I just heard an ridiculously cheezy dance-type song on the radio, and it was actually good. I have no clue what it is though, and the words were in a foreign language so googling doesnt help much. Something like mariahee mariahoo mariahaw, haduke, <insert foreign words here>...

This coming from someone who usually despises the crap 4/4 big beat techno thats popular these days (it takes away from good electronic music). Anyways, kind of bizzaire but it was a fun song.

40/the billboard chart is, but you can't dismiss entire genres off hand
because of their populist representations :razz:

I'm not the worlds biggiest (lol) fan of modern rap, but some of the vintage stuff is good. Thanks to GTA:VC, I now love Grandmaster Flash and Curtis Blow :smile: (Curtis might be Kurtis but I can't be bothered to ch-check it out).

Oh God, thats some wierdo Spanish song that somehow got really popular. Not a fan myself, but each to their own! I'm afraid I can't help you out on who it is though.

Campaignjunkie, if you like No Doubt, you should give Dance Hall Crashers a try. Some songs such as "She's Trying", "Salted", "Over Again" or "Whiskey and Gin" are totally amazing, to be honest pretty much anything by them rocks. Really good female fronted pop ska.

Another great female fronted ska band is Save Ferris, though I think they lack the polish and pop quality of DHC and No Doubt. Typically they do more typical ska music, but they have some really good tunes like "Angry Situation", "Spam" and a great cover of "Come on Eileen" :smile:

Some other really good, well produced ska bands to check out are Reel Big Fish (everyone seems to be able to like them), Less Than Jake and Smashmouth (not really ska, but they have ska influences).

Finally, if you like Sublime, you should check out some 311, who are quite influenced by them. They have some cool laid back reggae style tunes, such as "8.16 AM", "All Mixed Up", "Strong All Along" and even a cover of Sublime's "What I Got" which is...different to say the least! If you feel like some more rocking tunes then check out "Applied Science", "Feels So Good", or "Wake Your Mind Up".

Well there is another accidentally long insight into the musical tastes of me :smile:

My most recent CD purchases-

The Notwist - Neon Golden.
Very good album, overall. The music itself is rather offset by the lead singers quiet tones, but the two work great together. Very catchy tunes.

The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives.
Overall, it's a pretty good album. Some of the tracks are a bit stand-offish and hard to approach, but the rest follow the typical Hives formula of instantly catchy.

Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon.
This one was a bit of a shot in the dark- I had heard about Brand New from a friend, and Downloaded the song "Am I Wrong?," which is absolutely great. This CD doesn't quite live up to my expectations, but it's not too bad, either.

They Might Be Giants - The Spine.
Not quite up to par with some of their other CD's (Apollo 18... drool), but it is a bit of a throwback to their older days. They got rid of many of the 'tricks' they used on Mink Car to make it very not TMBG-esque. A few tracks do stand out as being quite good though. Oh, and if you hate TMBG in the first place, don't bother giving this one a shot, I don't think you'd like it.

Some other miscellaneous stuff I've been listening to, in no particula order-

Animal Collective - Who Could Win A Rabbit, Leaf House, We Tigers.
Mogwai - Punk Rock:, Ratts of the Capital [sic], Mogwai Fear Satan.
Neutral Milk Hotel - Most songs.

That's about it for now...

May post more later when I think of it.

I'm listening to The Mars Volta a lot, and their album (De-loused In The Comatorium) is certainly a must-have.

Dirtchambers session 1 was ok, I didn't listen to it that much, because when I had it, I was too young to appreciate it, I was more into the in-your-face stuff like smack my bitch up and firestarter, and jericho for some reason.

I bought Franz Ferdinand (self titled) and thats about it really. Very gud.

Nikola Sarcevic - Lock Sport Krock

He (yes...he!) is the vocalist from Millencolin and this album is such a departure from their stuff its quite unbelievable! It's very natural sounding and simple (in a good way). Stripped down soulful songs in the same style as 'The New Amsterdams'. You should all go buy it and then shower me with gifts because I recommended such a cool album to you :wink:

Because the other treads of "recently X" have been kept going, nows a good time to mention that Green Day's New album American Idiot is out, and I must say it is a great album. It gives us the old style of punk rock that has been out of the picture lately (if anyone noticed). And no crap about it being anti-american, just listen to it.

I have only listened to these as mp3s in a big list, so my opinion is based on how many of the songs from each album I can't stand. I doubt I'd buy any of these CDs.

Flogging Molly - Within a Mile of Home

I'm always tempted to hit skip when one of these songs starts playing on winamp, so that's not a good sign. I haven't seriously listened to it, but none of these songs jump out at me as great like some previous ones have (Delilah, Drunken Lullabies, Devil's Dance Floor). I'll still give it a chance though.

