I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it was good. It was also
really weird. I also felt that Johnny Depp didn't live up to all
the hype about his performance.

Agreed. Spoilers herein. I wish everyone wouldv'e died. That was the cheesiest bullshit everyone being alive. If everyone died it wouldv'e been 4X's better.

yeah that would have made it 4x better. it should have ended really abruptly as well like tom cruise and his daughter running down a street with the big ass tripod after them to the back ground of some of that desperate sort of music they usually play in those sort of scenes when that laser thing blasts through a building crushing both of them in thousands of tonnes of brick.

also the aliens in war of the worlds were pathetic they just looked so frail.

indepence day was a great film. the best bit was when will smith kicks the aliens ass after they crash or whatever.

Just to touch base with WOTW again (spoilers)...

...It's like the music and ambience is heart pounding....those things going around stomping asses like nobodys business and you're like AMERICA, f**k YEAH! And then....at the end you find out Dakota Fannings' brother is alive and you're like...Godammit....and then....they go to Boston and all the Grandparents and stepparents and mother is alive and you are like....oh Jesus titty-f**king Christ....and then little Dakota runs up to her mommy and hugs her to the sound of some inspirational music and you're all like someone just shoot me now please for God's sake. It is then, out of nowhere a tripod should f**king step on them ALL in one big step...just crush the s**t out of them. The camera pans out from the flattened alien food and fades to black. Eat s**t Steven Spielberg.

It was like sex without an orgasm.

Speaking of death, destruction, and sex....anyone see the movie 'Crash' from 1996? (Not the 2004 Crash, that was just in theatres, which is also good, but the one directed by David Cronenberg). It's pretty good for those who like unrated psychotic movies.

/methinks for me the problem is identifying what IS a British film. It used to be easy, all the funny accents kinda gave it away but now I am unsure.

But for me I guess I reflect Frenches comment. I cannot envision good horror movies with British anything. I am sure its not the acting, its the silly accents.

I dunno. shrugs

Saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and it's exactly as you might
expect it; effectively th same thing, but done in Tim Burton's own
peculiar way. And Johnny Depp does a great Michael Jackson; very odd,

To me, when I hear british horror, I think of something like this;

Two british guys are sitting in a well decorated room, sitting in large comfy chairs next to a blazing fire.

"I say Reginald, this tea is magnificent1"

"Yes, quite."

"Let's have a packet of crisps as well, shall we?"

"Yes."

"Oh my, I forgot the crisps!"

And that violin music plays in the background the one that's classic
kinda horror with really highpitched na na na na and then a low rumble.

"Don't look now" is a British horror film and one of the best ever - the only downside being Donald Sutherland's funny accent.

"Omen" wasn't a bad film either - if you can ignore Gregory Peck's silly accent.

"The Wicker Man", as Sloth pointed out, is excellent - and features a naked Brigitte Bardot. What more do you want?

that is a better idea! and hell unrated movies are the best, i mean look at Dawn of the Dead. quality movie. oh anyone seen cannibal holocaust? i think you can only get the full version in the us (where it was rated X til 1985 and i think its unrated now) or the internet. it was either banned or cut any where else. it was actually a pretty s**t film but if anyone likes controversy and to be shocked you should see it.
going to see the island some time this weekend. it looks like a really good film.

and i actually would describe war of the worlds as sex just reaching a climax when the grandparents, ex wife, her husband, daughter and son burst in!

Saw Sin City the other night, one of the best movies I have seen in
ages. Great acting, great cast, great story and great cinematic
effects. Extremely violent, but it wouldn't be as good without it. Best
movie I've seen that was filmed entirely in front of a green screen.
Five stars, highly recommended.

Did you watch "Hide and Seek"? Just unnaturally great. About 5 Minutes before the ending I thought "Jehay crap. I don't like endings where you know every little bit what happened". But just the end has its little twist within. So the end is somewhat unclear. And in a very nice way it is. It's something between horror and thriller. Very well done.

Also saw Wedding Crashers. Which was kind of average; basically "Meet

Haven't seen it yet; Germany got left behind....
But I think Christian Bale makes a Batman, close to Michael Keaton. Kilmer and Clooney... just didn't do it.

