you remember killbox, 3way, 2fortdm, yes they were interesting, but
when will the fools learn some decent architechure and simple mapping
rules, i know its HL2, and not everyone knows how to map, but this is
rediculous...

HL2 files have released 2 mappacks of pure crappieness, each with 50 maps included. expect to see 99 killbox clones.

i say 99, as tundra_cool has made boot_camp_tundra_cool and I know hes no noob to mapping...

heres mappack 1 containing, and i quote:
Planet half life said:

It really ticks me off that that kind of crap gets posted on the front page of PHL...

I don't care whether they learn to map or not, just as long as they don't come HERE! :leper:

A single one of those maps wouldn't get posted, its just due to the
fact they are big packs. I suggest that once the HL2DM contest is over
and the dust settles, we should gather all the entries from here and
release them as a big pack. Excluding any that won of course!

You act... surprised. First maps for any game generally suck, but they get all the publicity because they exist.

I especially love how these sites just put together map packs of any maps they find on a server, including multiple versions of betas and stuff. Morons.

What's really sad:

Mappers, like us, (edit/ not trying to make us sound like leetists or anything. Just trying to make a point!) put weeks, maybe monthes, maybe even a year or so into a map, have it come out as absolute brilliance, and nobody plays it!

Killboxes are fun, hell yea, but they're faaaarrrr from being an actual "map".

I think it is the source file, as well as the BSP, Hugh.

You can bet your ass I'm happy. Not.

FileFront is being uncooperative in removing the file, too D:. Loads of unreturned emails, and the VP of website ops even told me he'd take down the file when all it seemed to do was make the download link work properly :/

I hate to see my unfinished work released. It does stand above most of those maps in any case, but still - It's a s**tty BSP file.

I figured one of the 300 or so people who d/l'ed it wouldn't leak it to bigger sites. I was mistaken.

To whoever got it up at FileFront, I hope your happy about the fact I'm wasting valuable mapping time on getting this conflict resolved. And I'm risking the fact that the map might not be able to enter the competition since it's been released before.

That is really lame  Valve most likely wouldn't be aware of the fact
its been leaked out there, and you still have plenty of time to make it
significantly different to the release that is out there. Even if they
did realise it was somewhat released already, I'm sure they would
understand your plight - its hardly like you are trying to shove in a
map you had already made or something. Hope it all works out mate

Go fire up HL1 on steam and I guarentee the original killbox is still being played.
I played HL1 DM last week for the first time in about a year on some clan server and they had killbox variants (made by them) and assorted other crappy maps. I told them they should go to Snarkpit and get some real maps and i got booted

Crap, I already missed the boat. I should have released a yakbox map to get my name out there so that people would pay attention to my better maps.

The sad thing is that people are actively encouraging these people to make and release these maps, and if I were to go to a general HL2 site's forums and call them on their crappy work I'd probably get banned...

Most of these maps are simply stunning! Just by looking at them you can
see how much time and effort was put into them. It must've been real
hard for all those mappers to pull off such great things. Someday, I
will become like them.

Or.. not. Seriously, what's up with this? Some tard finds out how the
hollow tool works and start releasing maps. The worst thing is that
people actually play it and put them in mappacks. Way to go, that way
you'll make sure everyone plays that horrible map. I mean, can't the
mappers themselves see what kind of horrible thing they've created? Do
they really think that people are interested in box maps? Jesus. Most
maps don't even have lighting. They're just fullbright. Somebody tell
those pricks to stop releasing their 30-minute maps. Also, tell those
tards at HL2 Files to stop packing it.

I know that not all maps are as horrible as some of them are, like
dm_bounce for example. So excuse me if I have insulted it. Heh..

Heh, that is a funny forum post, and the SomethingAwful review is funny too.

I have been playing some HL2DM today, downloading custom maps as I play, and seeing them makes me feel like somewhat of a better mapper. Like one map (backyard or something) which had a ladder that you couldnt even use, and the multi-coloured wall effect. That, and a map where you could actually run under the terrain, staying on what I am assuming is the skybox, and shoot people from underneath. It was cheap, and somewhat fun to shoot ammo away with the grav gun as people try to get it, but still.

But I agree with what is said here. If you dont even take the effort to make your map not fullbright, why make the map? Lights are simple.

Oh well

Effort isn't really the question -- a lot of n00b mappers are most likely afraid of ticking the boxes in the compile process window. The first map I made, a box, (had baracle, HEV suit, shotgun, zombie, player start, and one light) I accidentally checked the "Do not run map after compile" thing. For a second, I thought I was doomed to never play any of my maps D:

I have not played these maps and I don't plan on it. That's why
review sites exist. To seperate out the crap. Any HL2
review sites up? I haven't seen any, just dev sites.

This used to be a map review site as much as an editing site, but as
the HLDM mapping scene slowly died away, so did the Snarkpit reviews.
There is now a user review system but nobody seems to have been using
it much yet - probably waiting for source engine maps that are worth
reviewing to make an appearance!

Global Assault just recently started back up again, it does short
reviews on maps along with small screenshots and downloads, which
should at least give you an inclination as to what is worth downloading.

http://www.globalassault.com

Keep an eye on the new maps bar on the main page here as well, most
people post screenshots as well as download links, and there are always
other people's comments to go by.

I guess I'm more of a single player type-o person. I like making
sp maps because I think they're more difficult (I'll prolly be flamed
for that  .

But I really liked the 3DMR and I'm still a fan of TenFour. I'm
not much for Counter Strike though. It seems like that's what
most people are mapping for. Where's the HLSP yo?

Well... this time they have high quality maps. Um...

"FilePlanet has searched the internet for the highest quality Half-Life 2 Deathmatch maps for your enjoyment! From the industrial toxic gas facility of DM_Gasworks to the quiet lapping shore side of DM_Docks, we are sure you'll be impressed at what designers have done in such a short time"

http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/148523.shtml

Big disclaimer
I understand some of these are just betas that gamespy has grabbed. I don't mean to imply all the maps here are terrible (Although some definately are!), but I think only one of them is up to release standard.

DM_Docks - Big open water area with a bit of shore and some wooden walkways. Lighting is bad. Gameplay sucks because it's just a big open area.

DM_Exit - What the hell. This has to be a joke?

DM_fool_day - Remake of fy_poolday, a boring CS map. Competent but tiny and bland.

DM_Gasworks_b3 - An alright recreation but undetailed. Outdoor lighting is bad and the skybox is boring.

DM_Overcast - Better than most but very boring lighting, no cubemaps, slightly odd scale, mismatched texture use and bad flow.

DM_Phystown_final - This is a map from the alpha leak someone added weapons to. Terrible framerates and poor flow/balance.

DM_Powersurgebeta4 - One of the better maps. Good visuals but next to no gameplay. Too dark, lacks weapons, bad flow and almost no physics objects to use the gravity gun with.

DM_Stalkyard_mrmof_v1 - The best map here, but it's just stalkyard with different graphics and a few physics objects. Competent but boring.

Piff - Generic arena. Not bad as arena maps go but it's still only an arena.

Prison_Grav - Putting some rectangles together does not make a map.

Now now, don't be harsh... those people have spend five minuites of their time to create all those.

Valuable time they should have used to kill themselves with.

That lot makes my cack map dm_combinebase look good. Then again, combinebase isn't just one big room...

maybe they had a competition to see who could make the biggest box?
