I'm just curious, what are your guyses favorite movies/films at the moment and why? (No mentioning your enormous pile of ripped movies, Orph . . . slowly hands Orpheous a CD)

If you can't narrow it down to one, like the top three or something.

For me (in no particular order):
12 Monkeys
-It's a great film, it's probably, In my opinion, Brad Pitt's best role. I also make jokes with my friends about if it had a sequel lol.

The Last Samurai
- Whoa, was I surprised by this film. I expected some mundo Cruise crap, but I got an amazing story with beautiful cinematography.

Event Horizon
- Beautiful (in a film making way). This is the only movie that I have ever seen which actually scared me while I was watching it . . . great. Hopfully P. W. Anderson's filming skills will make AvP not a piece of crap, just like Resident Evil (bad story, acting, but I loved it.)

there's a million more amongst them:

The Royal Tenenbaums

Fight Club
(I'm sick of morons, not anyone here, but people I've personally met, claiming this is the best film ever, it's good, but come on.)

Punch Drunk Love

A Clockwork Orange
(shut-up that rape scene isn't that bad)

The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions
(Obviously being a lover of ther book series, I would inherently love the films, once put together correctly)

The Matrix
(I enjoyed the ones after it, Reloaded wasn't that bad once I could skip the rave . . . and Revolutions was great, but neither were even close to their predicesor, which is a completly different feel altogether, so you can't really compare them besides the fact that their in the same series, not to mention the article Simulacra and Simulation is bleeding from every pore of that film, it's even on the cover of the green book for christ sake lol)

The Big Lebowski
(Its just a great movie)

Heat
(oh man)

Okay, that's about the end of my favorites, there's a lot of older films I haven't seen yet that I'm dying to see (Scarface).

So, now it's your guy's turn.

Scarface is great stuff if you can look past the bad suits, awful sets and bad soundtrack.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
This is just amazing movie making, and will certainly go down in history as possibly the best fantasy epic made.

Monty Python And The Life of Brian
Nothing beats the scene where they all hide from the roman guards in really obvious positions (like putting a sheet over your head, stuffing your head under the table, behind the curtain, beinhd a wooden stool), and yet around 50 or so guards only find a spoon. In the place they forgot to look the first time.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail
"I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of eldeberries!"

The Matrix Trilogy
You may flame when ready

Minority Report
Great mind-twister

Blade Runner
Even better mind-twister. That Philip K. Dick eh?

Fight Club
BEST. FILM. EVER. Oh come on Crono, you were just asking for it

12 Monkies
More mind twistage. Brad Pitt is just brilliant.

Unbreakable
Another good Bruce Willis movie.

Phone Booth
Yummy 24-stylised thriller.

I'm sure there's probably around 10 times more, but that's enough for now.

Kill Bill. Oh yes, oh yes.

Lost in Translation. Bill Murray = great.

Identity. Whores don't get second chances.

Ghostworld. Funny + good.

The opening song for Ghostworld more than makes it worth a rental (the song is Jaan Pehechaan Ho, by Mohommed Rafi, if you care). The rest of it is good, in a really depressing sort of way. My 2 bits.

I forgot about the Usual Suspects. . .that movie's great as well. I'll fix the spelling mistake up there.

Real Folk Blues is amongst my favorite episodes in the Bebop series (along with Jupiter Jazz and Pierre Le Fou (I know I spelt it wrong so.)

I didn't dig Magnolia as much as Punch Drunk Love (same writer and director), although it is one film that proves Tom Cruise is a good actor, even if he's a prick.

Also, did you guys see Boondock Saints  (great as well)

Young Frankenstein - Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks at the absolute TOP of their game. The parody movie which all other parody movies aspire to be, but just can never reach.

Royal Tannenbaums - This movie just rocks hard. No movie has succeeded at making me laugh and creeping me out in quite the same way.

Reservoir Dogs - The best Tarantino film, ever. Great cast and an absolutely superb script and story. The budget-concious-yet-not-missing-a-thing feel is just ten kajillion bonus points.

Brazil - My favorite Terry Gilliam movie. 12 Monkeys is a great choice, but I prefer this one. The Lloyd Wright-esque sets, the mechanical computers, that incredible scene where they abduct Buttle... and an absolutely unconventional storyline. Takes a while to sink in just how great a film this is.

Punch-Drunk Love - PT Anderson is definitely another director I really respect. Any movie that can make Adam Sandler seem so talented obviously worked hard to get where it is. The actress playing his sister (the one we see outside of the party) did an incredible job. I love how just when it gets too serious, someone walks into a glass door. The nuances are amazing, like when Luis Guzman shows up wearing a suit, or the blurry character in the background of the supermarket scene.

