/me downloading now.

personally, i liked all the unreal versions, they never compared to HL, but i found the smoothness of online fragging great.

the maps, never fragged as good as HL did either, but the lack of noticeable r_speed issues made up for it some.

if HL had as good an engine, with all the perks of HL, i would never have played another game again i imagine.

/wishful thinking

Just finished. All I can say is, Wow. The game was actually standable. Unlike Unreal Tournament 2003, 2004 didnt get boring or redpedtive after a short time. Some weapons have had a little upgrade in graphics, some have had big ones. The vehicles are amazing. Its really amazing how a few cars to actually assault people with can change an entire game. Sure, there is a lot of room for improvement, but overall, the game was excellent.

The Onslaught mode is definately the best thing there. The vehicles are really, really good, the weapons are a lot more well balanced and just cooler, the music is better, the loading screens are better.....dammit, where was this game when UT2003 came out?! This is the true sequel to Unreal Tournament.

[edit] :: I really want to play that space level O_O

I loved UT and UT2003 but won't be able to try this until tomorrow. I've only heard great things about it so far, even from the people who loved UT but hated 2k3. It's basically what 2k3 was supposed to be in the first place.

Not bad, not bad at all...

Everything felt more UT-like, the sniper rifle's back, the announcer doesn't suck, it runs perfectly fine on my computer, much better. This is definitely what UT2003 should have been.

The downside of course is that Halo already did the vehicle thing a little better I'd say. Control-wise the jeeps in Halo were great to use in running people down and sideswiping them and it was possible to avoid getting hit by things. Here there's too much AVRIL to make taking off with a plane any use. Once the enemy team gets close to your base you get shot outta the sky the moment you take off. I'm all for handheld AA, but that makes dogfighting less necessary. Plus airpower should be the dominant force in any futuristic portrayal of war.

This is good stuff however, and I'm tempted to actually buy this game.

PS: That DM map sucked. Nothing like blowing people away with awesome level design...

How are the vehicular physics?

I was really turned off by halo because the vehicles did not have the momentum and mass they should have.

That has been my impression of 2k4 all along, and I must say I think it has been handled pretty well. Onslaught is indeed a very cool mode, and the vehicle mayhem is nuts. But let me tell you, I cannot WAIT to get my hands on that space level with the fighters and the flying and the shooting and the fun and the joyousness.

Sadly, I think a lot of people will count this one out after being disappointed by 2K3, but I think we have a much more solid platform in particular for the modability and support that UT2K3 advertised - I could see this getting some added popularity and a much larger player base over time, so we'll see what effect that has on independent development.

Vehicle phyisc's are pretty good (IMO), When your vehicle is blown to bits, it goes flipping out of proportions, its really cool. I mean, its so awsome to see your (once) proud ship, fall flaming out of the sky, only to smack the ground and tumble, while still on fire due to a rocket  .

(Also..Spider Bots = OMFG, AWSOME!!!!!!!! Its like having a tiny army of kamikaze's!!)

2k3 was basically released to get mod developers to start working on things, unfortunately, the net compatibility was dropped due to the extreme change in the net code. UT2k3 was also made to show commercial developers the power of the Unreal Engine, and considering the s**tload of teams that have licensed it...just check UDN and that's not even a recent list. Now I know quite a bit of you feel betrayed by this, but hey, that's how things work in the gaming business.

Now onto 2k4...I f**kING HATE IT!!!!! Just Kidding

The demo is fricken sweet!!! Onslaught is just so damn much fun! I never played Halo, was never interested in it, and the horror stories of the PC port made me want it even less. So if you bitch about the vehicles being like Halo's, well that means nothing to me. Lots and lots of fun, like Battlezone 2 without the base management and a stronger FPS side. The weapons feel good so far, and keep the vehicles from being way too over powering. Spider mines...fun s**t. Assault mode is a hell of a lot more developed this time around. Now that we've seen players can handle objective based mp (RTCW/Enemy Territor), Assault mode hopefully won't be cast aside like it was in the original UT. Never been one for CTF. DM's a nice warm up, and TDM just means I have less people shooting at me. So that's how I feel about that.

I am definitely getting the Special Edition because it comes with 130 hours of VTM madness!!! Basically lessons on how to do everything with Unreal except starting the game up! The ones available for download pale in comparision to the monstrous amount on the DVD.

I am going to be UT2k4's bitch.

Sadly the spaceship level isn't in the demo, though the ton of other vehicles on the Onlaught map are keeping me quite happy.

I've found through a couple hours of online play that the vehicles have paper-thin armor. No one can last long in any vehicle without being blown out of the water. It's kinda dumb to think that the best usage of a truck armed with two seperate guns that the proper tactic is to jump out of the vehicle at the first sign of a bad guy and engage them man-to-man DM style. The physics aren't that spectacular either, as the vehicles seem to float around on the ground a bit too much. And the bots are far too accurate with guns.

Whatever, it's still fun. Not as entertaining as nonstop CTF in the Halo demo, but more fun than the Wake Island snoozefest of the BF1942 demo.

