So which upcoming console do you think will be most appeasing to you?

I can't believe how amazing the graphics on the PS3 look. It's also the only thing so far that actually ran Unreal 3 smoothly. Check out Killzone 2 and the new Tekken.

I don't tend to base things on looks, but the XBox 360 looks like a
souped up breeze block and the Playstation 3 looks like a certain
well-known boxer's grill. The Revolution isn't without fault either,
looking suspiciously bland. The one thing I am impressed by is the
number of features on the XBox 360 - downloading updates for games,
playing media etc. All very impressive stuff. At the end of the day
though, it'll probably be the Revolution for me, partially because of
the backwards compatibility with my GameCube games.

Where's the option for those of us who think consoles blow chunks?

even if its a lark, you should always include an option for people who may not find your choices acceptable. :/

Never have and never will like the playstation... I'm more content with the Xbox, knowing that when its all chipped and hacked to bits it becomes a mean bean super computer with amazing potential. Plus I kinda like Microsoft, I dont see the big deal with them- at least they offer an OS which is half decent and normal people can use.

i agree. i find consoles to be overhyped and offering no advantages over PC, being expensive, game-restricted, ...

Actually blister I think you'll find the game variety on consoles to be bigger than that of PC's... And the games tend to be more fun, I've had enough of 1st person shooters now, I'm content with the current selection. Consoles have good racing games, and you guys are all neglecting the point in consoles! Your all cave dwelling PC users, Consoles are a very sociable thing, invite your friends over, have a beer, play Burnout 3 on your Xbox etc. Its not the same as PC's...

Blister, consoles are cheaper than PC's, not more expensive. You find a
brand new PC able to play games well as the Xbox for ?100 and I'll be
impressed. As myrk said, they also offer a far wider range of games.
Fair enough there aren't many TBS or RTS games flying around for them,
but pretty much every other genre is covered. Actually there ARE even a
fair few new TBS games for consoles (Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics,
Phantom Brave, Atelier Iris, Stella Deus, Dynasty Tactics, Romance of
the Three Kingdoms), and a few RTS hyrbids (Kingdom Under Fire, Kessen).

Out of the new consoles, I'm really a 360 man. My Xbox is my favourite
of the current generation, and with Live it really has nailed how to do
online gaming for consoles. With Project Gotham Racing 3 (the second
game was online racing nirvana) and DOA4 they have their typically high
standard racing and beat em up launch slots filled, and Blue Dragon,
Lost Oddysee, Oblivion and whatever Square might have (besides the,
lets face it, not very impressive news they are bringing over FFXI, a
PS2 game for gods sake) appear to give a wider range of RPG's than the
Xbox offered for quite some time. Frame City Killer looks like it could
just about shape up to be a Shenmue style wandering adventure with hand
to hand combat (though the shooting sections looked AWFUL in the video
I saw). Ghost Recon 3 looks beautiful and atmospheric, Gear of War runs
on the Unreal 3 engine so enough said really, and with another FPS
adventure coming from the CoR:Escape From Butcher Bay developer, I
think that offers a pretty decent array of action games. Factor in what
sounds like an MMO racing game from an experience developer (Test Drive
Unlimited), Need For Speed going back to its old police chase days with
style (NFS: Most Wanted, just watch the video  ), A Kingdom Under
Fire/Dynasty Warriors/Kessen style game from the developers of the
first game listed (Nighty Nine Nights), and much more besides, and
there is plenty there to keep most people occupied. The system itself
looks ok, and better vertical than horizontal (which is a shame given
that with the PS2, that apparently did damage to the drive) in my
opinion. Wireless controllers are a major plus point for me since all
mine tend to break at the wires, and the controllers themselves seem to
be very nice and address most people's complaints about the old ones
(giant Xbox logo, black and white buttons being crap). Backwards
compatability isn't really too clear at this point due to the wording
in the conference ("it will be backwards compatible with the top
selling xbox games"....hmmm), but even if it is only for limited
titles, its still a plus point. My Xbox has, unfortunately, a Thompson
drive and crashes frequently, so if I can get one in November and not
have to put up with the crashes in some of my older titles, I'll be a
happy man.