Those aren't necessarily my Top top 5, but they definitely serve as a good sampling of what I like in movies.

Runner ups:

Any Christopher Guest Mockumentary
The Princess Bride
Office Space
T2: Judgement Day
Lord of the Rings
Wet Hot American Summer

Upcomers to watch out for:

Anchorman
Good Omens

Release it already!:

Martin & Orloff

Dude, Where's My Car? Gah. Even as far as stupid stoner movies, you can do better than that one. Cheech & Chong, Wayne's World, Bill & Ted (although the drugs aren't quite as explicit in the last two). Guess it's better than How High, though.

I saw American Wedding and it just seemed too slapped together. I mean, on the one hand you do have the incredible comedic talents of Eugene Levy, Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge, along with the very promising Alyson Hannigan, but instead for some reason it just seemed to focus on Sean William Scott accidentally embarassing himself while trying to impress some chick who really wasn't that great. I can't figure out why they stuck with that plotline, it just didn't have it. January's (I know some months make good girl's names, but is January really one of em?) character seemed to change every scene she was in, the rivalry between Finch and SWS seemed muted as there wasn't really any back and forth. That other friend became even more so a background prop than in the earlier movies. Another thing is a lot of the dialogue was written so that characters have temporary deafness, not being able to hear what's going on right in front of their face... But I guess high-brow adult comedy and not just a more explicit PG-13 gross-out was too much to expect.

Ghostworld is great on DVD (watching the Deleted scenes with Doug...priceless.)
Slap Shot - Classic, really funny...but maybe only if you actually play hockey.
Gladiator - Really liked this one.
The Last Samurai - Much better than I had expected.
Mortal Kombat - Always liked it for some reason, way better than the 2nd movie (1st one has actual martial arts.)
Demolition Man - A lot of sly humour, a good laugh.
Back to the Future - Great stuff.

And more I can't think of at the moment, I really should be studying

LA Confidential: I wish I could beat the crap out of women beaters too!

Fight Club: a good exploration of the consequences of fallowing an idea to the extrmity of logical thought.

Boondock Saints: Yah, kinda psycho, but admit it. you wish you could kill rapists too.

Further down the list: snatch, lock stock and two smoking barrels, bandits, the fugitive, whitness, der kreiger und die keiserin, ferris bueller's day off, father goose, operation petticoat...

I like mind-bending movies, eg. Fight Club, Unbreakable etc.

I like war movies, eg. Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now (also a mind-bender...)

THE MATRIX!!! OMG!!! The original is excellent, Reloaded wasnt as good, and I havent seen revolutions yet but I hear its worse again.

But ATM, my top 3 would have to be the LOTR trilogy, with ROTK at the top. Hopefully the extended version will include the scourging of the shire!

Revolutions is way better then Reloaded. If you like anime at all you'll love it.

I'm sick of people bashing Reloaded and thus Revolutions because of the Reloaded chip on thier shoulders.

They're not horrible movies, jesus, what about Michael Bay's movies?? They're crocks of s**t! (Thank God no one has listed a Michael Bay movie as one of their favorites . . . yet, if you're going to . . . just don't)

I love a lot of asian movies, mostly HK cinema ones but also some Japanese ones...

Young and Dangerous series
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hero
Brother
The Stormriders
Infernal Affairs
Battle Royale
The Warrior

Basically anything with Ekin Cheng or Tony Leung to be honest - Ekin is just damn cool, while Tony is a kick ass actor.

From western films, my favourites are...

LOTR Trilogy
Resident Evil (no idea why, I just really like it)
Heat
Leon
Ronin
Casino
The Matrix (both sequels are ok, but nothing as special)

I almost always enjoy watching films, I very very rarely walk away from a film without gleaming at least some entertainment from it.

How could I forget! A few from Europe...

Run Lola Run (very original)
Taxi series (insane car chases, and some funny as hell humour to boot!)
Brotherhood of the Wolf (loads of the weapons from Soul Calibur put into a film!)

ReNo- have you ever seen The Princess and the Warrior? It's by the same people who did Run Lola Run (which is damn good, too). I went in not knowing much about it, and it just mostly confused me... The scene in the hospital with her father is just too creepy for words... (Watch it, you'll know...)

