speaking as someone who posted a couple reviews, they hurt when you have a bunch all at once, you gotta be careful not to make them all sound copy/pasted.. in spite of the fact that thats exactly what you may end up doing.. what we should do, is find a map we all wouldn't mind reviewing, and then allow everyone to do it, in this way, people would know just how freaking hard it is.. i mean from beginning to end, creating your own format and writing it all in HTML or some other code..

me ponders notion of doing my own :

Orph, I'm not currently doing full reviews of them, but short summaries for the competition page. I'd like to review most of them, and I will if I find some time, really busy these days sadly :/

why is it, even when i support your hard efforts, it sounds like i'm being accused of being an ass

short or long, there must be a dozen or so to do.. still gotta be hard.

maybe, you shouldn't be so stingy on delegating.. the collective experience here is worth more than its sum parts.

Um, as they say it's all in the eye of the beholder, but I can't imagine most people would interpret that as putting you in a bad light.

Anyway, new Steam update has just b0rked my version of Half-Life- 'error during description skip' followed by a C++ runtime error, anyone? :wtf:

Lep, i had problems with tfc after todays update, but nothing about runtime errors. in fact, no error report at all. every time i tried to either join a game or start one myself, hl would just close.

it turned out to be some files marked as read-only that weren't getting updated.

thought i'd mention it on the off-chance. you know.

It was giving a hex number, but it now works, though I haven't changed anything... I guess it was a conflict between Half-Life and the GIMPS program- http://www.mersenne.org - anyway, expect results tomorrow.

Thanks for the extreme sense of disappointment Cassius, when I log into the forums and find in huge letters THANTO WINS!

Thankfully there was also the sense of relief when I discovered that someone was getting ahead of themselves.

Ferret, no surpise to see fairytale in there  I am amazed that the
Melee Island map didn't make an appearance though, its an incredible
achievement to have created such a faithful recreation in such a
different engine. Thanks for anyone who voted for Flatshaded, I'm
really chuffed to have it joint third against such stiff competition!

I'm so glad melee3d didn't get in the top 3, shows we have people who know what a good DM map is. Now CJ has no excuse to not go back and fix all those random problems and give Persian Letters the release it deserves.

Wow, didn't expect to win! (seriously) I thought fairytales and
meleetown were a lot more unique and polished, and pulse was
stunning... Umm, thanks, I guess! Trying to not sound like an idiot or a prick, but I'm obviously having a hard time.

As for Persian Letters - very likely I'm going to mangle it for
singleplayer instead of polishing a multiplayer release (which had a
bunch of glaring problems). Honestly, even though it won, I'm not sure
if it would get any playtime as an HLDM map or be worth all of the
effort involved. I don't know, we'll see.

I'm still wondering who Lep will select as the winner though...

You are, CJ, you are!

Heh, the mapper himself always sees the bugs and
things yet to tweak where the player stares in awe at the wonderfull
creation. Gabe Newell still can't play Half-Life without thinking this and that should've been fixed...

Honestly, your map deserved it. Wonderfull look. The only thing I'd
wish was a Persian background tune... and the bug fixes off course.

And a single-player release... sure, why not?

Congrats to the other winners too. This competition has once again
established the Snarkpit as a powerhouse in terms of quality. Lots of
stuff for me to work towards to.

Any chance we could take a look at the other voting results too ? I want to know what happened to Thanto and Melee3D.

Sorrow came 4th, followed by Thanto and the others... Melee town had a few votes, and most maps had at least 1 person vote for them.

hesitates suggesting but cautiously advances idea

i think....

most of us here can handle the truth of the matter, would it be possible to post the stats, in % total of votes for the entire line up?

sounds confusing as i read it back,,

1000 total people voted, blah-blah% voted for CJ,blah-blah% voted for A_S..

i mean seriously, they don't hide the times between winner and loser in the olympics and other competitions, in spite of the 0.00002 differences between winning and losing.

viewpoints guys?

either way, i still bask in the glow of such magnificent artistry, you guys have come so far since your arrival here.. each one of you deserve an applause.. not just the top 3 placements, you all are winners in my book.

This contest had so many good maps it was unreal to be honest - ZGZ is
unique and should be fun, Reclamation has awesome gameplay potential,
Pulse was just jaw-droppingly unique, Thanto is the best looking first
release ever, and those were just the tip of the iceberg! To me,
Persian Letters is a worthy winner and (if I remember correctly) my
first choice, but its by no means an OBVIOUS choice.

I forgot, BIG THANKS to all who voted for my map and all other competitors who made this one of the best competitions the Snark Pit has had.

Personaly I had Pulse or Reclamation down for a place, as they are freakin' awesome maps, same with ZGZ.

The whole issue of incomplete maps will be better addressed when Lep releases the official reviews done by himself, I'd imagine. This first round of public voting was more of a popularity contest, with people voting for the ones that were not only great as a finished product, but would be awesome with a bit more tweaking, or had the greatest potential. At least thats what I interpreted as.

No offence to the winner's and no sour grapes, but by your own admissions your entries were still in various stages of construction or finishing, not completed articles. I think the official reviews will reflect that fact, giving other maps that may have missed out on a place in the public voting a greater chance.

But to all competitors, top notch work and congratulations all round.

to be honest, i didn't think it right to vote for an unfinished map.

fair enough, i used an older map and tried to tart it up/finish it off/tweak the layout, so i had a better chance of finishing by the deadline, but sows ears and silk purses come to mind there.

ZGZ got my vote. i'd love to see a ctf version of that one for tfc.

In my eyes, maps are NEVER actually complete. There is always going to
be something you can improve, change, or polish for another release.
But, to put a stop to the infinite cycle of reworking, you just have to
throw in the towel and move on to another project. I think time
constaints affected pretty much all of the entries, seeing as most
mappers are incredibly lazy slobs (most especially myself). Where some
people will consider a map "complete", I won't, and vice versa.

Congrats to Adam along with everyone else who managed to enter! Looking
forward to the next competition, probably for HL2. Pulse is a worthy
winner; therefore, I'll delay my brutal revenge for a few days, at the
least...

Yeah, well done everyone! It was quite a tough decision really- there's nothing in the rules which said maps have to be finished- but that's the way I felt about things. Anyway, surely the respect of your peers (voters) is more important than what I think at the end of the day