Of course the PS3 press conference really "pwned" the 360 one when it
came to stats and demos, even if it did somewhat fall behind in terms
of the presentation (poor speakers (well English wasn't most of their
first languages so its understandable), very standard stage design,
lots of boring sections, etc...). The Killzone and MotorStorm videos
really did look too good to be true, and for most people, thats how
they are taking it. The guy did say before the videos rolled that they
are all real time, but they really did look prerendered in terms of
visual quality and smoothness of animation. If they turn out to be real
time, and the games ACTUALLY look like that when they hit the shelves,
I'll quite possibly jump ship and get one of these instead  By
mentioning sequels to all their big hitters, including recent games
like GT4, DMC3, Tekken5 and MGS3, they will really pull in many many
consumers. I'd be amazed if many of them appear in the first few months
of the PS3's release though, and if they do I wouldn't expect much from
such short development periods. Oh of course I almost forgot about the
console itself - ewwwwww. There was one cropped frontal screenshot I
saw that made it look almost exactly like a NES! I really dislike their
design for it, with the indented section for the disk looking really
awkward and old. Less said about that new controller design the better
too!

The Nintendo press conference video stream was f**king up for me so I
didn't bother to watch much of it. Their new Gameboy looks tragically
small to me, and I can't begin to imagine how most games will be
playable on such a tiny screen. I guess their handhelds normally do
well, so it will most likely be a decent seller. The Revolution
probably LOOKS the best out of the new consoles, and being backwards
compatible with apparently ALL their old systems is quite an
acheivement. Quite how this will be managed - apparently by downloading
them and putting them on discs or something - isn't clear, but if its
possible thats one hell of a selling point. Of course the fact is I
have an N64 and SNES sat in my living room, and NEVER play them, so I
think for me at least this is a feature that sounds cool, but will
never be used. Since this is only early days for the Revolution and it
won't be out for a long while, there weren't any games mentioned that I
know of, so how they stand on this front is yet to be seen. No doubt
they will offer a pretty decent selection of first party titles, but
will third party developers be willing to support them after the
gamecube?

EDIT: Holy crap that was long. I can't imagine anybody actually reading, but nevermind

I'll be getting all of them. X360 is a given since I'll be shipping a game on it, but there's a bunch of other games I'm giddy for on that one - Gears of War and Ghost Recon 3, for example - and the controller is the most sexily awesome controller ever on the face of the planet.

PS3, while I hate the controller design and am not won over by the real-time claims of KZ2 and that racing game (I believe Insomniac's title, though the video was low quality, seems far more believable and the GT shot I saw looked like HLR graphics with a few extra features), will have some great games and be well worth the purchase. Plus it's the only way I'll get any Insomniac or Naughty Dog stuff.

And the Revolution's backwards compatibility support alone makes it a winner. I have a lot of GC games but came into the console thing late so the opportunity to get and play older titles (Conker immediately comes to mind  ) makes me very excited. It'll be interesting to see what games they'll be offering for it.

But yeah. I'll be getting them all eventually.

I wont be getting any cos I preffer the older consoles especially the SEGA ones and seen as how SEGA isnt making any more consoles that means I wont be buying any more consoles unless there are enough games to tempt me to get one which is what the GC has nearly done.

PS3 has a few nice games in store (MGS4, Devil May Cry amongst others).
I wonder if all those pre-renders they're throwing around really are
indicative of the console's power (which I doubt, but I like to
beleive). It's also a damned ugly console. Looks like a bloody grill.

Revolution's backwards compatibility (a large "holy s**t!" from
myself), as well as looking sleeky and shiny as f**k, gets the win from
me. Plus we get Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc. I just hope they reveal
these super secret control pads they've got cooking ASAP.

Xbox 360 looks like it's been sat on. "Deep Breath" my arse, it's a
squashed pillow bathed in liquid nitrogen. Perfect Dark Zero is not
enough for me to shell out for a brand new console.

Revolution wins for now; a definate on-the-day purchase. Might get
PS3, but 360 looks unlikely unless they get some more interesting games.

btw, did any of them release details on games being released with the console?

Xbox 360 will apparently have Project Gotham Racing 3, FFXI, Kameo, and
Perfect Dark 0, but I don't know what else. I'd wager DOA4 might be
since the third was for the Xbox, but since DOA:Ultimate hasn't been
finished for all that long I guess I might be hoping for too much. They
have said they are on target to have 25-40 games available in the first
three months of the console's life, which is a very respectable number.

Since Nintendo haven't mentioned any games for their system, there is
obviously no info on release titles. PS3, as far as I know, haven't
mentioned any release titles either.

