Lep, I'm a little concerned about how the map comments/forum thread
system works out. Yesterday I listed a map I was working on, and it
received some comments overnight. Today I figured I should start a
thread for the map, but doing so has meant the previous comments have
been deleted. Shouldn't it just be the case that the comments system is
"locked" until the map is complete, but the existing comments are
retained? Or perhaps they could be transferred over into the forum
thread somehow. Just doesn't seem right to me that they are deleted.

I agree. One time I spent a long time writing up a detailed
critique of someone's map, and the next day they had created a map
thread and my comment was gone! I didn't even get a chance to see
his reaction to my input.

They haven't been deleted, they're still there and should re-appear once the map has been completed. Though you have a point that they should still be shown anyway...

OMG, what a novel concern.

I mentioned this ages ago, its no more/less important now than then but I imagine that when I suggested it that Lep was hip deep in his school duties and it was moved to a back burner concern since it only bothers the commenters and not the site in general.

I think the previous sub version of the whole site was better. In general this version doesn't seem to work as well (by version I mean the earlier form of the current). The maps forum seems to be a big concern, and the commenting situation.

I wouldn't suspect anything can be done soon - Lep is clearly on a bit of a
hiatus, and nobody else can do anything like that. I don't know for
sure if Lep can even force a limit like that through code, though I
could be wrong. My knowledge of internet programming languages is
pretty much zilch.

If code cannot be obtained (and I am inclined to believe you) Then I will request Admin status over the maps section again.. I would gladly be responsible for deleting/policing these over sized screens. If members cannot be counted on to do it themselves, then "removing" the screens is the only option left.

Lep.. I officially request Admin over maps, or specifically the images of Snarkpit. You have my word that I will remove nothing under 150k or any images at all in the "Arts" forum.

I hate being in charge of things, but if its gonna take my name being "green" once more to get this straightened out, then SO BE IT!

Reno he can quite easily, I've seen him code the snarkpit. It would be a simple 20 minutes of coding php for him. Some sort of command saying if the filesize is too hgih then the image is rejected and a message is echoed saying something.

Hardly uncodeable!

Lep and I had a heart to heart once about this. He already has coded the site to reduce images stored on the "site". For the most part it works pretty well.

He said that he cannot figure out a code to monitor/police outside hotlinks to screens. This alone seems to be the crux of the matter. n00b's and such linking from outside image hosting.

If someone could come up with that code, the problem would resolve itself.

Right now, all I can think of is human intervention and since I am the problem, I feel it should fall onto myself to do so.
I do so grudgingly, as I do not crave the position.. I feel we have much better people than myself qualified to Admin this site.

There isn't a fast and easy way to do it, though it wouldn't be hard to get the resizermajigger to also look at filesize and reject images over a certain size (and apply the same check to comment posts...). And yes I am on a bit of a hiatus right now, but will be back next week, assuming Myrk has sorted out a new DSL modem like I asked

On several occasions today I received the "NEW PM" message only to find no PM waiting. I never noticed this prior to today so.. shrugs

I added two really obnoxious members to my ignore list today. Is it possible they are sending things and the system is only partially catching them?

I can't set my bithday. It always switches back to 1st of January. And my hobbies field is not saved eiter. As far as I can tell the rest of the board works properly - so I don't think it's because of some Java (or whatever) I would need to enable.
Any suggestions?

Birthdays should now be working; I'll get a front page thing working when/if a few more people list theirs.

I've also just had a play around with some sIFR (with a massive graphical overhaul of this site in mind) but unfortunately browsers display Flash over the top of drop-downs menus, and there's nothing you can do about it :/ I've got some great ideas in mind, but unfortunately it feels that the mechanics of this site are just about perfect right now...

I'm having a posting error happen to me in the planarity thread. It seems to have something to do with the fact that I have edited my last post, and am now trying to add a new post. Instead of posting the new reply, it responds with a green snark telling me there was a problem editing my post. If I then check the thread, it lists my last time editing the last post to show up as when I was trying to add a reply, if that makes any sense.

Purely so I can remember for later when it's working again: 11:02, 3152.

Also, the quick reply window will toss Snarkpit back into the foreground if you mouseover it while it's in a background window. This is highly irritating when I'm browsing the board and running a game that doesn't use the full-screen at the same time. Any chance this can be corrected?

I have a suggestion: when linking map screenshots from another site,
rather than displaying that little green box, wouldn't it be better if
the linked image would be resized and used as a thumbnail?

The server would have to retrieve the images, load them into your cache, then resize them, cache that saved image*, and finally show it to you.

I mean, the entire point of thumbnails is so you don't load the entire freakin' image.

