Valve released Half-Life: Blue Shift today on the Steam network, for silver/gold or Half-Life premier pack users.

Will you be (re)playing this classic ?

But there ain't a chance I will download it cos I just got the basic hl2 dvd.

Oh and thinking about the hl2 dvd one I saw it in pcworld for ?15 the other week I was rarther surprised at that price I thourght I got it cheap then they had it priced at ?25. All the other shops I have seen hl2 in have all had it for about ?30.

i really didnt enjoy blue-shift very much. it was way too short, i mean five hour completion time. (well the second time round i completed it which contradicts what i have just said, but hell i was bored!)

Length has nothing to do with enjoyment though Rival - some of the best
games I've ever played have been short  I've yet to play Blue Shift
so I have installed it for when it takes my fancy. Will be good to
finally play the last of the HL1 games.

Yeah, I'll replay it. Good 6 hours of entertainment. I really enjoyed
it because I beat it so quickly. And you don't need to have
bought silver/gold whatever before you can play. Just register
the key of your Half-Life 1 and you'll be able to get it

ReNo, it wouldn't be that bad if it really took 6 hours. It doesn't. It takes maybe 3. The most difficult adversary you encounter is marines. There is no end boss either.

I don't mind games that only take 5 to 6 hours (MGS, ICO)

Not to mention, they still haven't released the high-definition pack over steam, which Means I'd have to install BS somewhere to get the pack.

But, I already installed it and started running through it again. I think if you're ready for the disappointment of a short game and not much of a challenge, then you'll probably like it more.

Honestly, I'd rather have played a black-ops sp mod.

I enyojed Bleushift especially. It was short, yes, but the puzzling was
nice. A bit too much marine combat and all, but the whole 'getting out
of here' was nicely done. Bleushifts Xen part was also much better than
Half-Life's Xen.

All in all just a nice piece of work that'll keep you playing for a few
hours. Combat isn't too hard, puzzles are slightly harder than
Half-Life's ones.

I don't have the silver package or such, just bought a HL Generations
pack a few years ago so I'll be able to replay it anyway. If I'm ever
going to do that again. SP packs tend to get much less fun after the
first two times and all...

That should be a point to research: upping replayability values for SP
maps... like those old games that allowed you to play on a different
mode, some extra gear, or similar stuff, access to previously hidden
area's, things like that. Secrets add to that value too, I think.

Hmm, I feel like hyjacking a thread right now...

quick. I had forgotten how stale the gameplay seems. It's
just running around flipping levers and jumping obstacles while
vortigaunts spawn from nowhere.

I'd consider "Black and White", "May Payne", or even "Neverwinter Nights" to have better gameplay, which all came out in 2001 as well.

The original Half-Life came out way before that, and it has excellent gameplay, even for today's standard.

Only by three years. I think opposing force had better game play though. At least I enjoyed it way more (I'm excited for you, since you'll get to play it once you finish HL)

But, yes, I was restricting myself to computer games that came out in 2001. Not to mention the next year Allied Assault came out, which is a wonderful game.

much with Nickelplate here. I never got accustomed to steam. It never was useful to me. And I didn't really enjoy Blue Shift. I couldn't develop an atmosphere to dive into.
Maybe I need to replay it some time in order to enjoy it.

I mean... I understand they are aliens but running into a room and
having vortigaunts spawn both in front of you and behind, over and over
and over again get's old pretty fast. Compared to HL1 and Op4 it
just didn't seem as fun.

Did anyone else notice how many clip brushes they used to keep you from
getting to places you couldnt? I miss the freedom of movement
(and ability to kill yourself by jumping off train platforms).

Also, the additional dialogue for Blue Shift seemed slowly spoken... as if the actors were comatose during recording.

One word: Snarks.

I got stuck in a chapter called "Chumtoads Lair" and couldn't figure
out how to get past it.....so I looked up a walkthrough guide.....and
the chapter wasn't in it.....after searching some more, I found out I
had stumbled upon a secret chapter....it is apparently the only place
in Blue Shift (correct me if I am wrong) that you can get Snarks. I
won't say in this forum how to GET to the lair, but I will provide a
screenshot: (just PM me if you want to know where it is  )

Behold the elusive secret that is chumtoads lair......

Also, playing Blue Shift reminds me how much I miss HL1's ladders, and
how the functionality of HL2's blow so much....so restrictive....

Ah screw it.....Chumtoads Lair is in Xen....when you are crawling
through the crawl tunnels, you will pass through a room with a health
spa and a very deep pond. Sit in the 'spa' until you have 100% health
(you will need every % to get to the lair.) Then, jump into the pond
and go straight down, not stopping for the ammo you see on the side or
you'll drown. When you get to the bottom, search the walls for a small
crack (it may take you a few trys till you find it.) then hack away
with your crowbar a bunch of times....it will eventually give way so
you can swim through to the lair.

Have fun!

Is this high def pack just for BS? Is there one for HL1 & Op4?

HD pack counts for HL, OpFor and BS. Funny thing is, I already have it
installed on my Steam HL. I believe it's because I had the HD pack
installed when my HL files were translated to a Steam version.

So, any time I see those old weapons come along, I just look disgusted at them thinking: did I ever like those models?

The HD pack is weird. They changed the MP5 to an M4A1. Sure, it makes more sense to have a grenade launcher on one, but you now have a 9mm M4 with a 50 round clip. Also, the old shotgun looked better.

Not that HL was ever all that realistic, but it was an unneccesary addon. Like the incessant CSS player model updates.

Wow, didn't even notice i got it. I'll maybe play it.............. maybe...

It sucked though, you never get to meet freeman, even though you're
barney, and in HL2 source he's all friendly to Gordon and claims to
have met him like he where some old friend? :S

Different Barney. You also have to remember that in HL1 all the "barneys" you ran into shortly thereafter died. And you "see" Gordon plenty of times in BS. Of course they're not going to have him talk, because of Valve's stance on how "that would detract from placing you in Gordon's shoes", even though you're not playing as him in this game, it still stands, I suppose.

Also, remember that HL1 happens one day you come into work. The security guards (pre-accident) are quite friendly with you and know who you are.

Personally, I would have questioned the scientist characters and alien slaves more then anything else. But, it's just stuff they never talked about in hl1, so it's easily concievable.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

The first Half Life is still my favorite game of all time. BS was alright but too short for me to enjoy a whole bunch.

There's nothing else like playing a great game like Half Life for the
first time. That first week that I bought Half Life were the best times
I've ever had playing a video game.

Great story

Great characters

Great enemies

Great Bosses

Great ending

I just finished Blue Shift yesterday. I still like it better than
Opposing Force. The style and layouts just feel more refined, and I
love some particular sequences and puzzles.

But what I enjoyed most of all though was how Dr. Rosenberg would
interact with the player/world so much: talk to you about the labs,
boost you out of the train car, activate lab machinery around you, etc.
It's kind of a precursor to the kind of interaction you see in HL2,
somewhat.

I don't give a rats ass, because I have it still in the gen pack. Maybe some day I will actually finish HL, BS and O4.

It's kind of a precursor to the kind of interaction you see in HL2,
somewhat.
Heh, exactly what I liked so much about Bleushift. It all feels so more fleshed out, it just 'works' I think.

Some of the puzzles are absolutely fiendish though - particularly that
"move the barrel to connect the wire". That had me stumped for at least
half an hour.

Half an hour? I found out in 5 minutes. Well, it's perhaps not as logic as most other puzzles, I mean, not as intuitive.

Anyway, it seems there's a mod team working on a Source version of
Bleushift already... that's ok, but hey, why not a new story, or a
continuation of the BS story or such?