Processors are more than their clock speed, and don't forget that this thing isn't out yet- when you get a hold of one of these things next year, 1mb of L2 cache in a 3ghz chip won't be state of the art, or cost a vast amount.

This year actually, its out in November  Your point still stands of
course - its not comparable to buying 3 single 3.2Ghz chips. Not that
that detracts from the fact that consoles are cheaper than a
comparabaly powered PC.

That is true... consoles are generally more streamlines and so those
cpus are probably alot cheaper to make than the average PC CPU...
but honestly, they both get outdated... consoles when console v2 comes
out, PCs... do I need to explain PCs?

The Xbox360 looks really feature packed and the PS3 supremely powerful, so I'll be getting these two for sure.

After having been burnt with the Gamecube, I'll wait to see how well the Revolution is supported first by other game developers and how many decent games are available for it.

The backwards compatibility isn't really a big draw for me tbh as I'll likely still have the previous consoles anyway.

Orph, it's not really a case of keeping up with the Joneses - there are plenty of great console games around. I too couldn't see the appeal with consoles games up to a few years ago, but there are areas in which consoles out do PCs. Sure, PCs rule the roost when it comes to the likes of massively multiplayer onlines games and first person shooters, but for genres such as multiplayer sports and fighting games the consoles wipe the floor with PC games tbh.

I wouldn't get caught dead with either of these two genre's, so mayhap theres a reason I don't have the console appeal. :/

My likes: RPG,RTS,FPS,and TBS,, thats about it. I see no comparisons to console beating out the PC for these genre's.

I have several hundred bucks invested in my PC's. I have most all of the older consoles, for the kids, but if they want newer, they will be buying them not i.

Dreamcast,Nintendo,Sega,Xbox,Gamecube to mention a few.

The almighty platformer crown will probably never be wrestled from the consoles. I even just bought a controller for my PC for some Psychonauts action (I'll probably eventually go uber-geek and get multiple versions of this one, as with BG&E, it's that good. ). I'll probably also start using said controller for KOTOR (gotta finish up that dark side path) and BG&E PC, which I haven't finished yet.

When you look at stuff like Psychonauts, BG&E, Prince of Persia, Jak, Ratchet, Sly Cooper, Viewtiful Joe, etc. etc.... PC would never do.

One of the best things about PS2 when it came out is that you could
play all your old PS games. Thats a gigantic benefit, considering
that if you already are paying 300 for a console, and games are 50,
really how many games can you buy before breaking the bank? But
being able to play your old games still means you don't have to buy
enough games that you won't get bored. IMO PS has better games
than xbox. If I were to get a console (which I'm not) it'd be PS
3.
To get something to work, sometimes you just have to beat your head against the wall longer; the skin grows back, but the brick doesn't.

Well I'm glad the PS3 is being made because imagine the huge battles in Zone of the Ender :O

It lagged on a PS2 because it used the PS2's power to its fullest!

The size and speed was amazing for a PS2 to handle so imagine Zone of the Ender 3 on a PS3 :O

The battles could last for hours and your eyes would hurt at the speed your mech flies around oooooooo!

Wasn't that just used in the Xbox 360 development kits, since nothing
else at the time was powerful enough? The 360 uses three 3.2Ghz CPU's
that each run 2 threads, while the PS3 uses the new "Cell" processor
that Sony codesigned with IBM and Toshiba (it has lots of processing
cores - 7 are used on the PS3). Suffice to say both of these are pretty
damn powerful - the 360 has over 1 terraflop of raw processing power in
total, while the PS3 has almost 2 terraflops. Thats much higher than
current top of the range consumer PC's.

Example of console vs PC prices...

x-box 360 has 3 3.2g CPUs...
a combined power of 9.6ghz is quite a leap from 750mhz... a bit unbelievable i have to say but i wouldnt know.
i dont like consoles (the only games i ever played were all the GTAs and Halo 2) but the xbox 360 seems the most promising
I didn't quite belive it myself when I first heard it...
Signature? What signature!?

My likes: RPG,RTS,FPS,and TBS,, thats about it. I see no comparisons to console beating out the PC for these genre's.
Yeah, in RTS and FPS games the console joypads simply can't replicate the precision and speed of a mouse, or the number of buttons to do specific tasks that the keyboard provides.

There are some extremely good console RPGs though, and even the GBA has some great Turn-Based-Strategy games (Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are two examples).

