/me downloading now.
personally, i liked all the unreal versions, they never compared to HL, but i found the smoothness of online fragging great.
the maps, never fragged as good as HL did either, but the lack of noticeable r_speed issues made up for it some.
if HL had as good an engine, with all the perks of HL, i would never have played another game again i imagine.
/wishful thinking

Just finished. All I can say is, Wow. The game was actually standable. Unlike Unreal Tournament 2003, 2004 didnt get boring or redpedtive after a short time. Some weapons have had a little upgrade in graphics, some have had big ones. The vehicles are amazing. Its really amazing how a few cars to actually assault people with can change an entire game. Sure, there is a lot of room for improvement, but overall, the game was excellent.

The Onslaught mode is definately the best thing there. The vehicles are really, really good, the weapons are a lot more well balanced and just cooler, the music is better, the loading screens are better.....dammit, where was this game when UT2003 came out?! This is the true sequel to Unreal Tournament.
[edit] :: I really want to play that space level O_O

I loved UT and UT2003 but won't be able to try this until tomorrow. I've only heard great things about it so far, even from the people who loved UT but hated 2k3. It's basically what 2k3 was supposed to be in the first place.

Not bad, not bad at all...
Everything felt more UT-like, the sniper rifle's back, the announcer doesn't suck, it runs perfectly fine on my computer, much better. This is definitely what UT2003 should have been.
The downside of course is that Halo already did the vehicle thing a little better I'd say. Control-wise the jeeps in Halo were great to use in running people down and sideswiping them and it was possible to avoid getting hit by things. Here there's too much AVRIL to make taking off with a plane any use. Once the enemy team gets close to your base you get shot outta the sky the moment you take off. I'm all for handheld AA, but that makes dogfighting less necessary. Plus airpower should be the dominant force in any futuristic portrayal of war.
This is good stuff however, and I'm tempted to actually buy this game.
PS: That DM map sucked. Nothing like blowing people away with awesome level design...

How are the vehicular physics?
I was really turned off by halo because the vehicles did not have the momentum and mass they should have.

Vehicle phyisc's are pretty good (IMO), When your vehicle is blown to bits, it goes flipping out of proportions, its really cool. I mean, its so awsome to see your (once) proud ship, fall flaming out of the sky, only to smack the ground and tumble, while still on fire due to a rocket  .
(Also..Spider Bots = OMFG, AWSOME!!!!!!!! Its like having a tiny army of kamikaze's!!)

2k3 was basically released to get mod developers to start working on things, unfortunately, the net compatibility was dropped due to the extreme change in the net code. UT2k3 was also made to show commercial developers the power of the Unreal Engine, and considering the s**tload of teams that have licensed it...just check UDN and that's not even a recent list. Now I know quite a bit of you feel betrayed by this, but hey, that's how things work in the gaming business.
Now onto 2k4...I f**kING HATE IT!!!!! Just Kidding
The demo is fricken sweet!!! Onslaught is just so damn much fun! I never played Halo, was never interested in it, and the horror stories of the PC port made me want it even less. So if you bitch about the vehicles being like Halo's, well that means nothing to me. Lots and lots of fun, like Battlezone 2 without the base management and a stronger FPS side. The weapons feel good so far, and keep the vehicles from being way too over powering. Spider mines...fun s**t. Assault mode is a hell of a lot more developed this time around. Now that we've seen players can handle objective based mp (RTCW/Enemy Territor), Assault mode hopefully won't be cast aside like it was in the original UT. Never been one for CTF. DM's a nice warm up, and TDM just means I have less people shooting at me. So that's how I feel about that.
I am definitely getting the Special Edition because it comes with 130 hours of VTM madness!!! Basically lessons on how to do everything with Unreal except starting the game up! The ones available for download pale in comparision to the monstrous amount on the DVD.

I've found through a couple hours of online play that the vehicles have paper-thin armor. No one can last long in any vehicle without being blown out of the water. It's kinda dumb to think that the best usage of a truck armed with two seperate guns that the proper tactic is to jump out of the vehicle at the first sign of a bad guy and engage them man-to-man DM style. The physics aren't that spectacular either, as the vehicles seem to float around on the ground a bit too much. And the bots are far too accurate with guns.
Whatever, it's still fun. Not as entertaining as nonstop CTF in the Halo demo, but more fun than the Wake Island snoozefest of the BF1942 demo.

Personally, I think Halo ripped off C&C's Nod Buggy, which is based of a real buggy, which is based of a jeep, which is based off a car, which is based off a carriage, which is based off a wagon, which is based off a cart, which is based off a basket which is based off a rolled up piece of cloth which is based off twigs and leaves blankets, which are based off forests, which are based off trees, which are based off flowers, which are based off algae, which are based off even more microscopic organisms, which are based off proteins, which are based off amino acids, which are based of other elements, which are based off what makes up the universe. So as we have seen, nothing is original and everything that ever existed all existed at once, and then when the last thing that existed was made at the same instant, it all instantly combusted and then something turned on time's on switch so things wouldn't exist all at once so some being could really age a good bottle of wine, to be used to along with other things to get another being pregnant so this whole mess starts over again...whew...lots of bs, but I've had 4 sodas and it's 4:45am.

They are he-fricking-uge. Don't even bother trying to get to the enemy base on foot, the match will be over by then. Vehicles are a neccessity in this mode.

What's the point in that space level, surely if I wanted to do that then there are tonnes of 'proper' space games..?

Doc, that's the price of technological advances in graphics. The new stuff and features just won't run on old cards, unfortunately. :-\\ They just don't have the power to handle what the new games and engines can throw at them, and there's really very few ways to get them to do so.

what's your system, Brass? maybe you just need to upgrade your drivers or direct-x or something?
also, the system requirements for this game aren't much more than the ones from UT2k3, which is over a year old...

i can say from experience, that finding the right avatar is no easy task.. took me a while, but in the end i feel i succeeded..
in any case, i doubt anyone would steal it, its not fit for many..
i like your new one.. its so jinxy
[edit] as to your forums.. i helped or at least tried to help with the color scheme here at snarkpit, its very much to my liking and find it difficult to view others well.. even tho i admin PFL, and will one day soon have total control over it, i hate its color scheme and will doubtless alter it then..
the fact that its yours tho, makes it special to me, so.. i like it  in spite of the colors... it reminds me of SP a few years ago, and look how well it turned out
