I was just wondering how many people here at the SnarkPit have plans to enter the contest. Are you in? And what's your theme? Do you have some REALLY innovative tricks up your sleeve? (yes or no question of couse...)

My map is like a highway 17 map. A lot like the first battle with the gunship. Where you meet Colonel Odessa Cubbage At your Service. only mines got lots of innovative stuff in it and good displacement work.

Not me. I'm running a little low on mapping motivation at the moment after Frontline Force crumbled.

Besides, I think it would be wise for myself to wait a while to get all of the 'standard' themed maps out of the way and be able to come up with something a little different.

I'm going to enter if I can. I'm going to be remaking my first map Torque using a urban city17 theme. It'll probably suck and I'll give up but whatever.

exactly the same goes for me. only, on the first line, replace "Frontline Force" with "Paroxysm"

I'm going to enter provided I get my map done, pretty low on
inspiration for new areas so I'm just endlessly tweaking the ones I
already have. I'm essentially remaking Echo, but little other than the
name and theme remain the same to be honest.

I originally wanted to do a trainyard with moving trains and such, but
now I'm making a canals map instead. The water is so beautiful...

I don't really want to map for mods, contests, etc. any more. I don't have a lot of time and I want to be able to make maps for myself, not to fit someone else's needs or interests. That, and I only have a small start going on my first HL2 map anyway.

I didn't realy care THAT much for the standard theme either, but the rules of the contest dictate that you must use the textures and materials INCLUDED with HL2.

I want to make maps for myself and not to fit other's needs too, but I can do so a lot happier with $5000.

I wish I could just remake one of my old ones, but frankly, all of mine are novelty maps built for specific LAN parties and have much too much emphasis on complex entity chains and not enough on having more than one texture. for instance there is one map where you have to jump off a skyscraper at a certain place, then you are teleported to a room with a miniature model of the map in it. anywhere you shoot on the model-map will be blasted with mortar shells from the sky while you are showed a camera view of it. ALAS it only uses one texture!!!

lol Nickel. those maps would have been great to make tutorials/prefabs from, though, so people could integrate them into more developed maps.

True! a lot of mine have been erased, BUT I bet my freinds still have them loaded from previous LANS. My pal Jared the German, makes some REALLY nice maps too. I'll see if i can get some of those. They're all HL1 maps though...

I have started one, but seeing how I am really boggled down with work
and I have to leave for vacation in a few days dosn't look like I will
make it. turns out you have to send a hard copy to them aswell,
so I'm not sure if there will be any time.

I'm working on something. Trying not to go over the top with my idea, just wanting something solid, playable, within the hl2 theme, and interesting. It's nice to work with worldcraft again :dorky:

I'm not entering - since I'm nor 18, nor a fast or good mapper - but it
would be great to see some snarkpit member win something !

Go for it, budz !

I think what is gonna win this contest is something that is playable and also shows off the cool engin elements.

Well, really, I figure that they won't want anything too wacky or complex. In order to win, i bet you'd have to emulate the original DM maps for HL. Make them simple and Circuitous with NO dead ends. But i must be somthing that shows off the new entities like CROSSFIRE was for HL. With the airstrike it gave the map a REASON to be fast-paced AND a place to fight over. My map will most likely have the CRANE in it with a car stuck on the magnet. the first one to the crane get's the car. See? its not THAT outrageous.

I'm trying to get a job to by a new comp. Looks like I won't have to worry about doing any mapping for a while.

I'm making a map for a mod me and some friends are making. If
that's done in time I will enter it. Mind you it obviously wont
win (totally noob) but thats okay. So far I've got about 75% of
the brushwork
done for the foyer hall of the NY public library (the rest will not be
based off that library cause thats the only good picture i could find
on the internet) The textures and models dont exactly fit with the HL2
theme so itll have to be a library that got bombed or something.
Its got a revolving door which i thought is pretty cool to shoot with
the grav gun (obviously i will add lights later)

all the maps I've played have had nothing in them that really made me think, "wow this is what hl2:dm is all about"

think about all the traps you could have! its insane, but no one even seems to be doing anything like that.
