I noticed the huge CS:S and Hammer update today. It includes the de_nuke map (with HDR lighting) and lots of bug fixes.
But when I tried to fire up Hammer, all I got was this fatal error message:
"Extra App ID set to 211, but no SteamAppId."
And Hammer closes immediately after I click on "OK".
Anyone else having this problem? I already reset the game
configurations and refreshed SDK content, but nothing helped. I
restarted Steam also, but the problem persisted.
How can I solve this problem?

dont know if this will do it, but occasionaly you need to fire up whatever game you have just had updated to get the fgd "goosed" and going.....ive had nothing but problems since the release of the dods fgd, and the beta sdk....yes i know its a beta....but some of this stuff is 101.....

In that case, I'm not restarting steam until I hear good news from you guys.

Even the CS:S engine is unstable now. I just had it freeze on me.
I played de_nuke with HDR lighting on. The HDR lighting doesn't
add much to the gameplay, except for dragging the framerates. The
map is also extremely large, which doesn't help with performance.
It's a pain to get from one Bombsite to another, because the place is
freaking huge.
However, I do like the little attention to detail, like the highway
with cars zooming by near the CT spawn. The bots don't seem any
smarter than before the update, however, despite what Valve claimed.

Beta SDK Hammer loads up fine on my PC, I've been using the beta for
several days, so I didn't have to refresh anything. Valve seems to
break something with every recent update. I'm about to try de_nuke out,
good luck to all you poor souls without Hammer, I hope the beta thing
works for people.

I get this error too. And I'm getting sick of reinstalling hammer after
every major update. I'm switching to permanent offline mode as soon as
I get hammer stable again. :sad:
Note: refreshing the sdk content and running the beta sdk did nothing for me.

i uninstalled the beta a few days ago, mainly because it started to freeze when i tried to open the map i'm working on, but also because i don't like the model selector at all, and the whole program just has too many little faults.
i don't play cs:s, but dod:s had an update this week, and i've had no problems from it.
HDR in a multi-player shooter where every split second can mean life or death is just plain silly. there's no point in standing around blinking while your eyes get used to the light, just so you can take a headshot from the guy you couldn't see. pretty for pretties sake is fine, but if it puts you at a disadvantage because it occasionally blinds you and constantly attacks your framerates, then why bother?

I've decided to just leave my computer and Steam on all the time, so I don't have to deal with this mess.

About mappers getting the rough end is very true! Gone are the days of
highly skilled dedicated mappers who create massive and highly
impressive mods, in are the days of 11 year old L337 nubs who create 5
minute full-bright killboxes :sad:

My hammer is gimped to the max with the same problem "Extra App ID set
to 211, but no SteamAppId." I found where the .txt that involves the
extra app ID and SteamAppId but i have no idea what it means, and
therefore wont mess with it. If anyone out there thinks they know what
to do, the file is
steamapps\ACCOUNTNAME\sourcesdk\launcher\gameinfo.txt {EDIT} here are
the contents of the file, and also i found the sdk target includes the
-applaunch 211 without any other app referenced, this could also
mean somthing. I'm a noob at all this coding stuff so i'm just gonna
post any info that references the sdk's gameinfo.txt, since i figure
more info can't be hurting the problem, but too little may be the
difference between a solution and no solution
<div style="margin-left: 120px;"><div class="code">Code:<pre>
"GameInfo"
{
FileSystem
{
SteamAppId
220 // This will mount all the
GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).
ToolsAppId
211 // Tools will load this (ie:
source SDK caches) to get things like materials\debug,
materials\editor, etc.
//
// The code that loads this file automatically does a few things here:
//
// 1. For each "Game" search path, it adds a "GameBin" path, in <dir>\bin
// 2. For each "Game" search
path, it adds another "Game" path in front of it with _<langage>
at the end.
// For example:
c:\hl2\cstrike on a french machine would get a c:\hl2\cstrike_french
path added to it.
// 3. For the first "Game" search path, it adds a search path called "MOD".
// 4. For the first "Game" search path, it adds a search path called "DEFAULT_WRITE_PATH".
//
//
// Search paths are relative to the base directory, which is where hl2.exe is found.
//
// |gameinfo_path| points at the directory where gameinfo.txt is.
// We always want to mount that directory relative to gameinfo.txt, so
// people can mount stuff in c:\mymod, and the main game resources are in
// someplace like c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\<username>\half-life 2.
//
SearchPaths
{
Game
|gameinfo_path|.
Game
hl2
}
}
}

Personally, I believe the problem arose because CS:S engine was updated to support HDR lighting, and it made the standard Hammer (non-beta) not recognize the CS:S as a valid installed game for the account.
Don't know, but it's my guess.

Did you say you were using the old hammer before? Because that's obviously the problem. Update to the beta and it should work. It seems they took out support for those older sdk tools.
I don't like some of the changes in the beta hammer (which actually runs).
The numbers on the grid are disgusting. The selection boxes are pain in the ass to drag now. Things just feel more awkward.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

So all I have to do is add "-beta sdk" in the Steam command line? I'll try that.
Thanks.

It took them one day to fix the error. It's still pretty fast.
I just wish they had tested it before they released the code for the last update.

I think the remade nuke looks very nice in spite of the fact that it's a prop orgy. :evilgrin:
As for updating, check-out properties->updates by right-clicking on source sdk.

Well it looks like the beta sdk is no longer beta, at least mine seemed to update to the new version by itself today. The only problem is my advance compile window has lost all its parameters. Completely blank. I can however compile in normal mode, but thats no fun. Can anybody copy there advanced deathmatch compile parameters here so I can put them back?

I reverted. The new features weren't that important to me, and I've
already memorized the location of (the important) props anyway. Skew
tool and arrow-key navigation are just too precious to me.

WTF! I didn't do anything but close the tab and it submitted a post.
But anyway, I like the old skew tool as well, and no arrowkey
navigation when vertex editing is really annoying. I went back to the
current release. I hope they don't release it with that 'feature' and
the other bug.

The hyper-sensitive skew tool is annoying yes, but I always navigate with the mouse, and not the arrows.
I like the beta sdk, almost entirely for the built in model viewer.

The old model viewer was annoying. It feels like something that
was haphazardly thrown together at the last minute before Hammer was
released.
It's a step in the right direction. And for some reason, I hardly
ever use the skew tool. Maybe I should use it more in the future.
