I just changed my avatar and it made me curious about where other people's avatars came from, and why they chose it.
I already know where Nickelplate's came from
Anyway, my new avatar comes from an old WWII (or WWI, not sure) poster bearing the slogan "Loose Lips might Sink Ships." At the risk of starting an emo-bash-fest, the reason I discovered the poster was because I loved how the line was used in 'XO' by Fall Out Boy.
My old avatar was taken from a digital blasphemy image that was the closest thing I could find to a cool representation of a neuron. I wanted something that would go well with my online handle. It worked well for almost a year and a half, but I wanted a change.
So... where'd your avatar come from? Why'd you choose it?

Ah, well, I made my avatar in paint one day because I simply wanted a radioactive mutated smiley. Don't ask me why.

Mine is St Christopher, patron saint of Travellers. Although i'm not
religious, i'll wear him in honour of my previous and future travels.
Still struggling to find a good representation I can have tattooed on
my back, though.

My old one was something I drew years ago, this new one though is a just a picture that I cropped from an artist that I've talked to on DeviantArt.

For ages I had the Gargantua pic from the old Worldcraft entity guide. the one where it depicts a garg doing the shootflame(or whatever its called) animation
then I switched to a pic of a garg swinging its arm beacause it was a little more, active, of an avatar
then I moved to a VG cats frame heavily modifed to include the american flag and a Garg.
those were all based on my name, which is a story unto itself
now I just use the laughing man logo on most sites. I just love the character of the Laughing man from Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone complex. he was just such a perfect geek, a moral superhacker. and the quote "What I thought i'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes" that circled around his logo struck me as fitting. saying, I did what I came to do then I fled into the depths of the net to watch and see if I must intervene again.
and while im not a superhacker nor have I fled into the depths of the internet, I identify with his character. so I have a stylised version of the logo as my avatar now.

Mine is a lego doctor, I even put the word (Doctor) under it. It used to be blue but someone on this forum said the blue (0 0 255) killed their eyes so I made it this nice red (#240000) which I also use on my website. I like this red.
The other icon I use is a face half submerged in water.

Mine is Spiderman... dancing. I use it because I find it amusing. I actually spent something like an hour fumbling through Adobe Image Ready removing every other frame, cropping part of it off, and resizing it, just to get it under 50KB so I could use it on this site.

Mine is my first atempt at creating abstract art in Cinema4D. (Not to mention that this was the best abstract I ever made.)
The one before that (which sadly I have lost) was a space marine I modeled years ago for a high school dga class. But, most of ya'll would remember that because that avatar was changed long before I became a lot more active on forums.
note: I know I haven't been as active on these forums any more, I've been over at the onrpg and enb-emu (which EA acknowledges its existance) forums, might be gone long after this post too.
You know, I've actually got nothing to say

Fox because foxes are sexy.

I associate names more so than avatars, but yeah, I know how you feel.
I sometimes completely bypass a reply because the name, or avatar is unfamiliar.
I feel that if people would be more picky before deciding on one, that they'd be more apt to keep it. Orpheus has been my game name for a couple decades now. My avatar... about.. I dunno.. 3 years?

I usually keep mine as long as I'm feeling what the avatar expresses. Methinks this one will be kept for awhile though, 'cause it's t3h sex.

As far as "names" go, G.Ballblue has been my psuedonym for... since, what, 2000? Long before I joined the Snarkpit.
I generally see "changing avatars" as more of a hunt to find the perfect one  I'm quite pleased with the one I have now, and SvenCoop avatar is very nice is well, and I'm hoping to hold on to both of them for quite some time.

Ha, I don't even use a pseudonym! Also, my old name was Andy because I was a sort of
mini-Andrei (hence the diminutive form) when I started my online
activity (read "spamming", but I was only 12 and could barley speak
english).
I often play as ComradeJoe though.

I was ()))Crayola))_> and ShootTheChicken for awhile, when I played TFC, and then when I signed up for Snarkpit I went with FrenchToast instead, because I'd had some that morning. Now I stick to it, or variations. I'm FrenchToast, French Toast, FrenchandToasted etc.

i used to be spectre, but then my friends called me fatstrings because i played the bass for a short time so i jokingly switched to that and now i'm stuck with it
the original pic from my avatar was given to me by a member of this site (can't remember who)
then nickel messed with it an i use it because it works and like you guys said, changing avatars mess with my mind and i don't want to cause any confusion

I don't know, it's hard to come up with a name for other people, since I feel like an online handle has to have some strong personal tie to make you truly want to stick with it.
In other words, I don't think I could come up with anything you would find fitting