So I would love to see a remake of "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin". These two films just went away from the darkish batman style movie. Way to Colourful and loud. Didn't read the comics but I've been told that Forever and Robin are more like comics. /Shrugs.
I don't like them anyways. "Batman" and "Batman Returns" are the good ones. Including the score.
Did you recognise any Batman-Theme in "Batman Begins"? I listened to the score once, but I was a little disappointed.

 Seriously though, Battlestar is pretty good, we've only had the first
season here in Australia so far. The space combat annoys the hell out
of me though, its so quiet. Sure there's no sound in space, but if they
wanted to be realistic the sequences would be completely silent. Also
the ships and weaponry are about the most useless hunks of junk ever.
However designed them must be on crack.

I still find Stargate more enjoyable though. Of course if you were to
compare the first season of SG-1 with Battlestar, Stargate would win.
The new Atlantis series isn't as bad as I thought it might be, I'm
actually enjoying it quite a bit. Can't beat SG-1 though, which
finished just before it had completely 'jumped the shark', which is a
good thing.

I watch Rescue Me when I'm not working Tuesday night. I generally can't get into dramas, especially on television, but I find the show often quite compelling. There's some dark humor, the occasional action scene and an incredible commitment to just treat everything as realistically as possible - flaws and all. Plus, I appreciate FX's borderwalking when it comes to controversial content, at least for basic cable TV.

Re: Batman Begins. No they are not going to remake the other Batman movies. There will be more, but probably in the same style of Batman Begins - i.e. through the originals out the window and start from scratch. Let's be realistic here, movies like Batman and Robin are completely unsalvagable.

Movies I've seen recently:

I, Robot - Don't bother watching this. Your standard futuristic popcorn action movie with the most gratiously nauseating camera movement I've ever seen. The phrase "roller coaster ride of a movie" is supposed to be metaphorical.

Fantastic Four - They took what is arguably Marvel's cheesiest comic book and made what is inarguably Marvel's cheesiest movie. I thought they showed adroitness with regard to the use of special effects, but the script is wretched, the plot holier than the Shroud of Turin, and Dr. Doom... just no. Dr. Doom worked on about zero levels. Not only was the actor about as good as a damp tablecloth, but there was no ultimate goal for this character other than to destroy the Fantastic Four. At the end of the movie, all the FF had truly accomplished was saving their own asses. I don't think a single innocent bystander was ever threatened by this disappointment of a nemesis.

The Island - Let me preface this by saying I have no love for Michael Bay. That said, I thought all in all this was a very good movie. Not a classic, and a few overly stupid action sequences (the falling "R" in particular), but most of the chases were very well shot, there was a substantial, engaging plot and the cast pulled out all the stops. Ewan MacGregor gets about five accolades for terrific job with his double role. There were a few wincing product placements: the Michelob Light, X-Box, Aquafina - the bottled water of choice for morally reprehensible totalitarian regimes. A few terrific actors seemed out of the movie a bit too quickly, but I left the theater fully impressed from what I thought would be a complete waste of my money. Oh, and Scarlett Johannson is hot.

I thought the battle scenes in Battlestar were pretty good. The way the fighters move is probably the most realistic I've seen. The design of the human fighters is also fairly close to what we might have up there in 100-150 years (if not, its a pretty good guess).

Okay, I retract my statement; on second thought, Battlestar Galactica makes both Stargates look like scatological child pornography.

SG-1 might have been great before, but without RDA, the crappy plot
starts to show. The new Farscape blood helps I guess, but this current
storyline with crazy fire gods is pretty unwatchable. As for
Atlantis... No comment.

Battlestar Galactica, meanwhile, is like a visual orgasm that should be
sold directly on the street in a syringe. Okay, so it's not always
perfect, but it's usually damn good television. There's just so much
depth everywhere in the characters, the plot, the themes, and not to
mention the religious overtones. Not to mention the great space
battles. It's not like Star Trek where they explain an analogy and push
a few buttons on a computer; the problems last a lot longer than 1
episode. But I guess BSG is more accurately labeled as a drama with a
sci-fi backdrop, which I'm liking a lot more than the alternative.

