Ive never denied that girls play video games, I know a whole bunch that
do in fact  . But most of them game for the consoles (xbox, PS2,
GameCube). In fact I havent come across a girl yet who doesnt at least
know what Halo is.

You will hardly ever find female gamers on the PC, you know for games
like Half Life 2, CSS (although i did coma acreoos a girl playing
CSS...she had a great spray logo saying "haha you lost to me, that
means you have a small [male-p-word]" on the background of a fat girl), WoW
(which rases some questions because there are a lot of "female" night
elves walking around), Far Cry, Doom 3, etc.....

edit: reminds me girls do play on the PC...they just play hearts and
solitare on a computer that run Doom 3 at its highest settings

Yeah, I browsed through their profiles just now. No one played HL2 or even the original HL. A few of them played Quake and Rainbow Six though.

I don't think Quake was ever ported to the console. I could be wrong.

...and female mappers. Now, that's a species we'll never encounter.

i have met several. yeah, the total numbers is small compared to their male counterparts, but yeah, i have met several. in fact, wasn't there an entire clan of female mappers/fraggers?

on the other side of this, no one here is sure that we all are male.. the internet has peak anonymity.

It's all a bit suss if you ask me...how come they're all rather pleasing to the eye? Not a hint of ugliness in sight!

And there used to be a female mapper on the Frontline Force team called MaryB - though she kinda disappeared a while back.

TBH none...because if they need to make a web site to prove that they
are gamers then they have some issues, that could put strains on a
relationship, like If one of them was my girlfriend id think that we'd
be argueing half the time over whos the better player

Quake 2 was to PS (perhaps other consoles too). Dunno about the first game though.

Quake made an appearance on the N64 actually...sadly. I think they were
clutching at straws to find any FPS they could easily port after the
success of Goldeneye

I've come across a few female mappers - there are a couple of really
good female UT mappers who put out some of the more popular custom
maps, and we've had a similar discussion about female HL mappers and
turned up at least a couple. When it comes to female FPS gamers, I've
seen dozens. My flatmates seem to find themselves partying a lot with
female players in WoW as well, though I guess its kinda easy to "play
female" if you are so inclined. Then we get to the Advent Children
forums, which are dedicated to the upcoming film sequel to FFVII. Well
to be perfectly honest, I'd wager the MAJORITY of its users are female,
the place is overwhelmed by them (and mostly run by them too).

Girls arn't gamers, and these pricks arn't anything.

They are just stroking their ego and trying to get into modeling or some dumb s**t like that.

These girls are crushing what little legitimate game industry is
left. There is a reson that gameing is having a hard time being
accepted as a main stream form of art, and s**t like this is it.
People who cant make something good just tag on some boobs and sex to
sell more copies of a s**tty game.

I could rant all night about this...

maybe I'll write them an e-mail.

I don't think you can say they aren't gamers - I just had a quick read
of a couple of the blogs, and I saw a fair few references that people who
didn't play games wouldn't be able to make. For example, while talking
about RE4, one of them references a really unimportant RE3 'puzzle' by
saying "But you know, it sucks I haven't seen Carlos in this one. That
guy can
move some heavy bells that us girls just don't have the strength to
move (haha)". Have a read of one or two entries. Would you still say
they don't play games, or is that not what makes you a gamer?

Perhaps you are annoyed because they write about playing games in a
blog? Well it might not be quite as funny as Penny Arcade or
Ctrl-Alt-Del, but its still along the same lines as those hugely
popular sites. I see you also write your own blog, so surely its not
the "blogging" itself that pisses you off...unless only guys are allowed to do it that is

Even if they are doing the site because they want to get into
modelling, I don't really see whats "wrong" about that. Apparently they
already do go to conventions - one of the entries I read talked about
showcasing "Brothers in Arms" at some ATI event. Is it not better that
the "eye candy" that always accompanies such events are actual gamers
with an interest in the subject matter?

Perhaps DrGlass is upset because these nerds are actually good-looking? I don't know. I actually dig pretty nerds.

In fact, I applaud them for putting up such a website. And they didn't do it just to get modeling exposure. It's much easier to do that without going through the trouble of learning how to play games well.

you guys are right, but it just seems to me that they are using their
sexuality to gain popularity. Not that its so wrong to do that,
but the game industry is so over saturated with smut and sex, why
should these girls who game be any diffrent than some other joe who
games?

I mean they say one the front page, 43% of the gamers are girls. So whats special about them? Good looks...

I guess at some level I'm jelouse, but I always hate when girls get
special 'perks' when they are gamers. Like in those MMORPGs
females always get free stuff becuase us males are losers (some of us
anyways).

Penny arcade uses talent to be popular, these chicks use boobs and sex
to get ahead. While there isn't really anything wrong with it, I
dont want to give them the time of day becuase if they were guys...
that site woudn't get any hits.

If this were a mecca for girl gamers, where girl gamers got together
like us dudes do... then that would be a diffrent story, while other
girl gamers gravitate to the site (it seems) its just a meat show in
the end, at least thats how I see it.

With rare exceptions, gaming will always be a male thing. It's
coded in our genes, and shooter games like HL2 and Far Cry will never
be very popular among the female population. I don't care what
people say or disagree, I just know it's true.