Not to mention, this query of grabbing the image and resizing it is done every time the page is viewed. Not a good idea, to say the least.

However! Something that would be a good idea is the option to upload your own thumbnails, or at the time of uploading the images, if the site did the resizing and then saved the thumbs in your own area and showed those while their links are still pointing to the outside source.

Or if you at least had the ability to upload your own thumbs, with a size restriction of 20K or something (which can be enforced at the time of uploading).

*I forgot, the easiest route would be to just use an image tag resize ... which cuts out one caching, but is still more time consuming

Do you mean that when the user gives remote links to their images
(meaning at the moment they update their map profile with remote image
links), the
website automatically grabs said image and generates a thumbnail, which
is then stored locally? If so I think thats a great idea, and if it can
be done then should be. At the moment I believe the website is
automatically generating thumbs for uploaded images, but if it
could create AND STORE thumbs for remote images it would be awesome.

It doesn't generate thumbs unless the image is being stored on the site though. I'm sure the reason why is that the outside image host thing is to save resources on the pit, so, creating ANY space for it, unless absolutely necessary, would be defeating the purpose ... however, it'd still be faster ... and perhaps over time become the dominant way of showing screen shots. I mean, you already make people host maps on their own sites (unless I'm mistaken)

On that note though, it'd be nice if you could load at least one map not exceeding blah size to your profile (the same way the images are stored)

But, it probably was thought of (these are pretty logical options that you'd be aware of ESPECIALLY if you designed the site) Not enough space or need more hosting, since, loading images is not nearly as spendy as large files.

Blah!
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

No, I meant the thumbnails should be resized using the same principle
as the one when posting resized pics on the forums, without uploading
them. Like this (original pic is about 600x500):

User posted image

This presumes that HTML will be allowed for map descriptions. I don't
think this requires the site to store the images on the cache, does it?

I know what you meant. It's a bad idea. You have to understand for that to be resized the php code that resizes it has to download the image first (save it to YOUR cache) and then resize it. It doesn't save a thumbnail when on the forums it just uses plain image tag syntax. (I haven't checked the source, but that's what it looks like, since the image is not smooth)

That means that the entire image has to be downloaded before it can be seen ... which defeats the purpose of a thumbnail.

My suggestion was that they are made and cached on SnarkPit ... that's completely different and a much better option!

I thought all that would have gotten through. I'll explain it again if you like.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

i don't know if it's already been mentioned, but it seems that a new user can add a map, somehow rate themselves as a five, then delete their map. without the map, no-one else can rate them anymore, so they get left with a perfect 5. which is a little annoying when we all know that win98 would probably be wearing the 'I R MORON' badge by now.

Also, the quick reply window will toss Snarkpit back into the foreground if you mouseover it while it's in a background window. This is highly irritating when I'm browsing the board and running a game that doesn't use the full-screen at the same time. Any chance this can be corrected?
This seems to have gotten lost in the discussion on the optimal thumbnail arrangement (I support being allowed to upload size-regulated thumbnails if pics are offsite). Does anyone else have this mouse-over issue? Does anyone else get as aggravated by background windows that shove their way into the focus like I do?

Doesn't happen to me anymore actually, no idea why. It used to happen
and it did get on my nerves, but I just tested in both FF and IE and
putting your mouse over the text box doesn't make the window steal
focus.

Would it cost too much bandwidth to have the general banter forum autorefresh every 30 seconds or so?

*cough*slow*cough*

This means a new counter is initiated for every single viewer of that page ... or the entire site. It has nothing to do with bandwidth, since, you already have all the hefty stuff loaded in cache, but, counters are pricey.

I came across a instant message program online which was just php, very slow with an auto-refresh.

I'm sure there's a more efficient way to do it, but ... it's just a pain in the ass for a functionality that isn't really needed: If you want it to refresh every 30 seconds ... get a stop watch and hit F5 every 30 seconds

There may be a way to code some js so your browser does it on it's own though ... hmm.

Just noticed this.

Your "smiley" interpreter seems to not have the definition for the frown smiley. I had to type the image path for it to show.

When I try to modify a news post I've submitted before it is moderated,
it gives a "News item does not exist" error. Might be an idea to fix
this so that you can modify your submissions before they are moderated
(in case you left something out etc).

I am using the white pages condensed version of the site. Quite odd to see all the blandness to be honest. I however have noticed that the left/right margin is not set properly. If my sentence happens to have a word with only 1 letter and also happen to end in just the right place, its hidden behind the up/down scroll arrow. I can live with this but felt it worthy of a post in this thread.

Thanks for your time.

That's on your end, UD.

If you want a theme that's for slower connections try the "basic" one, there's less images (such as titles and buttons are just text)