I don't how you can whine about my (legitimate) gripes regarding HL2 when you are the biggest Negative Nancy around, Cassius. Speaking of which, HL2 has vehicles too, babe

I think it's a little early to make a call on the weapon vs vehicle balancing. Speed is as important as firepower- the big advantage of the vehicles is how fast they get you around the map. And supposedly the maps in the demo are rather small compared to some of the ones in the full game. I think they are good for taking out nodes, too- especially for storming the enemy base to finish off the match.

Really? I found the vehicles last for a sufficient amount of time as long as you keep moving, especiallt the flying ones. And have you been in the Griffin tank yet? That think simply doesn't die.

Personally, I think Halo ripped off C&C's Nod Buggy, which is based of a real buggy, which is based of a jeep, which is based off a car, which is based off a carriage, which is based off a wagon, which is based off a cart, which is based off a basket which is based off a rolled up piece of cloth which is based off twigs and leaves blankets, which are based off forests, which are based off trees, which are based off flowers, which are based off algae, which are based off even more microscopic organisms, which are based off proteins, which are based off amino acids, which are based of other elements, which are based off what makes up the universe. So as we have seen, nothing is original and everything that ever existed all existed at once, and then when the last thing that existed was made at the same instant, it all instantly combusted and then something turned on time's on switch so things wouldn't exist all at once so some being could really age a good bottle of wine, to be used to along with other things to get another being pregnant so this whole mess starts over again...whew...lots of bs, but I've had 4 sodas and it's 4:45am.

They are he-fricking-uge. Don't even bother trying to get to the enemy base on foot, the match will be over by then. Vehicles are a neccessity in this mode.

yeah the onslaught map in the demo is supposed to be 'small' compared to the ones in the full game. I think the larger maps will be less spammy with 16+ people, and thus your vehicles will probably last longer as well.

The full game has the hi-res textures, too, and should look a good bit crisper.

I agree that the DM map in the demo was pretty mediocre, probably one of the poorest Unreal maps I've seen. Maybe they included it because it was small?

Leperous: not sure if you've read about that level, but the space level is an assault map. you have one team on a space station, defending it with fighters and turrets, and another trying to assault it. eventually the attacking team will board the space station for more standard combat. so it's kinda like two games in one map.

Doc, that's the price of technological advances in graphics. The new stuff and features just won't run on old cards, unfortunately. :-\\ They just don't have the power to handle what the new games and engines can throw at them, and there's really very few ways to get them to do so.

also, the system requirements for this game aren't much more than the ones from UT2k3, which is over a year old...

You don't have any legitimate gripes about HL2. Once you have the demo or the game you can justly complain all you want.

Also, let's not forget a little video game history. Valve was working on putting drivable vehicles in TF2, which was announced slightly before Halo was. So the two were being developed around the same time, which means Valve can put vehicles in HL2 without copying Halo.

But that IS my gripe, that I DON'T HAVE the game/demo!!! I just want them to get off their asses and finish the game they promised!

And as for TF2, having an idea is one thing, implementing it is another. With Halo, BF1942, & UT2k4 already out there, they've pretty much missed the boat. So what if they 'thought of it first', what matters is who's doing it and who's doing it well. I'm sorry but vaporware doesn't count  (what's sad is that I loved TFC and really wanted TF2  )

Besides, they all stole vehicles from

Combat was the s**t. I wish things were like in the Atari days, where games were about FUN, not about 'realism' and crap. Also, despite the limited game system, Atari games were all very different. Currently you have just a few cliched genres that video games distill down to it seems.

lol thanks. found it on some random avatar site. I was looking for a few good ones to add to the galleries on my own forums that I'm starting up. Still working on them, but if you want a glance:

http://www.cryotank.net/forum/

it's not game-specific, more for chatting about pop culture, etc. in general. decided to start it since me and some of the Action HL peeps like anime and wanted a place to share links and chat about stuff.

i can say from experience, that finding the right avatar is no easy task.. took me a while, but in the end i feel i succeeded..

in any case, i doubt anyone would steal it, its not fit for many..

i like your new one.. its so jinxy

[edit] as to your forums.. i helped or at least tried to help with the color scheme here at snarkpit, its very much to my liking and find it difficult to view others well.. even tho i admin PFL, and will one day soon have total control over it, i hate its color scheme and will doubtless alter it then..

the fact that its yours tho, makes it special to me, so.. i like it  in spite of the colors... it reminds me of SP a few years ago, and look how well it turned out

Well, atm the default is just "subSilver" (bleh). I like subBlack, but it has a bug in the registration screen, so I can't set it to default. You can pick it in your preferences, though, it's darker like Snarkpit's scheme. I don't want to start messing with the colors etc. just yet myself.

Christ. Is it possible for games to have vehicles without being called Halo ripoffs?

Heh, I guess Edge already covered this.
It's quite possible. However, UT2k4 has every Halo vehicle, looking damn near exactly the same.

Jinx, the difference is that I have played both 2k3 and this 2k4 garbage, and neither of them warrant my respect, really... the fact that Epic couldn't upgrade the graphics of their game without screwing over the gameplay means that they didn't know how they achieved the awesome gameplay of UT in the first place, and UT2k4 is just trash. I can play BF1942 any day of the week for that gameplay, and more.

You have neither played nor had any in-depth experience with HL2, and yet you feel it necessary to break down and cry whenever you hear its name, spouting ignorant and nonsensical 'facts' at every turn.

Holy crap, someone actually read all of that, or at least a portion of it!