You might just want to rent it... it's nowhere near as good as Run.

considering, there are just to many themes to have a fair list, anything one writes down would cheat other themes..

scary,sci-fi,drama,historical,comedy,western,ect,ect

the list is long to say the least, i am sure that everyone has favorites, don't get me wrong, so do i, but i have about 50 favorites, all for different reasons.

if i had to put one up front of them all, for its re-watchability, it would have to be "dinosaur" my grandson watches it every time he is here, and i mean WATCHES IT... as in watch,rewind,watch,rewind,watch....

we have seen it so many times, i can lip sync it, the funny thing is, i just keep watching it with him.. might be cause its with him, i dunno, but there you are

One of my other favourites is Toy Story. If you don't like that film, then you must have a heart of Stone.

any of Monty Pythons films but perhaps especially "The meaning of life"...
i got a job for a day as an extra in the meaning of life, as a zulu warrior.

dunno if anyone remembers the scene from the zulu wars, where one of the monty team (cant remember which one) wakes up in his tent to find his leg has been eaten off. he claims it's not serious, and that the leg will grow back. anyway, the intro to that scene is titled as ............."the zulu wars" (just outside glasgow)"

all the actors that were to play the zulu warriors in that scene had gone on strike after two days of torrential rain. it wasnt the rain that caused the strike though. it was because Cleese demanded to know "what one of you black bastards done the rain dance." not very bright considering they all had pointy spears with them at the time.

you wouldn't believe how much a frizzy wig, a grass skirt and some black paint can alter someones appearance. i mean, guys that i had grown up with and knew really well were like strangers to me. i had one of my mates write my name on my back, as did most of us there, because it was so confusing. (a wet finger would write through the body paint)

some of the images that i have in my head from that day i dont think will ever fade. charging down the hillside (the campsies) dressed as a zulu screaming all sorts of unmentionable battle cries. standing in a quite village boozers with half the people there dressed in the old red british uniforms, tattered and torn, slings plasters and crutches, and the other half dressed as zulus, with spears in hand and their names on their backs, all quietly supping on their pints and g+t's.

i reckon it must go down as one of the strangest days i've ever had. and i got payed 30 quid into the bargain.

oh, and it all ended up on the cutting room floor.

dunno if that's cause of the strike/union thing, or if we all just sucked as zulus. i like to think it was the former.

Alien/Aliens (not 3/4)
Apocalypse now (redux)
Back to the future trilogy
Bladerunner
Gladiator (complete copy of 'the fall of the roman empire' but still good)
Indiana Jones trilogy
Jaws
Leon
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Once Upon a Time in the West
Pulp Fiction
Seven
Star wars (not 1/2)
The italian job (not the lame 2003 remake)
The good, The bad, and The Ugly
The matrix (1st only)
The shawshank Redemption
The Usual Suspects

Looks like 'battle royale' is one to see judging from people's comments. I've got the godfather but haven't watched it yet, looks like that might have been on my list if I had seen it. I'm trying to get a taxi film, I heard they were good. Obviously I wouldn't say no to watching any of the classic action films like die hard, but they don't get on to a list of best films in my opinion

Wow, Reno, you have excelent taste.

I was thinking about putting Brotherhood of the Wolf down, but, it blows on DVD (US anyway). The director Re-Edited it after it was done in theaters to make it a love story . . . wtf.

ALso . . . . WHO SAID THE ROCK!!!! YOU MUST DIE!!!!! MICHAEL BAY IS EVIL!!!! lol sorry, I hate Michael Bay a little too much.

I forgot to put up some foreign films I enjoy as well:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (duh, Ang Lee is awesome! . . . So is Chow Yun Fat)
The Killer (was wonderfully depressing, you know, back when John Woo could actually Directed, and didn't choose no talent ass clowns like Nicholas Cage for leading roles . . .)
Thus, Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow also rule lol.

Reno, I know what you mean, I like Resident Evil too . . . but I can't figure out why. The acting is bad, the story is worse, but I loved it. However, I'm really excited about Apocalypse . . . The trailor is great: Resident Evil: Apocalypse (I know quicktime is evil, but meh.)

Lets see if this can take a different turn here . . .

How about you guys list a couple catagories instead.

Such as:
Favorite Action Movie:
Favorite Comedy:
Favorite Film:
Favorite Comic Book Movie (Damn Striaght):
Favorite Foriegn Movie/Film:
Favorite Drama (Anything other then what's previously listed:

In my opinion there is a different between a Movie and a Film. . .so if that's confusing, just ignore it.

Mined probably be (at the moment of course):

Die Hard
The Royal Tenenbaums (Rushmore, The Big Lebowski)
Fight Club (the film truly is Flawless, from a filming angle)
Either X2 or The Hulk, can't choose.
Theatrical Cut of Brotherhood of the Wolf (sigh I'll never see it again, will I? lol)
12 Monkeys, Fallen, or A Clockwork Orange at the moment.

I didn't include horror because it's not a genre in my opinion.
Anyway, have fun!