TBS games are getting pretty popular, particularly those from Nippon
Ichi. You only need look at all the Japanese ones that are coming out
on PS2 - Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Dynasty Tactics,
Front Mission 4 (PLEEEEEASE come out in the UK!), Atelier Iris, Stella
Deus... Seems to be more of them on the consoles than on the PC these
days to be honest.

First off, I am not all that militant, so I don't need to be appeased.

I've never owned a console, for one major reason. I've only
enjoyed playing FPS games, and everytime I ventured out of the genre, I
was disappointed. I am sure there are non-shooter games out there
that I'll enjoy, but they're hard to find.

As a result, I'll probably never buy a console. Besides, a
computer is much more versatile than a console. I can actually
use it for other purposes than gaming and watching movies.

That said, I would buy the PS3 if I ever end up with a console. I
don't own any cnosole games now, so backward compatibility doesn't
offer any incentive for me. The graphics for PS3 kicks everyone's
ass, and I actually like the sleek design of the box.

As a gamer I'd have to go with the PS3 and the Rev for its backwards compatibility. As a developer, all three are fricken awesome. PS3 with it's new technology and using OpenGL(I love them for that), 360 with the DirectX API and various features, and the Rev...well I haven't checked out the Rev's development capabilities yet. As a sidenote, the demos of each of the consoles was done with older development kits that in no way show the real power of the system. Hell even with the PS3 on the way, Sony is still supporting the PS2 till 2010 simply because its architecture is still showing a great deal of life in it and developers are still trying to find out what they can do with it. Four 300MHz, 128bit processors all working asynchonosly, working in harmony is still pretty damn cool.

I will probably buy a PS3. I think PS3 will win again, but perhaps not by as much as the last time.

Haha orph

Well if I'm going to buy a consoles (which isn't a sure thing) I'd
definitely go out and get the PS3. I have a PS2 and a bunch of
games for both the PS1 and PS2... and so I'll get a lot out of the
backwards compatability.

It's funny, I used to be a huge SEGA fan (since the genesis was my
first system) and I used to hate Sony for killing off the Saturn and
the Dreamcast. Eventually I broke down and bought one... and I
have no regrets. I don't see the trend of Sony drawing quality
games to their consoles ending any time soon.

Visually, I think the Xbox 360 is a lot nicer looking, and the
controller looks like a great improvement over what was already, in my
opinion, the best one out there. I really don't like the way the PS3
looks, and while that wouldn't really affect a purchasing decision
directly, all these little things add up to a persons opinion of the
system. Its controller really puts me off - looks like a bad third
party controller for the ps2.

It looks like a boomerang is what it looks like! But to be honest none of those controllers look comfortable to use.

The xbox360 also looks just like one of those mini computer towers.

Aside from its controller I like the way the PS3 looks.

I'll probably get both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but why silver? what ever
happened to black? In my opinion they're trying too hard to make their
consoles look futuristic.

The PS3 controller looks awkward and ugly IMO, but I remember the
original xbox controller was big and awkwardly shaped, so I'm hoping
that Sony releases a "revised" or "improved" controller. If not maybe a
third party company like logitech will make a less boomerang-ish
controller... maybe something that looks like a PS2 controller....?

You will take that back when you hold the xenon controller.

luckily, I had a chance to play with the new 360 controller...since I've been at E3 for the past 2 days!! Anyway, I have to say, it felt very nice...and wireless out the box is a much needed default.

Haven't made my way to activision yet, Andrew.... was wondering if you were in attendance? I'll be checking out the Q4 stuff tomorrow.

Nope, not this year. Too much work* to do in the meantime! Hopefully next year, though.

By the way, the Insomniac shooter game displayed looks freakin' insane... at first I was thinking it was maybe a WW2 type thing, but with crazy numbers of people, but then those weird alien/demon/mutant/whatever they should be called things showed up... daaaamn. Whatever it is, it looks sweet!

I was thinking much the same - really does look to outclass CoD2 at the
moment, which was (at least at the beginning of the trailer - talk
about an unexpected change!) about the closest direct competitor I've
seen so far. Nice to see a twist on a popular setting, will be
interesting to find out more about it.

That controller looks a lot like the Dreamcast ones, especially from the back.

I like the trend of smaller and smaller consoles. My roommate
replaced his old PS2 that stopped working with one of those new ones
that are barely bigger than a dvd case.