Oh, and Batman Begins was pretty good. Christian Bale was a lot better
than I thought he would be. I have to say he looks way too old compared
to Katie Holmes though.

What fire gods, and when does MacGyver leave the series? Doesn't the
series end after that crazy time travel/distortion episode, when they
all end up fishing in Jack's pond at the end of the episode?

Maybe the broadcasters here once again decided that no one watches it and decided to axe it, again.

As for BSG being better than Stargate, they have no excuse for it NOT
to be better. They're only remaking an old series that was already
considered to be good, just modernising the plot a bit and using new
effects. Plus they have a much bigger budget than Stargate.

And besides, the two series aim to do different things. SG-1 is a less
serious show, while BSG on the other hand is supposed to be the
big serious thinking man's sci-fi show. It really makes me laugh
sometimes since it shares a number of characteristics with soapies,
particularly the oh so spectacular acting and over dramatising of every
little thing.

I like them both and watch them both. If you think BSG is the best
thing since sliced bread, congrats. But don't s**t on Stargate, as it
is one of the classic sci-fi shows.

Speaking of soapies, who here watches Oz? I enjoy watching it, but man
its like an ultra brutal and violent soapie set within a maximum
security prison sometimes. It's kind of like the modern day equivalent
of the 70's Australian show Prisoner, which was set within a female
prison full of crazy dykes  .

Err, haven't you been watched any of the new season at all? I guess you
don't get them in Australia? Well anyway, the SG-1 series hasn't ended
yet. I guess that explains a bit of the confusion - I've only stopped
watching SG-1 with this new season. Last season was pretty good.

I've been trying to get into Rescue Me but I keep missing it/forgetting
about it. Same thing with Lost. What are everyone's "guilty pleasures"
that you're kind of embarassed of? I really liked Desperate Housewives,
but my friends would always make fun of me for it.

Also, seriously, how long as SG-1 been on? Nine years? That's longer then any Star Trek series.

They're going into a whole ancients weren't the only ascended beings plot. Which is a cool idea, mind you, not sure where they're going with it though. Don't worry, they're only three episodes into the new season. No big deal.

I can't stand Battlestar though ... I'm sorry. It's just sooo boring, or at least those are the episodes I've seen.

As far as I've seen, most shows don't hold up over the years and I think it's rather nice to see something like SG-1, in which, not every episode is good, but there are plenty in each season (except season 1 ... kind of painful to watch, the current arc is far better.)
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I enjoyed watching Mind of Mencia the past two times it was on. This embarasses me as an elitist sketch comedy fan. I'd be the laughing stock of my Arrested Development fan club.

This, season, sucks. Scifi really blew it this time. If I
was you, I wouldn't watch this next season of stargate. The only
thing I like about it is the Oriah. Everything else suck.
They even found a way to make Jack unfunny the whole show. Before
that, I didn't think it was possible. I think Scifi created this
season, despite the fact that most of the people left the show, to try
to squeeze as much money out of the show as possible.

Hmm, guilty TV pleasures eh? Well I'm quite a Desperate Housewives fan,
but while initially that lead to me being mocked, eventually most of my
mates ended up watching it and really enjoying it too  Despite being
for the most part pretty s**t, I also found myself watching "Joey" and
"Two and a Half Men" a lot more often than I should have, and enjoying
both more than I should have at the same time. Shoot me now.

I don't mind two and a half men, mainly because Charlie Sheen is in it.
But if I ever watched Joey I would have to top myself. Friends was God
aweful enough, but Joey is like taking the worst bits of Friends and
making show based solely around them. Pure agony.

I don't mind watching the OC occaisionally, which is pretty bad for me,
since I generally hate those kind of shows. Couldn't really get into
Desperate Housewives, I think because something better is on at the
same time.

I agree about "Joey" - some of the worst parts of Friends, crammed
together into an LA apartment. Blech. They had a decent episode with
Brent Spiner (aka Data!) though, so I guess it's slightly watchable.

Very entertaining.

Watched 3 movies yesterday that I hadn't seen before: Schindler's List, Dr. Strangelove, and Stealth.

Guess which one I won't be buying on DVD.

Cause you prefer VHS?

Of the three, Schindlers list is the best, so I am thinking Strangelove?

Haven't seen Stealth yet.
