Along Came Polly

I like Ben Stiller although he always plays the same character in every movie. I rate this kind of movie for laughs per minute and so I found it to be quite good.

MI3.

Spectacular action scenes (duh), but a very silly love story. It didn't convince me, but I liked the coolness of the movie.

Just watched the Alfred Hitchc**k film The 39 Steps for my film history class.

It was entertaining. Nice twists all the way through.

Edit: It's ridiculous how Alfred's surname gets censored. Alfred Hitch :kitty:

'Tis a cat you fool!

Don't know if I said this in the old thread, but I watched 'Thank You For Smoking', which was a really funny movie.

I watched 'Death of a President' today too, which is basically a documentary of the unsolved murder of President Bush in October 2007. It's put together really well and covers all the religious/political stuff, and is a spectacularly well made movie.

Yesterday I watched 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan'. Basically one big hilarious jew joke.

The Prestige is excellent. It requires thought, so, if you don't like thinking or get confused easily (wont say any names) don't bother with this gorgeous film.

Yeah, Borat was pretty god damn awesome

Watched District 13 the other day too, which was cool. I felt it let itself down toward the end, but the "intro" scenes for each of the two main characters were just plain amazing

Recently watched all the existing episodes of the US version of The Office and you know...I actually prefer it. The UK version was more smartly/better written but I think because this US version has extra episodes and includes other characters more, I've kinda got more attached to them than in the original. Its become more sitcom-esque in that respect.

Just watched the uncut version of Hostel. Now, I can understand the 'hype' around this movie, but a movie that relies more on "shockvalue" than on plot isn't going to be remembered by anyone after a few years.

Borat FTW! After all this years I think he doesn't need my fanboyish advertising anymore.

I saw The Faculty the other day on TV. From all the self-ironic cliche teenage-horror movies of the 90ies this and Scream are the best (read "most fun to watch"). So many classic scenes.

Watched Casino Royale today. I quite liked it, not as much as I thought I would but I had sorta built it up in my head beforehand (everyone was saying how it would be rubbish and I had convinced myself it would be great). Daniel Craig seemed really good but he didnt really have a chance to put on a true Bond performance given the structure and theme of the plot. I hope he gets a more traditional Bond style storyline to work with next time. At the very least it was refreshing to depart from the shallow, flashy previous films like Die Another Day.

I saw it today myself -- the entire time I was comparing Daniel Craig to Sean Connery or Pierce Bronason. Overall, I thought he was a bit week -- he came off too much like a thug, his facial features weren't very Bondish, (Daniel has a rough face with plenty of lines, and barely any hair, while Pierce Bronason and Sean Connery have a much "younger" or "suave" look) and the action came off like a ordinary action movie. The lack of the 007 Theme -- yea, the song was in the movie, but hardly at best -- also detracted from it being a "true" James Bond movie.
And also, after discusing the movie with my Dad over the original Ian Flemming book, the story plot was mega-modified

It will crash and burn imo. The first in the series relied mostly on shock-value. But it's no longer shocking when we've already had SawI, II and III and the boorish Hostel (which I hear will have a sequel too).

About two thirds of the way through Tank Girl I just couldn't watch any more. Once it got to the kangaroo people it started down that slippery slope.

A Clockwork Orange. Brilliant.

EDIT: I also skimmed through and watched various scenes of The Big Lebowski trying to find a good avatar. I love that movie.

Marie Antoinette.

Great movie. Very long, no hollywoodyian climax or meaning and a showdown-free ending (not a big fan of those). But very good!

Things I learned:
  • people in the 18th century knew how to party
  • Sofia Coppola has a talent for great soundtracks
  • and it is torture to see a man lie in bed with kirsten dunst, refusing to have sex with her while she literally begs for it.

I have run into a few people who are crying blasphemy about Da Vinci code.

Personally, its just another opinion, about a tired old topic. Nothing to get your panties twisted over. Surely nothing as controversial as Stigmata was. Now that was a truly moving experience.

i haven't watched Da Vinci code, i consider it a great book, even though i'm Catholic, it's funny the Catholic church never expressed outrage over this novel and it should have pissed us off more than Baptists, maybe we just understand fiction

anyway, i refuse to watch the movie because i'm too suspicious it will ruin a great book

I didn't read the book. I did however like the alternate explanations in the movie. It actually made sense to me. My family on my mom's side is 100% catholic. I heard lots while I was a kid and none of it made as much sense as this movie did.

That said, I am a bit more receptive now than then. I had an atrocious childhood and the very concept that a God would allow the things that happened to me was a concept that my youthful mind refused to accept.

I would be more inclined to believe the movies rendition of the topic discussed within the movie than the versions I heard throughout my life.

(man, do you have any idea how tough it is to discuss a topic without spoiling the plot for those who have yet to see it? )

I've seen it too. It was OK I guess, although the humor was a little simpleminded. After all, it's mostly a series of gags in more or less rapid succession.

And erm "pure comic genius"? I can hear Charlie Chaplin turning in his grave all the way from here. :|

That's just it! His humor is based on stereotypes. We have the stereotypical Kazakhstani terrorist child, the stereotypical unwashed villagers, the stereotypical foreigner (because people from countries ending in -stan couldn't possibly comprehend western lifestyle) etc.
I dunno. Just not my kind of funny.

Hmm OK.

I just want people to know that Cohen hates stereotypes, probably more than all of us together and it's certainly not his intention to promote gypsy jokes and people looking down at 3rd world countries. But it's not only rich Americans that have stereotypical views, you also have that in poor, underdeveloped countries where it's at least as bad. You cannot always accept (fictional) traditions like men putting women in sacks and kidnap them for marriage or the great catch-the-jew festival, just because it's part of another country's culture. This is all more complex than political correctness can ever get. I never saw a movie that shows this balance so cleverly - and with so much humor. Even though Borat doesn't offer any solution to the things it criticizes.
Why snark works.

I think Sacha Baron Cohen has missed his own point in what he was
trying to achieve. From most of the opinions i've gauged in Britain,
people are laughing at the stereotypes and mimicking them.

They're not laughing at how inanely racist/anti semitic/sexist
people are shown to be, they're laughing because their own inner
bigotry is being indulged. Only the critics laud it for being some kind
of pseudo exposure of ingrained attitudes toward minority/persecuted
groups, most people find it funny because they enjoy laughing at the
notion of evil jews, prostitutes in cages or whatever else. The movie
has gone too far, and created a new wave of hate toward minority groups
IMO. When he was Borat way back on the 11 O Clock Show, I think it was,
there was only mention of the typical "we kill the bear" "i had a nice
sheeeet" and so forth. The one trick pony model of Ali G has been
carried on again into Borat. After a few months his jokes become old,
he plays up some newer, more offensive ones and passes it off as clever.

In reality he's serving the bigots the finest brainwashing ammunition they could ever dream of.
