If they weren't trying to scare you, then why did they have about 6 different scenes where an alien lashed out with it's second mouth only to miss someone by mere inches?

And just because the comic book has poor character development doesn't mean the movie has to. Perhaps they could have strived to go beyond their source material?

SPOILER: The worst part is that the movie does feel like a nerd fantasy, especially with the girl 'becoming' a predator, killing an alien, being given a predator spear, and getting a spear and shield made out of an alien. I could imagine the loser who sat across the aisle and jumped at random scenes going "wow, she's living my dream!" I don't want to watch a nerd fantasy, I want to watch a badass movie where a Hicks/Arnold combo character yells "Get to the Choppah!" while dodging acid and plasmacasters, occasionally taking time out to blast things with a shotgun he keeps incase of close encounters...of course during this time there's a huge pitched battle between predators and aliens...can't forget that.

Its the same idea. I was never scared by any of those movies, especially not Aliens.

Well, once I heard the premise of the movie, not much. However, if someone had said they were going to make a movie called Aliens VS Predator I'd have thought that it'd be like the computer game or a combination of the two franchises, not a comic book. I knew there was an AVP comic, but I've never read it or seen it so I didn't know that it had Antarctic temples and aliens on Earth. If this movie is like the comic then the comic must be hugely retarded as well.

Besides, the action wasn't that cool anyway.

Watched 'The Butterfly Effect' last night and enjoyed it. Was a little slow to start and Ashton Kuchter isn't the greatest actor around, but the plot far outweighed this. While there were slight element of Donnie Darko in there, I found the story to be though-provoking and a really interesting subject.

Right, going to either watch 'Kill Bill Vol.2' or start on my 'Harsh Realm' box set tonight :smile:

Actually the comic had this story 'arc' happening on another planet, and the chick left with the preditors ... believe me, the movie was a bit better. Comics just have things that only work in a comic.

I just watched Eurotrip. Its quite a good american-pie type comedy film.

Oh yeah, The Ring is cool, and Johnny English is pure garbage. The Shining also continues to f**k with my head in the best way imaginable.

Are you serious? The Japanese version is much better. True - Ring 0 was a pile of crap but Ring 1 & 2 are top class.

Look out for the original Japanese version of Dark Water too (being remade by the original director for US audiences too).

'Dark Water' looks badass (if its the Japenese movie remake that I'm thinking of), they're releasing the japanese cut (here) in theaters for awhile before the remake is out.

Was Dark Water the name of the original as well, or only the remake?

It was the name of the original too (that's what is on the cover of my copy) - though i'm guessing it was different in Japan, where they speak Japanese and stuff :biggrin:

i'm not a huge fan of zombie movies, but this must be the best one ever.

AVP = laughably bad.

When that Predator took off his mask at the end, I swear I was half expecting them to kiss or something. She had that whole dreamy look on her face, and the camera kept switching between the two...again, laughably bad.

Gothika= Great Movie, Tonnes of 'jump out of your seat moments' with great effects. Definatly one to watch.

I too was pleasantly surprised with how good Gothika was. The action was pretty good, but what really impressed me was the premise behind the story. They did a great job of conveying what it would feel like to wake up in a cell and be told you just murdered your loved one. It was one of the more original plots I've seen for a 'horror' movie.

I borrowed Apocalypse Now from the public library several days ago and finally got around to watching it this evening. (Actually, this was the second time I had seen it, which I only realized as it was about 15 minutes into the film. Apparently, I was a little, shall we say... "out of it" the first time around.)

I enjoyed the movie. It has a rather unique perspective on the Vietnam War. A glimpse of the madness that can come over people under certain circumstances, this film really makes a statement. Lots of crazy stuff going on in this film. I was amused.

That's like the most overused 'scare' tactic. Its in EVERY movie that has some sort of 'horror' theme.

Dreamcatcher. No matter how many bad reviews that movie has gotten, it is a wonderful movie. The only reason its getting bad reviews is because it misses parts of the book (Its a Stephen King one), but so does every film interpretation of a book.

If you are going to watch it, do so in a 5.1 surround system. The voices that come on throughtout the film will come from different angles and its kind of freaky.

Yeah, and the way the movie is advertised is strange, it seems like a psychopath on the loose type of movie, when really its aboot a bunch of friend that share a telepathic link that get stuck in the middle of an virus alien invasion (The aliens are also telepathic, but unlike any other story involving aliens they aren't human like, but snake-like.)

In the end, its a wicked movie and actually somewhat scary.

Dodgeball is pure hilarity. Especially the car wash. Highly recommended to anyone with a sense of humour.