That's why girl gamers are valued. Not because they're good or
anything, but simply because they're rare. It works like
diamonds. Diamonds are just carbon, but they're overvalued and
over-priced simply because they're rare. There is nothing
inherently special about diamonds. They're not even particularly
pretty or interesting compared to other gem stones (i.e. opal,
sapphire).

For the same reason, a guy would be pretty popular at a yoga class or a
knitting school, even if he's relatively ugly. It all comes down
to supply and demand.

Quite a pro looking site, I couldn't figure out at first how a bunch of
gaming gal's could afford to have such a site designed, since they'd
need illustrators and the whole shebang. But then I noticed that
wonderful little logo at the bottom of the page. Good old Ubisoft,
trying so hard to conquer the female market.

Personally I think its great when girls play games, as its a social
event that both sexes can enjoy. I've got a few female friends from uni
who play games, one of them is an X-Box addict. It is a good point
though to note that most play consoles over PC's, probably cause the
former seems to have a seriously reduced "nerd" factor. I don't know
why thats the case though, I mean, I wouldn't consider us to be a
bunch'o'nerds  .

That statement is quite backwards. The reason gaming IS becoming an acceptable mainstream artform, hobby, profession, is the same reason boobs and sex are 'mainstream'. They bring in Money. It's big business now, and all bets are off. Gaming will be whored, marketed, 'buzz worded' until gaming as we know it is sucked as dry as television. It already is, actually.

That's the way it goes with art - vs - media. It's the dog chasing his own tail. The minute it becomes 'accepted' and 'mainstream', it loses that underground sense of rebellion or obscurity that made it cool in the first place. To a degree, that is. There will still be good games with soul, which are genuine works of art, that are also highly marketable and financially successful. Personally, I am looking forward to making 'mainstream' entertainment that secures my profession and financial future. Bring on the boobs. Maybe we can have our cake and eat it too, for a while

theres one type for everyone! I would not be surprised if these poor
gals were put together by.. *looks at contact mail address. fragdolls

This is an idea, instead of music groups that cant really sing you put together gaming groups that cant really play.

Excuse me if this has already been brought up in the thread, I only read the original post.

Gameing is becoming more mainstream, but at the same time it isn't
accepted as a form of art like film. The more trash and smut that
is put in games only to move product the less respected games will
become.

These girls and their web site is cute, but they are in no way helping push gamming into a seriouse art form.

Well I'm doing my bit at Uni. For my major design project next session
I'm trying to incorporate my mapping work, possibly concieve and create
a small single player game. And this is in a Graphic Design subject.
You'd be surprised how much game design is actually becoming a part of
the Art and Design world.

While these kind of things may work against the public image of gaming
amongst the general population, the significant merits of the industry
are continualy being recognised and well recieved in the creative
community. And besides, for the average population only painting and
sculpture is classed as "Art", excluding web design, advertisements,
graffiti and other alternative or emerging art forms. The thing that
matters is that the community and the people that matter realise this
fact, not joe six-pack.

Thats not a true statement "IF" you take into account all forms of computer gaming.

For the most part, "action" gaming may be a predominantly male thing, but in general, I am betting that females actually out number the males in over-all computer games.

Females tend to play the "thinking" games such as tetris and those awful card games like solitaire. My wife plays majong almost exclusively, NOT an easy game to master i might add.

If one takes into account that there are more kinds of solitaire than there are any other genre (or so it seems) then I am betting that the female population does indeed out number their male counterparts.

The problem with this thread is, nothing but males are responding so its all very narrow thinking. Broaden your perspectives beyond "modern" games and the numbers will alter a bit.

Myrk must live in a veritable honey pot of female sexiness if he finds
these ladies "ugly as sin"...but then perhaps this is just another case
of over-exaggeration from our local quick-to-hate  I'll agree that
not all of them are wonderfully hot, and that beauty is in the eyes of

You know what I think Duncan? Master Myrk has been receiving some training for his adulthood life concerning the female persuasion. He already has the "blind eye to beauty" down.. You'd be surprised how much game design is actually becoming a part of the Art and Design world.
Ultimately, if gaming is truly going to be recognized as an art form, it's going to be through the route of cinema. Video games and movies are already merging and collaborating. Just look at all the movies that were inspired by video games. True, most of them sucked, but some of them are actually quite decent (Final Fantasy). I know Tomb Raider and Resident Evil movies are garbage, so no need to point that out.

And conversely, tons of video games have been created from their cinematic counterpart. Goldeneye, all the Star Wars inspired games (including the Jedi Knight series) are actually very good games.

I threw the gauntlet to them. Now it's up to the chicks to stand up to the challenge.

I'd be down for that. Perhaps after that there could be a rub down and a shiatsu, while we're at it.

I'm not sure how likely they'd be to actually play a game outside of
Ubisofts published game list. If you check out the site thats all they
seem to play "officially".

My girlfriend plays Diablo 2 and Neverwinter Nights. She also plays Counter-Strike but couldn't hit a cow with a frying pan.

My girlfriend can kick me around in most racing games.

I haven't gotten her into PC gaming yet. I'll keep trying.
