Computer Nostalgia

While clearing out my stuff today (I'm a terrible hoarder) I started
coming across old games like Myst, and Destruction Derby and it's put
me in a nostalgic mood about the good ol' days of computers.

Remember ZX Spectrums, loading games from tape, and garish blocky graphics?

And then there was the internet, back on my 14k modem and my cutting
edge win 95 computer (ok, im 56k on win 98 machine now, so i've not
advanced much). Remember the internet, back then (less than 10 years
ago) before napster etc. when computers were only just beginning to get
mainstream, and the internet subscriptions and phone calls cost an arm
and a leg. Its amazing the advances that have been made in such a
relatively short space of time.

I remember playing Doom 1 for the first time around 12 years ago, 'twas the coolest game ever even though I wasn't used to the controls at all.

Anyone else remember SEAMUS, or JUMPJOE? Lode runner? these are the games i grew up with! I also remember Rise of the Triad. Commander keen, duke nukem, King's quest and Space quest. Lots of good memories with those.

I reckon at the current rate of technological advancement, I'll only
have to wait 6-8 months till you can punch people in the face over the

As for old memories of gaming, I've many. I've played computer games
most of my life, from the Commodore 64, through the Amiga, past the PS1
and various other consoles up to the Xbox and of course PC. I wanted a
PC long before I got one however (my first proper PC was only a few
weeks before HL came out), so on the occasions I went around to a mate
who had a PC's house I took full advantage of the odd Doom burst. In
fact my very first level design days could be traced back to that guy's
PC, when we would build our own race tracks in 4D driving.

As fond as the memories are though, I'm pleased I now have PGR2 or Burnout 3 to mess around in :biggrin:

The First and Only Internet Mammogram

Besides "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" B+W and Colour for the
old Commodor 64 which I've still got in the garage, and Duke Nukem 2.
Doom 1+2 are perpetual classic's and Quake 2 was great fun at school
over the network during computing classes. I loved and still love to
play X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter and X-Wing Alliance; still possibly two of
the best Star Wars games Lucasarts has ever produced, which is pretty
f**king sad if you think about it. Oh, and Decent and Terminal Velocity, as well as Rise of the Triads, pretty funny game.

Heaps more but these were definately cream of the crop I think.

Playing "Alley Cat" on a 286 without a harddisk, just a 5-1/4" floppy
drive. Booting from a DOS disk, pulling it out and putting in the Cat
floppy. Running the game, getting 0wned by the dogs, trying to quit and
realizing that you can't exit from Cat, because it didn't have any
function to quit. Even if you do exit, where would it go? DOS? There
was no more DOS after you pulled out the disk. You're only option was
to reset/power down the machine.

The only game I played on tape was something called james pond or
something like that. That was round my cousins, then I got my master
system 2 with built in alex the kidd :biggrin: I've still got that now.

I actually never had anything other then a Mac Plus until I was in junior-high school. Then we got a 286. Eventually a 486 and blah blah blah (Never had much money really). I remember, I bought Duke Nukem 2 and I couldn't play it because my FDD was a low definition.

Then I started learning about the stuff and built my own. Way more badass then the other computers we had simply because, I was building it. My dad would always say crap like, "Pfft. Sound? You want sound now?" oh well.

Anyway, on the Mac Plus there was this game, I can't remember the name, but it was awesome. You controlled a helicopter with the mouse and there was a stick figure hanging off of it. At the bottom of the screen there was a horse dragging along a trailer full of hay. The horse would go at varying speeds across the screen and if there were clouds they'd slow the guy down. You click to let him drop and try to land him in the hay.

When my video card decided to give out a few weeks ago, I got out some
text adventures. I ended up playing through
The Lurking
Horror and Zork
Zero. No computer should be without them!

Me remembers Supaplex, Duke Nukem (1) and Cosmo. And then, I found my
first true love : Wolfenstein 3D! The only Doom I managed to play was
Doom II, which, strangely, I didn't like as much as I liked Wolf3D.

First game I remember playing was a clone of Donkey Kong called Killer Gorilla on a BBC that my mum used to bring home from school during the holidays. There were also a couple of text adventures too. I think it was called Sphinx and there was definitely a pirate that would steal your carrot...