Chronicles of Riddick, from what I can tell, seems to be some sort of techdemo for what CGI is capable of nowadays. Not only is it completely full of itself and overly-pretentious sometimes, but some things just didn't make sense. If Riddick wasn't the main character, I'd probably hate it. But Riddick is just so cool, I ended up enjoying it (depsite the huge amount of "jesus christ, who wrote this crap"!" moments I experienced). Pitch Black was better.

I f**king hated Dreamcatcher, the book was way better. The acting was just god-awful horrible, I couldn't give two s**ts about those actors when they got killed. The only good thing about it is Kurtz, because Morgan Freeman's awesome. It also didn't seem like a good book to make a movie out of since you'd have to explain "the line" and all that crap. Anyway. I just really really really hated the movie, wrote a 5-page paper for school on why I preferred the book, actually...

lol, you suck. The movie is good, its a summary of the book, not a direct representation of it. If you see, it says in the credits: "BASED on the novel by Stephen King"

And yes, the movie is quite confusing... Just like The Wall, it seems to have no exact story to follow, but is rather what you make of it.

I'm pretty sure all movies of books say "BASED on..." - what else would they say?

Meh, I didn't say the movie was bad, just that the book was better and that I hated the movie beyond belief. Either way. The things that sound fine in the book were just ridiculous in the movie, which was my main beef. Like when Beav's sittin' on the toilet and gets off it for a toothpick on a bloody floor and then promptly gets killed... it just seemed ridiculous watching it.

Dreamcatcher sucks. In both forms. Surprise, Surprise, a 'King' story has aliens in it. God, I hate Stephen King. The Darktower/Gunslinger series is what should be made, not garbage like Dreamcatcher and Maximum Overdrive.

The aliens in it are just different though... They aren't those cheesy ones that basically every film has... Big tear-drop head, big eyes, and a saucer ship... Although you can make an exception when Mr. Gray uses telepathy to make Jonesy think he is one of those "normal" aliens before he goes into Jonesy's metaphorical mind.

You forgot: formulaic, boring, and crap. He's had about ten original ideas written into books ... ever. It seems like he just takes old stories and characters, changes the characters choices, and then mixes two of his previous books together and BAM, he has a "new" book. I think Desperation was about the last time I picked one of his books up where I didn't really know what it was about.

I think his stories would be better if he didn't explain everything. In fact, he shouldn't explain anything that is f**ked up, past a general "It might be from this" sort of situation, because it all comes off as sounding ridiculous and stupid.

Take Desperation/Regulators for example(s), Satanic aliens, who possess people and force them to kill others ... how are they defeated? A Ghost with a bible and a new found stance on religion. Come on. Thats retarded. I don't want to read 50 gazillion pages of set up to get that sort of outcome. I think his writing REALLY began getting terrible after he wrote The Stand. Because, honestly, that book is terrible.

HOWEVER, King does write wonderful characters, I just wish he'd, you know, make up more then five ... ever.

i thought the camera work near the start was done really well. the way that it showed you what shaun couldn't see, even though he was walking in amongst it. some classic funnies, without a word being spoken.

Anyone seen the new Jet Li movie Hero? Good? Bad? Indifferent? I think I will see it this weekend.

I watched Jay and silent bob strike back recently, it's funny like thier others in a slap-stick comedy kind of way.

Hero is good. But don't call it a "Jet Li Movie", because it really isn't about him. Most all the characters have equal screen time. Also, the movie has about a half hour cut out from the original cut (however, this is a cut that was shown in China as well, I believe its the theatrical cut, and the directors cut is on DVD).

Its good. See it. Something that really sticks out is the color themes throughout the movie. You'll see scenarios shown in different colors depending on whos talking and whether its truthful or not.

I also love that they left it subtitled, however, Jet Li has a rather disgusting voice :biggrin:

Its really built up on an idea about China and its 'Revolution'. I can't really tell you more. I'm sure most people will enjoy the movie. I suppose one thing to keep in mind is that, there's meaning in the movie, so don't leave it with a "That f**king sucked" attitude. If you have no idea what I mean, see it. (it doesn't suck though :smile: )

On a side note, I bought Resident Evil today, it cost about $15 (I'd pay no more then 5 or 6), but it comes with a ticket to see Apocalypse, so, I really payed about 7 for it, which justifies the buying of the worst movie thats good.

And no, Resident Evil doesn't fall under the "so bad its good" catagory, because the movie is terrible. Its just fun ... an example of a so bad its good movie is Evil Dead ... probably Mortal Kombat too.