The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives

Pretty awesome. There isn't a bad song on the album. They all sound familiar yet unique, and most of them are catchy and fun to listen to. Favorite songs: Walk Idiot Walk, Two Timing Touch and Broken Bones).

Prodigy - Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned

I had no hope for this. While I loved some of Fat of the Land I've found that all the rest of their stuff is s**tty or unlistenable after multiple hearings. However, these songs have been growing on me, and some of them are very worthy and will stay on my playlist forever. The best songs are Hotride, Way It Is, and You Will be Under My Wheels. I wasn't a fan of Get Up Get Off, Phoenix, or Girls.

Blur - 13

This s**t sucks. If all the songs sounded like Bugman and Coffee & TV it would be awesome, but instead there's crap for the rest of the album. Mellow Song, 1992, Optigan 1, Trimm Trabb, Battle, ugh. Only the first two and maybe Tender will be making the cut.

I think I've managed to download every The Faint song there is, and that's because they are awesome. I have yet to find even an average song by them. The best ones are Agenda Suicide, Glass Danse, Victim Convenience, and Worked Up so Sexual.

I've also download a bunch of Refused, and they rock pretty hard too. The best songs are Beauty, Blind Date, Coup D'Etat, New Noise, and The Deadly Rhythm.

to be quite honest music in general has been terrible for the last 15 years. I mean, yes good stuff has come out, but the frequncy of that happening has gotten smaller.

honestly? shoddy may well be true, i dunno but the 80's are still played more consistently today on american radio stations than modern music i think.. i drive a lot, and i can find 80's jam no matter where i go, yeah theres modern stuff of course, but i think of all the old music available, 80's beats them hands down in shear stations playing it now.

In the UK, you can instantly tell you are listening to a regional station as all they play is 80s and early 90s stuff. Don't know whether its down to licences and stuff but there seems to be an unhealthy amount of older music on the airwaves.

Though saying that, a lot of the current chart stuff is rubbish anyway - I gave up listening to the radio years ago. Only time I listen to it now is when I go to work/come home as I get a lift with my sister.

There's also a lot of 'retro(ish)' stuff coming out that mirrors a lot of the styles of the 80s at the moment which is really good. Try looking for stuff by 'Dogs Die In Hot Cars' and 'The Futureheads'. And of course, 'The Cure' are still storming on :smile:

2 things though master hawkins, what if someone is like me and wants to hear 80's rock.. wouldn't we be in heaven :smile:

and.. what if they only play the shoddy stuff where you live?

personally, i never bothered learning band names or song titles, if its good, i listen, if not, i don't.. as simple as that.

that said, i am not against older, or newer music, but i still apply the same listening criteria.. if its good, i listen.

as far as style i prefer disco over any other theme.

Yes, over here Cool FM only play 80s and 90s songs, and it must be to do with licences because every week or so they seem to select 2 or three pretty forgettable songs and play them ad nauseum. I suspect Bargain Bin trawling in the music licence front too.

I used to help out at CAT FM (Cheltenham) while at Uni, with the rock and indie shows - but they used to be on Sunday nights at ridiculous times like 11.00pm til 2.00am.

I think it must definitely be to do with licences and time slots for the music.

I've been listening to too much Machine Head for my own good lately (the riff from "Old" is quite simply unbeatable). As well as Kasabian's new album, which I recommend EVERYONE picks up, regardless of taste. :razz: If you want any good indication of what they're like before-hand, "acquire" these tracks:

A Burnout 3 inspired purchase that was it Adam? :smile: I did the same -
"Over The Counter Culture" by The Ordinary Boys, and "Forget What You
Know" by Midtown both arrived today. Both are really good albums from
what the couple of play throughs they've had so far, but the tracks I'd
heard on Burnout 3 are seeming like the strongest songs on both.
Midtown I've liked for a long time but The Ordinary Boys are new to me
and have been a great surprise.

That obvious eh? :biggrin: I already had the 'Ordinary Boys' album and I agree it's very good. I've a few of the other bands on order too via Amazon but they all say 'available in 4-6' weeks :sad: And some of 'em, they don't even have, such as the 'Donots' - and nowhere has that 'FUps' band listed - which is a shame.

Well I'm going to attempt to be classy and say that Porcupine Tree's "Stupid Dream" album is splendorific. Of course it's their only album I've heard so I'm biased but it's good if you like Radiohead and that sort of thing.

I saw the Donots live when they supported Millencolin in Glasgow a
couple of years ago - we thought they were American but it turned out
they are from Germany, which you'd never guess from when the lead vocalist spoke. I have the "Pocketrock" album of theirs which
has some great tracks on it.

I'm currently listening to the new good charlotte album, nout special IMO.

I found the new Rammstein album "Reise Reise" and it is easily the best thing I've heard in months. Now if only they'd release it in the US already!
