I think unless its expressely forbidden by the contest, I'll be going with flatshaded anyway...I'm really drawn to it for some reason. So even if its something like Ben suggested, I'll be making an uber high polycount, open* and majestic*, marvellous* and unbeatable*, flatshaded map.
  • Most likely a filthy filthy lie

limited wads= 8 wads, no customs, original half life
limited area=bout 1/4 of the grid [whatever that is in units]
limited r-speeds=1000

thats my sugestion
There aren't 8 default HL wads though

/tries to erase dm_pulse rmf from ReNo's comp...

Heh  I'd love to do another flat-shaded map myself as it was great fun working on dm_pulse - they just have a certain style to them that makes them appealing. I guess the next step is to use various different shades of the same colours in order to add more depth i.e Killer 7

I personally wouldn't enter a contest with limited textures. Not to be a spoil sport or anything but I know I wouldn't find it fun.

Half the fun of mapping to me is using the textures. Limiting to flat textures takes away half the fun, and atm I need all the fun HL1 can offer me because tbh it's losing its novelty and fun factor

limited area; sounds good

limited textures; still not sold on it

limited r_speeds; i'll still spike over the limit, no matter what the limit is

what about a limit on brushes used?

i like CJ's idea of a partly made map, and everyone does there own interpretation of how it should be finished. it needs someone to submit the template though. any takers?

An r_speed limit is the most idiotic idea I've ever heard. Which fool came up with it?!

Any map which has popostously high r_speeds is going to run like s**t so is going to be s**t so won't win!

The doom 3 wads are pretty useless. They are hideously ugly textures without the specular effects on them. Its the engine which make them shine and reflect and look so lovely

How about just limiting the map size/grid space?

The rest being up to the individual/team to decide what form the map takes?

If they want to limit their range of textures, then they can - and specify it in the readme as to what restrictions that set themselves (if any). The map could then be judged depending on how well the mapper has worked within their self-imposed limitations.

Hehe, you probably have a point  I think its fun though, I've just started this, and it allows you to just throw things together and see if the geometry works, not spend ages picking textures to make it look spiffy.

Genious is probably including the illegal WADs. as there are about that 8 of them. However the only valid ones are halflife.wad; xeno.wad; liquids.wad; and decals.wad. There is also font, spraypaint and a few others too.

I still support some sort of limited, low-detail textures architecture type competition. Too much focus is on textures these days; not nearly enough on decent architecture or attractive lighting. The brief "detail texture" craze also contibuted to this, having people believe that detail textures are some sort of magical solution that makes any map look good.

We definately need more limits though. If there's no restrictions or rules, then it's not really much of a unique contest, now is it? Then it's just a "hey everyone let's make some maps and compare them", which is what we usually do anyway.

A small-scale contest with a few textures and a few rooms per map will encourage a short development time and more entries. A contest with just, say, a size restriction, will probably lead to larger grandoise projects that never get completed. Or at least that's how I would approach it.

I still think texture limits would be ideal - we have had two great contests here in the past and both came up with cool maps that adhered to the theme, and I think we would find the exact same happening here. Why not try something different, something away from the norm? Limited textures forces you into a new and creative style of mapping, which is surely going to be a challenge for everyone, and a bit of fun. Keep the map size reasonably low and most active mappers should have time enough to participate.

It actually sounds like fun and can be a quick build  . Deff something good to get my mind off NS mapping. I will go with what ever is out there, but right now I am going to have to put my real support in flat shading, cause personally. The team map sounds like a real hassle.

i think limiting detail or textures is dumb. Its a mapping competition, and youre really constricting how good they can be. If you set a detail limit of 20 solids, and 2 textures, everyones is going to be about the same level

Also another idea is a SMALL Single player one. The aim is to create the most impressive fight scene you can with:
  • Half Life textures
  • Half Life monsters
  • Half Life entities
No custom models, textures or sounds! There is a relatively high r_speed limit (1200 say?). And there is no limit on how many textures you use. Entrants would be judged on:
  • How good the map looks
  • How well the fight scene plays out
  • How unique or interesting the map is (maybe where some cool twists the mapper might put in)
There need to be more restrictions - like:
  • How many rooms the fight scene encompasses OR
  • How many units on the grid the mapper is allowed to use.
I think it would be best if the mapper is given a choice - say, three rooms OR 800^2 units or something similar

What do you guys think of this?

esechre may be on to something there. It would be good to see some good, new SP maps out there. Also with an SP map, you dont need a good net connection or LAN to appreciate it.