I still had one of those untill acoupple of years ago when my mum threw it out I still have a load of games for it one of my favorite games was atf (All terain fighter) and all you did was fly over repetative lanskapes that would ocasionaly change colour and you would have to shoot down the odd enemy fighter ahh the good old games.

Another favorite was the James Bond Live and let Die game that came out never completed it I allways got stuck on a boat level

Nostalgia? My first computer was a commodore 16. the games were made up of text.

You had to tell it in 2 words or less. Do you have any idea how hard it is to describe an action with only 2 words. You cannot even tell the computer to "go f**k yourself" because its to complex.

I can remember playing a game like that on one of the acorns at school it did have very basic graphics though it had stick men walking round.

I also played a mmorpg last year like that that had no graphics you had to use telnet i think to play it.

Yeah, I remember walking around for the first time in Wolfenstein 3D,
just mesmerized with the amazing lighting and the detailed
texture. What architecture!

Sometimes I just found myself staring around in W3D because the
graphics was just so beautiful. I had no idea what was to come,
and that I was experiencing a piece of history in the gaming revolution.

I remember seeing my friends playing the original Doom for the first
time. They're hunched over the desk, playing with a set of
headphones on. Saliva drools slowly from the corner of their
mouth, but with their fingers tapping the mouse so quickly, they have
no choice but to allow the drool to flow freely onto their shirt.

It was truly a Kodak moment.

Pretty sure Doom 1 & 2 used mouse but it wasn't exactly intuitive. If I remember correctly, pushing the mouse forward made you move forward etc.

for true? my versions were DOS, and i strictly used the keyboard. in fact i distinctly remembering being in awe when i played my first mouse look game.

doesn't matter i suppose, may have been one of those "can use mouse" if you want games.

First computer I owned was a ZX Spectrum. And I love that Hey Hey 16K song, also.

First computer I ever touched was an Acorn Atom, in Junior School. Whopping 4K of memory. Overheated and crashed if you left it on too long.

james pond!!! that game rocked, one of my all time fav oldies i think!! :biggrin: the title alex the kidd is familiar, but i cant remember what it is exactly! what is it again?? did anyone ever play chuck-rock or cool spot, they were a lot newer, but they were classics in themselves.

Ah chuck-rock brilliant that came with my acorn when I got it got Zool with that aswell

Alex The Kidd (he was a kid with the surname Kidd, hilarious!) was a little dude with a red boxing glove he used to fight off various beasties across "Miracle World" (and other titles such as "Ninja World")

The best part was getting hold of the motorbike or helicopter on the appropriate levels and tazzing around at high speed. Hours of fun.

Basically it was an early side scrolling platformer :smile: Uber hard last 3 or 4 levels, too.

My nostalgia consists of BBC micros and 5 1/2 inch floppys and *cat and
shift break - shift with games with names i cant remember, with proper
rampacks (they were ribbon cabled :S). and the bbc micro manual and
other such things...

... I was past tape loading, but those damn 5 1/2 inch floppies were cool....

and a 1/2 inch floppies... so many memories, those were the days...

YEAA the NES gun.. that was awsome. i so owned at duck hunt. when SuperScope came out for SNES, i was all over that as well. anyway, my dad still has his commodore 64 in storage.. its almost got antique value now.

heh thanks orph. i've been lurking around the last few weeks.. because im stuck in this office with no work much of the time.

Both Doom and Doom II used mouse control, but there was no vertical
"free look" with the mouse. It only allowed left and right
movement. I remember distinctly that I was quite good at using
both the mouse and the keyboard to navigate around and aiming my weapon.

But as far as weapon goes, does anyone miss the BFG1000 in Doom?
With a white flash of the trigger, the entire room gets cleared.
All your trouble literally melt away.

That was awesome. And does anyone know what BFG stands for? "Big f**king Gun" :smile:

I still play Tyrian 2 on a 486DX2/66 with IBM DOS 6.22. It's fun.

I tried Dyna Blaster but as one word rather than two so it didn't work. It IS Bomberman though - so I guess it must be called Dyna Blaster in some countries.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not seeing a King's Quest in that quiz. What kind of a respectable computer game quiz lacks King's Quest?

And if you want to talk about lame mouse control, King's Quest 4 allowed you to use a mouse, but all it would do was the menu up top and let you click to where you wanted to move. All actions still needed typing and the pathfinding was horrible.

Everyones a Wally on the spectrum? - came with its own theme tune on cassette!
