becoming standard and an average mainsteam studio employing 100 people, the 15-people/1 year scale for games of the late 90ies should be considered a "small" project today. I don't need the production value of a LotR movie. SS2's character models were bad even for it's time. DX1's were even worse. But I didn't mind.

If you produce a game like SS2, DX1 or X-Com today, without the modern-time shader-fancy graphics and high-polygon models... shouldn't there be a niche of oldschool game nerds like us to make projects like these economically feasible even today? I would say so.

because, when the snes and 64 were teh newest they were innovational, not in their controllors, but in the types of games you could play on them, there were few shooters b/c those have been and always will be better with a keyboard and mouse [don't argue with me over that point because I will refuse to listen]

the types of games the consoles had, like the zeldas, anything mario, secret of mana [which i still hold to be the best rpg ever created] made those systems, because their gameplay was so amazing you could spend weeks on a game by yourself without getting bored

consoles now have gotten away from this, they are trying to rival the pc, they are flaunting the same games PC does, but failing at it, like i've said so many times before; if Halo was only PC then it would have failed, because of the lack of thought its play requires and the fact that that play itself is mediocre. If Halo had not come out on the xbox, the xbox would have failed b/c all of its other games were s**t, Halo succeeded because the best shooter anyone who stuck to consoles had seen until then was Goldeneye on the N64

Halo multi player was popular for a reason, and it wasn't because it was the only fps on the x box. Evan with the lack of variety in weapons it was still fun. And weather any of you want to admit it or not there was plenty of cover in the maps.

I don't think that PC gamers will ever understand the Halo games. Dude the games where over hyped for a reason. Halo 2 got hype because of Halo 1, and if Halo 2 was sooo terrible like everybody keeps saying, than Halo 3 wouldn't have received the hype it got.

And to be honest, Dexus Ex was a great game, but its not like "ZOMGZ dis game is da best eva!!!!1" to me. I think that really the first games you experience set the standards for whats good and what you like.

I grew up with the Nintendo 64 (Banjo kazooie/Tooie, Goldeneye, mario kart, super mario....). Than I started pc gaming with age of empires. OMG, I so love age of empires it dominates over any rts, I still play it online, any of you'll have it, I'd love to have a game. Just private message me and I'll tell you my hamachi server. The first shooter I really liked was Halo, it didn't really interest me until I finished the last level and it was so awesome. Goldeneye was fun, but Halo was fun and had an awesome story, the story was really doing it for me. And than it went from there....

@Fatstrings: I like the crib man :wink: . Didn't realise you could have 4ghz of ram :S

my first PC game was CS 1.0, from there it was half life as well as the Blizzard Trifecto, because of this and the fact that I grew up with the snes and have played many a nes game means that I will never relinquish the fps to consoles unless they start coming with keyboards and mice, and if people buy them then instead of building pc's i'll cut em :razz:

Yea, there are quite a few N64 gems I missed. Basically, everything that Rare produced is awesome. What a shame they got bought by Microsoft. If Rare was still with Nintendo, the Wii (and game cube) would be twice as good.

if u don't have any protection how do u know your not infected? I pick up bad stuff browsing reputable sites. You don't have to be sifting through porn to pick up something malicious. I sagest u install something. (avg or avast maybe)

I don't run an active antivirus either. I scan once every few months with ClamWin free antivirus and hijackthis though. I don't like how much CPU time active scanners take, my hi-res photoshop performance is choppy enough as it is.

I don't wanna spread panic, but the last time I "noticed" a virus, my "My Documents" folder was gone for ever and the computer didn't boot up anymore. I learned the hard way and I'm using a virus scanner ever since.

And Baron, your "crib" looks like teh future! I should get a flat screen (just one for the moment) myself. If the colours just weren't so off for the affordable models. :sad:
